1. Scope
This specification is for the design, materials, fabrication and erection of pre-engineered metal
buildings, including exterior doors, windows, louvers and ventilators.

2. References
Reference is made in this specification to the following documents. The latest issues, amendments, and
supplements to these documents shall apply unless otherwise indicated.

Any conflict(s) between this standard/specification, SES and industry standards, engineering drawings,
and contract documents shall be resolved at the discretion of SABIC.

3. Definitions
For the purpose of understanding this standard, the following definitions apply:
Manufacturer. The company specialized in the design, fabrication, supply and installation of pre-
engineered metal building system.
Erector. The party authorized by the manufacturer for the erection and installation of pre-engineered
metal building system.
Project Documents. The documents including specifications, studies, design drawings, sketches,
practices and data sheets which are specific to a project.

4. Design
4.1 General

4.1.1 Buildings shall be in accordance with project specification, building parameters (type,
width, eave height, bay spacing and roof slope) and design drawings. Buildings shall be complete
with all purlins, girts, bracing and other structural elements and connections. Architectural
attachments, for example roofing, siding, walls and partitions, where such attachments are
incorporated in the design to act as structural elements, are also included.

4.1.2 Building layout and structural design shall comply with IBC and HCIS SAF-03 with respect
to functionality and safety and durability. Fire protection of buildings shall conform to SES F03-
G01 and F01-G01 and life safety from fire in buildings and structures shall conform to NFPA.

4.1.3 Manufacturer shall design the building in accordance with SES B01-E01, AISC Steel
Construction Manual, AISI Design Manual, and MBMA Manual.

4.1.4 Materials and structures shall not fail, rupture or corrode for a period of 10 years under
normal weather and atmospheric conditions.

4.1.5 Metal building manufacturer shall furnish the loads at column bases, anchor bolt details
and locations, and required recesses to properly design the foundations.

4.1.6 Unless otherwise specified, the design criteria shall be in accordance with the MBMA
Metal Building Systems Manual, Part I – Design Practices.

4.2 Design Loads

4.2.1 Buildings shall be designed, engineered, fabricated and erected to withstand loads from
gravity, winds, earthquake, structural movement, including thermally induced movement, and to
resist in-service use conditions that the building will experience, including exposure to the weather,
without failure.

4.2.2 Building as a whole, or any portion or connection thereof, shall be designed to resist the
basic design loading acting either singly or in conjunction with the other loads.

4.2.3 Basic design loads and load combinations shall be as per SES B01-E01. However,
engineering judgment shall be used in establishing any other most sever load combination.

4.3 Serviceability Factors

4.3.1 The serviceability factors of deflection and drift to be used in the design of buildings shall
be in accordance with SES B01-E01 and the additional requirements of this section.

4.3.2 The depth of steel floor beams supporting large open areas shall not be less than 1/20 of
the span length, to minimize vibration due to pedestrian traffic.

4.3.3 The maximum deflections of primary and secondary structural members shall be in
accordance with Table I.

4.3.4 Buildings’ lateral drifts for design wind speeds shall be limited to the values shown in
Table II.

4.3.5 Lateral drift of the building frame shall not in any way hamper the operation of equipment,
doors, mechanical devices, storage racks, cranes or other items which are not attached to the
building frame.

4.3.6 The horizontal deflection of crane runway beam shall be limited to L / 400 and vertical
deflection of crane runway beam and monorail shall be as per SES B01-E01.

5. Materials
5.1 General

5.1.1 Materials shall be of new stock, and free from defects and imperfections.

5.1.2 The building components, structural framing, wall and roof covering, and accessory
components, shall be obtained from one, single-source manufacturer.

5.1.3 Substitutions shall not be permitted without prior written approval from SABIC.

5.2 Primary Structural Members

5.2.1 Primary structural framing includes transverse and lean to frames, rafter, rake, canopy,
runway, and platform beams, sidewall, end wall, intermediate, corner, and platform columns, eave
struts and wind bracing.

5.2.2 Primary structural frames shall be fabricated from hot-rolled structural steel shapes that
are built-up factory-welded, “I-beam”- shaped or open web-type frames consisting of tapered or
parallel flange beams and tapered columns.

5.2.3 Primary built-up members shall be fabricated from plates conforming to ASTM A 572,
Grade 50. When required, structural shapes and plate shall be in accordance with ASTM A 36.
The minimum thickness of any part of built-up sections shall be 5 mm.

5.2.4 Frames shall be furnished with attachment plates, bearing plates, and splice members,
factory-drilled or punched for field-bolted assembly.

5.2.5 End wall columns and beam shall be rolled shapes, built-up I-beam, or cold-formed “C”
sections fabricated from minimum 2 mm thick steel.

5.3 Secondary Structural Members

5.3.1 Secondary structural framing includes purlins, girts, flange braces, gable angles, headers,
jambs, and brackets and clips for accessories.

5.3.2 Purlins and side girts shall be cold formed “C” or “Z” shape sections conforming to
following:
a. ASTM A 1011M, Grade 55
b. ASTM A 1008M, Class 1 or 2, Grade 55
c. ASTM A 653 SS Class 1, Grade 50

5.3.3 The minimum thickness of sections used for girts, purlins, purlin spacer, and door, window
framing shall be 1.75 mm.

5.3.4 Material for other secondary structural members shall have minimum yield strength of
250 MPa. The bracing rods and cables shall conform to ASTM A 615 (plain bar) and A 475
respectively.

5.3.5 Material for cold formed tubing in rounds and shapes shall conform to ASTM A 500
Grade A.

5.4 Connections

5.4.1 High-strength bolts conforming to ASTM A 325 shall be used in the connection of all
primary structural members. The minimum size of high-strength bolts shall be 20 mm in diameter.

5.4.2 Connections of primary structural members shall have at least two bolts.

5.4.3 Bolt assemblies for the connection of primary structural members shall be provided as
follows:
a. Bolt - ASTM A 325 Type 1
b. Washer - ASTM F 436
c. Direct Tension Indicator Washers (DTI) - ASTM F 959
d. Heavy Hex Nut - ASTM A 563, Grade DH

5.4.4 Bolts conforming to ASTM A 307 shall be used in the connection of secondary structural
members such as purlins, girts, door frames and eave struts. The minimum bolt size shall be 12
mm in diameter.

5.4.5 Bolt assemblies for the connection of secondary structural members shall be provided as
follows:
a. Bolt - ASTM A 307, Grade A
b. Washer - ASTM F 436
c. Heavy Hex Nut - ASTM A 563, Grade A

5.4.6 All nuts for high-strength bolts shall be wax-dipped.

5.4.7 Anchor bolts shall be in accordance with SES B55-E01. Anchor bolts and embedded items
shall be sized and furnished by the metal building manufacturer.

5.5 Roofing and Wall Panels

5.5.1 Manufacturer shall select from single sheet or sandwich type roof and wall panels based
on SABIC requirements for maximum heat transmission coefficient and required internal design
temperature. The choice of panels is subject to prior written approval of SABIC.

5.5.2 Roof and wall panels shall be in accordance with SES A12-S01.

5.6 Gutters and Downspouts

5.6.1 Gutters shall be a minimum of 0.56 mm thick, box-shaped, galvanized or zinc-aluminum


alloy-coated steel conforming to ASTM A 792. The gutter shall be supported with 0.75 mm
galvanized steel straps to the structural member at a maximum spacing of 1200 mm.

5.6.2 Gutter sections shall be provided in the longest continuous sections possible. At joints,
sections shall be lapped a minimum of 10 cm and sealed with sealant, then fastened with
fasteners.

5.6.3 Gutter end closures shall be sealed with sealant and fastened with pop rivets.

5.6.4 Downspouts shall be of a minimum 0.56 mm thick, round or rectangular-shaped


galvanized or zinc-aluminum alloy-coated steel. Downspouts shall have a 45 elbow at the bottom,
and shall be supported by attachment to the wall at every 3 m maximum.

5.7 Louvers

5.7.1 Sand trap louvers shall be provided to perform initial separation of airborne sand and dust
mixtures. All louvers shall be furnished with self-emptying sand drain holes and wire mesh bird
screens.

5.7.2 Louvers shall have blades of the overlapping type, providing maximum weather tightness
while allowing free airflow.

5.7.3 Wall louver frames and blades shall be fabricated from galvanized steel of 1.5 mm and 1
mm thickness respectively. Louver frames and blade fabricated from extruded aluminum sheet of
1.5 mm thickness are also acceptable.

5.8 Roof Ventilators

5.8.1 Roof ventilators shall be in accordance with SES-H02-S01 and H02-C01.

5.9 Personnel Doors

5.9.1 Exit doors shall be specifically designed for installation with the exterior wall panels. Exit
doors shall be a minimum of 915 mm wide x 2035 mm high.

5.9.2 Interior and exterior doors shall be in accordance with project documents and SES A05-
S01 and SES A05-S02.

5.10 Service Doors

5.10.1 Service doors shall be roll-up doors or sliding doors as specified in project documents.

5.10.2 Electric motor shall be provided for roll-up doors in accordance with SES E06-S01.

5.10.3 The leaves of sliding doors shall be suspended from a ‘C’ section or other appropriate
structural member as a track header, with the galvanized track field-bolted. Trolleys shall be
galvanized steel with dual, nylon wheels. The track and trolleys shall be protected by a counter-
flashed hood.

5.10.4 Door leaves shall be constructed of steel framing and panels as specified for the walls.
The door leaves shall be adequately flashed and counter-flashed for weather-tightness. Large
doors may be field assembled with bolted connections.

5.10.5 The doors shall have inside and outside locking devices.

5.11 Windows

5.11.1 Windows shall be in accordance with project documents and SES A05-S01 and SES A05-
S02.

6. Fabrication
6.1 Structural framing of metal building system shall be fabricated in accordance with the design
drawings and SES B02-S01.

6.2 Welding shall conform to the applicable requirements of AWS D1.1 and D1.3 for structural and
sheet steel respectively. Welding procedures shall be submitted to SABIC for review and approval.

6.3 The fabricated structural steel shapes shall be either hot-rolled or built-up members with full
penetration or double-sided fillet welded. Single-sided fillet welded structural shapes shall not be
permitted.

6.4 Building components shall be fabricated in a way that once assembled they may be disassembled,
re-packaged, and reassembled.

6.5 All parts and bundles of identical parts of the assembly shall be clearly marked to correspond with
erection drawings and instruction manuals.

6.6 Structural framing components shall be shop-fabricated to designed sections and sizes with base
plates, bearing plates and other plates required for erection. Holes for anchoring, or structural
connections shall be shop-drilled or punched.

6.7 Shop connections shall be power riveted, bolted, or welded.

6.8 Field connections shall be bolted.

6.9 Unless otherwise specified in project document, primary and secondary structural members shall
be factory painted as per clause 2.10.9 of SES T01-S01.

6.10 All structural bolts shall be galvanized in accordance with the following:
a. ASTM A 153 for ASTM A 325 Type 1 Bolts
b. ASTM B 695 for ASTM A 307 Bolts
c. ASTM B 695 for nuts and washers

7. Erection
7.1 Prefabricated components, and other manufactured items shall be packaged to provide protection
against damage during transportation.

7.2 Care shall be exercised in loading, unloading and storing to prevent bending, warping, twisting,
and surface damage.

7.3 Bolts, nuts and washers shall be shipped prior to or with the first lot of structural steel. Anchor
bolts shall be shipped in time to accommodate the construction schedule for the building
foundations.

7.4 The building shall be erected in accordance with erection drawings, erection manual and
SES B02-S02.

7.5 Erector shall have minimum two years of experience in the erection and installation of the types
of pre-engineered metal buildings required for the project. Erector shall be certified in writing by
the manufacturer as qualified for erection of the metal buildings.

7.6 Erection shall be done under supervision of manufacturer’s field supervisor. The supervisor shall
have minimum of 5 years’ experience in the construction of pre-engineered metal building.

7.7 Framing members shall be accurately set, leveled, plumbed, and aligned, with all joints and
anchorage securely bolted. The erection tolerances shall be as in MBMA Metal Building System
Manual.

7.8 In consultation with manufacturer’s field supervisor, Erector shall design and install additional
temporary bracing or guying required ensuring stability of the structure, safe and stable conditions
during entire work period.

7.9 Framed openings shall be provided for pipes and conduits routing through the bearing walls. After
installation of pipes or conduits, each opening shall be flashed to obtain a weatherproof
installation.

7.10 Field correcting of fabrication by gas cutting shall not be permitted without prior SABIC
authorization.

7.11 “C”-shaped girts shall be installed toe down.

7.12 Grouting used in erection of building shall conform to SES B51-S03.

7.13 Anchor bolts shall be brought to a snug-tight condition after the first tier is plumbed and the
columns are grouted. Snug tight is defined as tightness attained by a few impacts of an impact or
striking wrench, or the full effort of a man using an ordinary spud wrench.

7.14 High strength bolts in shear/ bearing connection shall be tightened to the snug-tight condition in
accordance with AISC Specification for Structural Joints Using High Strength Bolts.

7.15 High Strength Bolts in slip-critical connections, connections subject to direct tensions or fully pre-
tensioned bearing connections shall be tightened by the turn-of-nut method in accordance with
AISC Specification for Structural Joints Using High Strength Bolts.

8. Quality Assurance
8.1 Materials, fabrication, welding, surface preparation and painting will be inspected by SABIC at
their discretion. SABIC's inspection and acceptance of the material shall not relieve manufacturer
of his responsibility.

8.2 Nondestructive examination of welds shall be performed by Manufacturer. Web and flange splices
shall be spot radiographed in accordance with AWS D1.1.

8.3 Additional welding inspection may be requested by SABIC under the guidelines established in
AWS D1.1.

8.4 High strength bolt tightening shall be inspected in accordance with AISC Specification for
Structural Joints Using High Strength Bolts.

9. Submittals
Following documents shall be submitted to SABIC:

9.1 Product data consisting of manufacturer's product information for building components and
accessories.

9.2 Structural design calculations. This shall include design loads and load combinations considered
in the design, and a clear statement of design assumptions, calculated deflection, drift and
stresses. Sketches that show joint and member numbers, support conditions, and loadings shall
be included.

9.3 Anchor bolt layout drawings. The drawings shall clearly show the size, location and projection of
the anchor bolts for the building system components, and the location and size of any foundation

block-outs that are required. Un-factored column reactions with magnitude and direction for
individual load case (dead, live, wind, seismic, crane etc.), and base plate dimensions shall also
be included.

9.4 General arrangement and shop drawings for the building structural framing system, roofing and
siding panels, and accessories.

9.5 Complete erection drawings. The drawings shall include details for installation and assembly of
the building system.

9.6 Layout drawings for wall and roof panels. The drawings shall include layout of panels, details of
edge conditions, joints, corners, custom profiles, supports, anchorage, trim, flashing, closures and
special details as applicable.

9.7 Drawings for personnel doors consisting of schedule of doors and frames with openings and
fabrication details.

9.8 Drawings for sliding and roll-up service doors. The drawing shall include elevations of door units
and details, door curtain, door sections, tracks, brackets, hardware, guides, counterbalance, and
method of operation as appropriate for each type of door.

9.9 Wiring diagrams for motor-operated roll-up and sliding service doors. The diagram shall include
details of power, signal, and control systems.

9.10 Drawings for windows consisting of schedule of window units and details such as anchor, glazing
and hardware.

9.11 Drawings for sheet metal accessories. The drawing shall include layout and detail of ventilators,
louvers, gutters, downspouts, and other sheet metal accessories with methods of joining, and
anchorage.
