MELC: Describe the effects of interactions among organisms in their environment

(S4LT-IIi-j18)
Objectives:
1. Identify the effects of the interactions among organisms in their environment
2. Describe the effects of the interactions among organisms in their environment
3. Classify the effects of the interactions among organisms in their environment

of an action or
other cause Look at the picture below.

What does the bee do with the flower

of a guava tree?

How does a bee contribute to the

well-being of a tree?

What can you say about their

interaction?

What possible effects may this

interaction give?

Yes, that is right! The bee sips nectar from the flowers. It transfers
the pollen grains from one flower to the stigma of another flower. Their
interaction is mutualism because both the bee and the flower benefit
from each other.

1
Nectar of flowers obtained by the bee feeds other baby bees in the
colony. Pollen grains of flowers that were transferred to other flowers
help in fertilization and in producing fruits of the guava tree. Their
interaction helps human because of the honey being produced by the
bees and the fruit which is produced by the guava tree. Honey produced
by bees and fruits produced by the guava trees is both useful and
beneficial to human.

Now, let us have another example.

What is the type of interaction that

exists if the mosquito bites a human?

Does a human benefit from the

interaction?

Aside from sucking of blood, what other

effects can a mosquito bring us?

The type of interaction that exists between the mosquito and

human is parasitism. The human does not benefit from the interaction.
The human will be badly affected by the mosquito bites that may cause
dengue, malaria, and others which are harmful to human.

Mutualism and commensalism interactions have beneficial effects

among organisms in their environment such as the production of fruits,
beautiful plants, and others. On the other hand, parasitism, predation,
and competition have harmful effects like the decrease of the community
of plants and animals.

Our role is to conserve the ecosystem by planting more trees and

protecting the places where animals live. We need to take care of our
environment for us to survive and to protect the natural resources given
by God.

Let’s Practice

ACTIVITY 1 Directions: Identify the effects of interactions among

organisms whether beneficial or harmful. Write B in the
box if the effect of interaction is beneficial and H if it is
harmful.

ACTIVITY 2 Directions: Classify the effects of interactions among
organisms whether beneficial or harmful. Connect the
balloon to the stem of the pitcher plant by drawing a
line.

4
Let’s Do More

ACTIVITY 1 Directions: Describe the effects of the interactions

among organisms in their environment. Do the maze
to connect the interactions among organisms then
write the letter of the correct answer in the blank on
the right side.

1. _____

2. _____

3. _____

A. This is beneficial interaction for both the human and

plants. Humans utilize the oxygen that plants give and
exhale carbon dioxide. Plants use the carbon dioxide to
create oxygen that the humans need.
B. Both trees and plants are affected in the competition for
water and minerals from the soil which may cause them
not to grow well.
C. The flea gets a shelter and food for survival but this harmed
the dog by having itches.

5
ACTIVITY 2 Directions: Describe the effects of the interactions
among organisms in their environment by filling in the
blanks with the correct word from the box to complete
the sentence.

Dogs competing for food

This is beneficial interaction for both

2. fungus and algae. The fungus gets
___________ from the algae and the
algae gets a ___________ to live in.
The lichen consists of a fungus
and algae growing together

3. Pitcher plants have foods for

area.
Pitcher plant catching insects
