The Question Concerning Technology

By Martin Heidegger
Title of the Article

1. Difficult Concepts (What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)

i. The part when Heidegger discussed that “Technology is not equivalent to the essence of
technology. When we are seeking the essence of “tree,” we have to become aware that
That which pervades every tree, as tree, is not itself a tree that can be encountered among
all the other trees.”
ii. This part when Heidegger talks about that unconcealment happens whenever man
engages with the world through his senses, thoughts, and actions, responding to the call
of unconcealment even when he works against it.
iii. When Heidegger discussed enframing, it demands that nature be ordered as standing-
reserve, which challenges modern physics to represent nature in a calculable and
orderable manner.

2. Insights (What new insights or learning did you gain in discussion/ activity?)

i. Before reading the article, I thought that technology is a tool that can help us in certain
situations, however, reading the article, I now realize that technology is always there to help
us in every situation in our lives.
ii. Before reading the article, I thought that technology is just there to help us but it’s not that
important for us to know the essence of it. However, reading the article, I now realize that
understanding the deeper essence of technology makes us more aware and more empowered
of our interaction with it.
iii. Before reading the article, I thought that technology is just a neutral tool for us, however,
reading the article, I now realize that technology also involves the human activities that is
used in making a certain task using technology.

3. Questions (What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas you want more
explanations about?

i. I understand the thought that Heidegger wants us to understand, but why does Heidegger
is still afraid of technology that he just simply hides from the people and not just used
technology that he said that we should be more empowered of?
ii. Why did Heidegger introduce his concept of “enframing” when in fact he knows the
danger that it can cause to humans?
iii. Do people still really need to dive into further understanding of technology and
enframing, when based on the article made by Heidegger, is dangerous?
