The Potential Environmental Impact of Engineered Nanomaterials

By Vicki L. Colvin
Title of the Article

1. Difficult Concepts (What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)

i. The concept that I find difficult to understand was Nanotechnology and Toxicology, its
functions, facts, etc.

2. Insights (What new insights did you gain from the discussion/ activity?)

i. Before reading the article, I thought that sunscreens are lotions that protects us from the
striking heat of the sun and low-key innocent on how it really functions. However, reading
the article, I now realize that it contains organic compounds such as nanoscale titania and
zinc oxide particles which both are active photocatalysts. These absorbs light and generate
them as another energy.

ii. Before understanding the lesson, I thought that nanomaterials give danger to the ones
exposed to it. However, understanding the lesson, I now think that these really has benefits
and purpose just like in fuel and it saves energy.

iii. Before reading the article, I thought that engineered nanoparticles is another term for
nanomaterials. However, reading the article, I now realize that they are different and the
engineered nanoparticles are could also be seen or present in personal cosmetics such as
sunscreens and cosmetics.

3. Questions (What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas you want more
explanations about?)
i. What is in vivo and in vitro toxicological studies and their differences?
ii. How did they discover the concept of nanomaterials?
iii. What is the possible massive adverse effects can nanotechnology result by too much use?
