1. INTRODUCTION
MSTB production field is located in Desa Tanjung, Kecamatan Tebing Tinggi Barat, Kabupaten
Kepulauan Meranti. Currently fluid transfer is carried out via barging from MSTB to FSO Gandini/Kurau
Plant. Wells currently operating are MSTB-01, MSTB-02, MSTB-03, MSTB-05, MSTB-06, MSTB-08,
MSTB-09 with production rate of around 1,900 BFPD and BSW ranges between 1.00-56.00% (based
on Production Daily Report 18 November 2019).
MSTB-01 is part of a scattered discovery in the eastern region of the Malacca Strait, which is located
in the inland area onshore in the Ringgit area and the surface conditions are swampy. The eastern
region of Malacca Strait is quite far from existing production facilities.
Along with the MSTB field development program, efforts will be made to increase production capacity
by carrying out a series of drilling programs with the target of increasing production to 4,500 BFPD
from MSTB Field, and 4,000 BFPD from Ringgit Field.
2. OBJECTIVE
The objective of this document is to presents optimum crude oil storage tank dimension including
venting device dimension on the crude oil tank for the MSTB and MSAI Facility. The physical properties
of the fluid is taken from the process simulation results document.

5. FACILITY DESCRIPTION
Fluid from MSTB wells is transferred through flowlines with a size of 4” with varying lengths to MSTB
Production Facility. Fluid from the Production Manifold flows to the Crude Oil Storage Tank (T-701D/E),
while the fluid from the Test Manifold is routed to the Test Separator to separate Gas, Oil and Water.
The Test Separator outlet gas flows to the KO Drum and Venting System. Oil and Water from the Test
Separator are routed to the Storage Tank.
From Crude Oil Storage Tank (T-701D/E), the fluid is pumped to MSAI facility via 32 km long 4” & 6”
pipeline. In addition to the pumping process, the fluid is also heated by Crude Oil Heater so that the
fluid temperature remains above the pour point when it arrives at MSAI.
At MSAI Facility (Selatan Field), the fluid is stored in a Storage Tank (T-801) before transferred to
Kurau Plant. From Crude Oil Storage Tank, the fluid is heated in order to keep the fluid temperature
remains above the pour point when it arrives at Kurau Facility. Fluid is then pumped from MSAI Facility
to Kurau Facility through the existing 12” pipeline along 27 km.
Crude Oil Storage Tank will be equipped with venting system. The venting requirement should be sized
to anticipate required venting condition. The venting scenario which considered to be calculate are normal
venting, liquid movement, and thermal effect.
Crude Oil Storage Tank will also be equipped with immersed heater to maintain the fluid temperature at
100 oF
The tank sizing calculation is performed with In-house vessel calculation spreadsheet. The methodology
based on API STD 2000 is applied to select the proper pressure and vacuum relief size based on the tank
service condition and flow requirement.
In-house venting requirement spreadsheet for atmospheric tank based on API 2000 is also used to
performed tank venting calculation.
Tank working capacity is liquid volume between minimum operating liquid level (LLL) and maximum
operating liquid level (HLL). The required working capacity for new Crude Oil Storage Tank at MSTB and
MSAI has been determined as 5,000 BBL refer to the latest production profile flowrate with some margin.
As limiting criteria, the height – diameter ratio of the Tank should be equal to or less than 1 (H/D < 1).
Tank dimension is determined based on Table A.1b of Annex A in API STD 650, 12th edition.
Minimum height between center line of outlet nozzle and bottom of tank is determined based on Table
5-6, API STD 650, 12th edition. Outlet nozzle type is assumed as regular type.
Crude Oil Storage Tank is assumed to be designed to use 72-inch height courses.
Basis for calculating outbreathing and inbreathing capacity:
- Crude Oil Storage Tank is not insulated
- MSTB Facility is located in Indonesia. Hence, belongs to latitude below 42°.
- Operating temperature of Crude Oil Storage Tank is refer to Process Simulation Report
- Vapor pressure of crude oil is 0.2 psi (at 100 °F) based on laboratory analysis.
7.1 Tank Dimension
Crude Oil Storage Tank and Diesel Oil Storage Tank are cylindrical tanks where the volume is
calculated based on this equation:
Where:
V : Tank volume
D : Tank diameter
H : Tank height
7.2 Inbreathing and Outbreathing Capacity
Inbreathing and outbreathing calculation refers to API STD 2000, 7th edition.
Where:
Vip : Inbreathing venting Requirement (SCFH)
Vpe : maximum rate of liquid discharging (GPM)
Vop : outbreathing volumetric flowrate (ACFH)
Vpf : maximum volumetric filling rate (GPM)
Inbreahting capacity calculation due to thermal effect is calculated using these equations:
Outbreahting capacity calculation due to thermal effect is calculated using these equations:
Where
VOT : Thermal outbreathing apacity (SCFH)
VIT : Thermal inbreathing capacity (SCFH)
C : Factor that depends on vapor pressure, average storage temperature and latitude (see
Table 6.2)
Y : Factor for latitude
Vtk : Tank volume (ft3)
Ri : Reduction factor for insulation (Ri = 1 if no insulation)
Table 7.2 – Y-Factor for Various Latitudes
Latitude Y-Factor
8. RESULT
The working capacity for the Crude Oil Storage Tank of MSTB and MSAI is 5000 BBL based on production
profile with safety margin. Working capacity is liquid volume between Low Liquid Level (LLL) and High
Liquid Level (HLL).
The tank dimension is determined based on Table A.1b of Annex A in API STD 650, 12th edition. Crude
Oil Storage Tank is assumed to be designed to use 72-inch height courses.
Table 8.1 – Nominal Capacities (barrels) for Tanks API STD 650
Refer to Table A.1b API STD 650, by considered dead volume and vapor space area, the selected
nominal volume for the MSTB and MSAI Crude oil tank is 6300 BBL with 50 ft (ID) x 18 ft (Height).
The Crude Oil Storage Tank sizing result is summarized on the following table. Detailed calculation can
be found on Attachment-A.
