PROS AND CONS OF BEING THE ONLY CHILD

Nowadays, making a family is a very hard task and responsibility and it is getting
harder after having a child and trying to bring him/her up. Also, the people who have
become a family think how many children they will have. Some parents prefer large
families with three or more children, while others prefer having a single child because
of several advantages it provides. While having an only child has pros, it also has cons
both of which should be considered before deciding any option.

On the one hand (adv), there are some advantages to being the only child. Firstly,
a family’s whole financial resources belong to the only child. For example, a child’s
educational expenses are very high these days and so the only child can receive a
good education at the private school’s or private universities. Moreover, *the only
child has high focus by his/her parents. For instance, the family gives all its attention
to the only child in areas like education, personality, self-confidence or etc.

On the other hand (disadv), there are some drawbacks to being the only
child, too. The child who has no siblings can be affected easier by peer-pressure. For
example, at the school, if the only child had siblings, he/she could learn how deal with
the peers. Besides, the child can be exposed to high levels pressure by parents in many
ways including preferring a job. For instance, when one of the parents was a child,
maybe he/she wanted to be a doctor or an engineer, but he/she couldn’t. the parent
may want to self-actualize herself over the child. This situation can affect the child’s
future negatively by forcing her to select a job which he does not really want.

To conclude, there are some advantages and disadvantages to being only a child. In
my opinion, disadvantages are more dominant over the advantages. If I were the one
to decide, I would personally choose to have more brothers and sisters. Considering
these, families might be encouraged by the governments to have more than one child
by providing financial support for each child.
