Mindanao Earthquake 2023: A Reminder of the Ongoing Seismic

Risks in the Philippines

On December 2, 2023, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4–7.6 struck the
province of Surigao del Sur and surrounding regions in Mindanao, the Philippines. The
earthquake occurred at 10:37 PM Philippine Standard Time (PST), with an epicenter
located 29 kilometers northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, and an estimated depth of
26 kilometers. The earthquake was caused by subduction along the Philippine Trench
and was preceded by numerous significant earthquakes in the same region throughout
history.

This earthquake triggered a tsunami, although the resulting waves were not
devastating. The first tsunami wave arrived at 02:52 AM (PST) on December 3, 2023,
reaching 0.4 meters (1.3 feet) in Hinatuan-Bislig Bay Station. The tsunami warning was
eventually cancelled. Following the main shock, over 370 aftershocks were recorded,
including a few larger ones, such as a magnitude 6.9 earthquake.

Communities in Surigao del Sur and adjacent provinces experienced varying levels of
damage, with some buildings suffering structural damage and others experiencing
power failure. Two fatalities were reported, including a pregnant woman. Despite the
loss of life, the majority of the damage was limited to property and infrastructure, rather
than widespread destruction.

In response to the earthquake, the Philippine government and various organizations

provided assistance to affected individuals and communities. The Department of Social
Welfare and Development (DSWD) conducted assessments and distributed relief goods
to displaced persons. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs)
continued to monitor aftershocks and advised residents to remain vigilant.

The earthquake served as a reminder of the ongoing seismic risks faced by the
Philippines, particularly in regions like Mindanao, which lie within the Ring of Fire.
"Celebrating National Reading Month: A Journey Through Words, Ideas, and
Worlds"

Reading is not just a skill; it's a gateway to countless worlds, ideas, and perspectives.
It's the key that unlocks the doors to knowledge, imagination, and empathy. Whether
we're delving into the pages of a novel, poring over the lines of a poem, or exploring the
depths of non-fiction, reading enriches our lives in profound ways.
As March unfolds, so does the celebration of National Reading Month, a time dedicated
to honoring the beauty and power of reading. It's a reminder of the joy and magic that
comes with immersing oneself in a good book, and an opportunity to encourage others
to discover or rediscover the pleasures of reading.
On November 8, 2023, Awasian Elementary School embraced the spirit of National
Reading Month with gusto, under the theme "PAGBASA: Pag-asa sa Matatag na
Kinabukasan," which translates to "Reading: Hope for a Strong Future." The school
community came together to kick off a month-long celebration dedicated to fostering a
love for reading among its students.
Central to the festivities was the unveiling of the Mystery Reader—a beloved tradition
that adds an element of excitement and intrigue to the event. Each day, a different
mystery reader would captivate the students with a story, while teachers concocted
engaging questions to challenge the young minds. Those who dared to accept the
challenge were rewarded with snacks and school supplies, further fueling their
enthusiasm for reading.
But the celebration didn't stop there. Teachers at Awasian Elementary School went the
extra mile to make each day of National Reading Month memorable and enriching. They
introduced daily quests and activities aimed at making reading both fun and
educational. Through class discussions, students were encouraged to explore new
ideas, sharpen their critical thinking skills, and develop a deeper appreciation for
literature.
In the midst of it all, the timeless words of Dr. Seuss echoed through the halls of the
school: "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you
learn, the more places you'll go." These words served as a poignant reminder of the
profound impact that reading can have on a child's life, opening doors to endless
possibilities and shaping the future.
As the month-long celebration drew to a close, there was a palpable sense of
accomplishment and optimism at Awasian Elementary School. The seeds of a lifelong
love for reading had been planted, nurtured by the collective efforts of teachers,
students, and parents alike. And as the school looked towards the future, there was no
doubt that the gift of reading would continue to inspire, empower, and transform lives for
generations to come.
