Gases
❑ All particles are the same size.
❑ No particles are touching each other (distance between
them is about x10 diameter of each particle).
❑ Particles have arrows to show movement.
❑ The substance does not have a fixed shape and is easy to
compress.
Energy inside a substance
All particles have Kinetic Energy
– this is linked to temperature.

Temperature is the Average

Kinetic Energy of 1 particle.

What do you think happens if the temperature is

increased? Do the particles move faster or slower …?
Heating increases pressure
If a gas is heated, its particles move around more quickly. They hit the walls of their
container harder and more often. This increases the pressure. Sometimes the pressure gets
so great that the container bursts.
This is why balloons and tyres burst if you blow them up too much. It is also
why deodorant spray cans carry warning signs to tell you not to leave them in
the sunshine. If they get too hot they may explode!

If a balloon is squeezed it will get smaller. If the pressure is increased, the volume will
decrease.
Pressure and temperature
If the volume of a container with a gas inside stays the same, the pressure of a
gas increases as its temperature increases.

The temperature of a gas is a measure of the average kinetic energy of its

particles – the higher the temperature, the higher the average kinetic energy.
When hotter, the gas particles will be travelling faster and will collide with the
walls of the container more frequently and with more force.
Balloons shrink when placed
inside a beaker of cold liquid
nitrogen!

When the temperature in a gas increases, volume will also increase, so

that the pressure stays the same!!!
