• We are going to plot a cooling curve for salol.
• It will start as a liquid and we are going to look at what happens to the
temperature as it cools and forms a solid.

Salol is changing state where the graph is flat

This is the temperature at which it melts/solidifies.

Is the mass of the Salol changing? If we heat it back up will it make


the same volume of liquid Salol?

The temperature of salol decrease until x temperature. The graph is then horizontal, showing
that temperature is not decreasing. The graph stays horizontal for x amount of time and then
temperature decreases again.

What is happening in the flat part of the graph?


The Salol is changing state from liquid to solid. The temperature will not drop until it is all
solid.

Is the mass of the Salol changing? If we heat it back up will it make the same volume of
liquid Salol?
Yes – it is a physical change, not a chemical change, so mass does not change.
