This document contains tutorial problems for a mechanical systems and design course. Problem 1 involves determining the required diameter of pins subjected to a 4 kN load based on allowable shear stress, and calculating normal stress in various frame members. Problem 2 involves determining the maximum uniform load intensity that can be applied to a frame before average normal or shear stress at a section exceeds given values.

Week 2 Problem 1 The frame is subjected to the load of 4 kN which acts on member ABD at D. Determine the required diameter of the pins at D and C if the allowable shear stress for the material is 𝜏𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒 = 40 MPa. Pin C is subjected to double shear, whereas pin D is subjected to single shear. If cross sectional area of members AD, ED and BC are equal to 400, 200, 150 mm2 respectively, calculate normal stress in each section of these three members.
Figure 1. Schematic for problem 1.
Problem 2 Determine the largest intensity 𝑤 of the uniform loading that can be applied to the frame without causing either the average normal stress or the average shear stress at section 𝑏– 𝑏 to exceed 𝜎 = 15 MPa and 𝜏 = 16 MPa, respectively. Member CB has a square cross section of 30 mm on each side.
