effects of climate change.
Explain how different factors affect the climate of an area (S9ES-IIIe-30).

C. Learning Competencies/ Specifically, at the end of the period, the learners should be able to:
Objectives 1. Define environmental lapse rate;
Write the LC code for 2. Explain how latitude and altitude affect climate;
each 3. Demonstrate to the class the reason why there is no snow or glaciers in the
Philippines.

new lesson Have some learners share what they learned on the climate system.
Build the lesson from their observation that the general climate of the Philippines
is warm and wet. Ask the learners if they know other countries that have similar
climate with that of the Philippines. Also, ask them if they know some countries
B. Establishing a purpose which are cold and experience snow fall some time of the year. The main motive
for the lesson questions for the day would be the following:
● Why does climate vary from one country to another?
● What factors affect the climate of a place or country?

Tell the learners to go to their group and give them their task card for the day. At
the same time, provide them the materials needed for their activity: globe and
flashlight. Allow them to work for 10 minutes only.
C. Presenting Task Card:

the new lesson explanation for the difference in temperature among the cities included. Assign
one member to demonstrate your explanation in front of the class.

#1 The main question that must be answered by their presentation is:
● How does latitude affect the climate of a place?

After they are able to answer the main question, show to the class the table seen
in their Learner’s Manual.

Allow the groups to discuss once again among themselves and let them explain
why Baguio and Tagaytay have lower average temperature than the other cities
considering the fact that these are still part of the Philippines which is near to the
equator. Give them another 5 minutes to do this.

Each group will try to give a sound explanation for this. Facilitate the discussion
with these main questions for them to answer:

Thumbs Up-Thumbs Down: Ask the learners to do a Thumbs Up if they understood

the following concepts and a Thumbs Down if otherwise.
1. Climate vary from one place to another.
I. Evaluating learning 2. Latitude affects the climate due to the unequal heating of the Sun.
3. The higher the place the cooler.
4. It is not possible to have glaciers or snow in our country.

TEACHER HANDOUT

Important Notes:
● The temperature decrease in the troposphere is called the environmental lapse rate. Its average
value is 6.5 oC per kilometer, a figure known as the normal lapse rate. This value is not constant
though, it may be highly variable from time to time and from one place to another.
● Higher places, even though near the equator, like Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa experience a very low
temperature so it is covered with ice cap.
● Places near the equator receive greater amount of solar energy thus experience higher temperature
compared to other places on Earth. The angle of solar rays receive in this place is near 90o. This
region of the Earth is called the Tropics.
● As latitude increases, the angle of solar rays is reduced. Meaning, the solar energy is more dispersed
in these areas thus the temperature is relatively lower.
