THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA TO SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL ACADEMIC

ACHIEVERS IN GENERAL VITO BELARMINO INTERGRATED NATIONAL HIGH
SCHOOL

THEORY:

According to Festinger in (1954s) The Social Comparison Theory, In the context of social
media and SHS academic achievers, this theory can explain how students compare their
academic performance with their peers’ online, influencing their own motivation and self-
perception. And also According to Bandura in (1977s) The Social Learning Theory. In the
context of social media and SHS academic achievers, this theory suggests that students may
observe and model behaviors related to study habits, time management, and academic
engagement from their peers on social media platforms.

RELATED STUDY:

Paul, Baker and Cochran (2012), the time spent on social media was dependent on the
attention span of the students. Attention span is the amount of time for which students can
concentrate on their study without getting distracted. They found out that, higher the attention
span, lower is the time spent by students on social media.

Yunus and Salehi (2012) pointed out that, social media use enhanced students’ vocabulary
and writing ability. However, social media can affect their academic performance it can lead
to distraction in doing their tasks.

According to Ghulam Murtaza (2023), the influence of social media on students’ ability to
focus on their studies is a source of debate. Despite the fact that social media may be a source
of distraction and difficulty, it also presents chances to educate oneself, work together, and
make new connections. Students may find a middle ground between their social media
activities and their academic performance by encouraging responsible use, teaching them to
manage their time well, encouraging them to value themselves, combating cyberbullying, and
making use of available educational resources. Students need to be aware of the ways in
which they use the internet and work to make social media an asset to their study rather than
a distraction.
