ENERGY SOURCE AND ENERGY PRODUCED

1) What’s the difference between energy source and energy produced? Can you give examples?

2) Read the text below and answer the following questions:

Energy is the ability to cause a change. There are many types of changes that energy can cause to happen, for
example: changing an object's position, changing the temperatura, changing a substance’s state of matter.
These all changes require energy.

There are five types of energy: mechanical energy, electrical energy, light energy, thermal energy and sound
energy.

Mechanical energy is the energy that is related to an object's position and motion. Therefore, mechanical energy
is related to the location of an object and its movement. Mechanical means movement; if you see something
moving, it means that mechanical energy is involved.

Electrical energy is the energy that travels through the wires of a circuit. We normally just call this electricity.
Every appliance that gets plugged in uses electrical energy.

Light energy is a type of energy that travels in waves and allows us to see. Light energy might come out of a bulb
or it can come from the Sun. Light energy from the Sun is so important that it has its own name: solar energy

Thermal energy is more commonly called heat. Thermal energy might be produced by a fire or by a hot plate or a
heat lamp. When air is heated, it rises. All bulbs produce light and heat. Some bulbs are mainly used as a source
of light energy but others are used as a source of thermal energy-

Sound energy is the type of energy that travels in waves and allows us to hear. Sound energy is easy to recognize.
If something is making a noise or a sound, it is producing sound energy.

When we refer to an object's energy source we refer to the energy going into the object. Electrical energy is the
energy source for things that are plugged in. When you see solar panels, it means that the energy source is light.
The solar panels absorb light energy so that energy can be used to do other things.
When we refer to the energy produced, we are talk about the energy coming out of the object. A hot plate gives
off heat so it produces thermal energy.
We need to know the difference between the energy source and the energy produced. Electricity goes into a hot
plate so electrical energy is the energy source but heat comes out of the hot plate so thermal energy is the energy
produced. Therefore, energy source=energy going in; energy produced=energy coming out.
