ENERGY AND MOTION

Energy is the ability to do work. It is present anywhere. It is needed by organisms and

machines to work.  The primary source of energy and major source of energy is the sun.
Without the light coming from the sun, life on earth would not be possible. The search for
energy  sources and their development has become important in our world today.

EXPETED OUTCOME

      Explore the different forms of energy.

      Understand hoe energy can be changed from one form to another.
      Explain what makes objects move and the factors that affect their motion.

KEY QUESTIONS

1.  What makes energy an important part of everyday life?

2.  Why should we conserve energy?
3.   How do the laws of motion affect our daily lives?

Energy can be classified into two general types: kinetic and potential energy. Potential
energy is the energy stored in an object at rest, for example, a ball held above the ground and a
stretched rubber band in the slingshot and a boulder on a hill. Kinetic energy is the energy in
motion. Examples are a stone released by the slingshot and a ball rolling on the ground.

ACTIVITY

INVESTIGATING FORMS OF ENERGY

Problem: What are the different forms of energy?

What you need:

          Pinwheel                   candle                   matches                      guitar
          Plastic comb

What to do:

1. Perform the following. Observe and identify the different forms of energy
     Present in the different materials.

A. Observe what is found at the end of the matchstick. Light the candle using the
matchstick. What form of energy is present in the lighted candle?

What form of energy found at the end of the matchstick?

B. Pluck the guitar. What form of energy is produced by the guitar?

How is this form of energy produced?

C.  Make a pinwheel. Blow some air in the pinwheel. What happens when the
Wind comes in contact with the pinwheel?

What form of energy is produced by the pinwheel?

D. Vigorously comb your hair. (Be sure that the hair is dry and clean.) Place this
Comb near the dry bits of paper. Describe what happened.

What form of energy is formed when the comb is placed near the dry bits of paper?
