With this activity, you are expected to achieve the following learning
outcome:

- Investigate how languages shape the cultural identity of foreign language


learners in contrast to their own culture.

The activity consists of:

Step 1

- Go to the Learning Environment and check the references.


- Based on your experience and your place of residence, reflect on the following
questions in the forum:
o What languages and dialects are you aware of in your own department?
o How can you tell the difference between these different languages and
dialects?
o Can you think of some examples where one object has a range of
different names in your language? Why do you think this is?

Step 2

- Go to the Learning Environment and answer these questions:


o How have borders changed in your country over time?
o To what extent do the national and regional borders reflect the languages
spoken there?
Share and discuss your thoughts with other learners in the forum.

Step 3

Prepare the cultural dinner.


- Select Cultural Themes: Choose one or multiple cultures that will be the
focus of the virtual dinner. Consider the availability and feasibility of obtaining
or preparing food items representative of these cultures.

- Announce and Prepare Participants: Inform participants in advance about the


cultural dinner event and encourage them to prepare a dish or drink from the chosen
culture(s). Provide recipes or suggestions for authentic dishes they can make at home.

- Schedule the Virtual Dinner: Set a date and time for the online event. Use a
video conferencing platform that allows for interaction and sharing.

- Create a Cultural Atmosphere: Encourage participants to dress in attire


typical of the chosen culture(s). Play background music or display images
related to the culture(s) to set the mood.

- Introductions and Sharing: Start the event with introductions and a brief
overview of the cultural significance of the dishes being shared. Each
participant can take turns presenting their dish, explaining its cultural
importance, ingredients, and preparation method.

- Enjoy the Dinner Together: Participants can enjoy their meals while
interacting virtually. Encourage people to discuss the flavors, ingredients, and
personal experiences related to the dishes.

- Cultural Activities or Games: Incorporate cultural activities or games related


to the chosen culture(s). This could include language-related games, cultural
trivia, or storytelling sessions.

- Reflective Discussion: Towards the end of the event, facilitate a discussion about
what participants learned, their favorite dishes, cultural similarities or differences, and
any new insights gained.
