LO 1: Maintaining Hand Tools, Drawing Instruments,
Equipment, and Paraphernalia
What’s In
In our previous topic, you have learned the different kinds of drawing
tools and equipment together with its uses. As a grade 7 student, maybe this
is the first time that you own some of the drawing tools and equipment.
Having knowledge on how to use the tools does not end your responsibility as
a user. It is important also for you to know and learn how to maintain your
tools and equipment for it to last longer. You can assure that your tools will
last long if you patiently and religiously take care of them.
4
What’s New
Situation:
Your mother bought you all the needed drawing tools for you to use in
your drawing subject. You knew that your mother really saves money just to
buy you those tools. Now, what will you do to your drawing tools so that it will
last longer and your mother will not spend money again for it?
What is It
Drafting tools are often delicate and have many intricate and small
pieces that need to be well maintained to continue working properly.
Organizing and storing these items has a great deal to do with keeping
them in pristine shape or in a good condition and working correctly. With a
little patience and developing a routine, your tools will be well taken care of
and working for a long time.
Good quality drawing tools can be quite an investment, but if you take
good care of them, they'll return the favor.
5
THE PROPER CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF
DRAWING TOOLS
PENCIL
a. Never sharpen the pencil over the drawing or close to any of your
equipment.
b. Always keep the lead sharp.
Common problems:
Leads keep breaking when you do sharpening. Choose a good quality
of a sharpener with a very sharp blade.
Double lines. Make sure that your pencil is in conical form, sharp and
pointed.
Common problems:
Chipped, nicked, and cracked edges surfaces.
RULER or SCALE
a. Scales should not be pricked with needle points of either the divider or
compass when measurements are taken.
b. Do not use scale as a ruler.
Common problems:
Faded hatch marks.
6
TECHNICAL PENS
a. After using, clean the speed ball pen by wiping-off or scraping the ink
on it with clean cloth, which is a little wet or you may use blade for
scrapping.
b. Lettering pens, like technical pens, should be clean at once with clean
water and soap. Wipe it off with clean cloth.
Common problems:
Lead breaks when drawing. Draw with the right amount of pressure.
Lead does not come out. Check if it still have lead. Remove clogs or
blockage caused by broken leads.
Common problems:
Legs move loosely. Tighten the screw.
Needle slides does not hold in position when drawing. The needle may
be dull. Sharpen the needle’s point.
DRAWING PAPER
Common problems:
Easily crumpled. Place your drawing paper in a rolling tube.
7
DRAWING BOARD
Common problems:
Wiggling and shaking surface. Tighten the lock nut or screws in the leg
adjustment.
