RT-96 Exhaust Valve Spindle Lubrication
RT-96 Exhaust Valve Spindle Lubrication
BULLETIN
Concerned products
Wärtsilä RT-flex96C-B, RT-flex84T-D,
RT-flex82C and RT-flex82T engines with
Information to all Owners and Operators of Pulse Lubricating System. It is
Wärtsilä RT-flex96C-B, RT-flex84T-D, RT-flex82C and irrespective, if the Pulse Lubricating
RT-flex82T engines System was initially installed or if it is a
retrofit version.
Current Situation
Wärtsilä received reports about air
leakages in the air spring of the exhaust
valve drive.
Problem
Insufficient lubrication of the exhaust valve
stem and rod joint ring lead to higher wear
rates.
Solution
When the engine is in operation, the
exhaust valve stem and guide bush shall
be permanently lubricated through the
cylinder oil feed connection.

Introduction
Wärtsilä received reports about engines equipped with the Pulse Lubricating
System, mentioning air leakages in the air spring through the valve spindle rod
joint ring. Due to insufficient lubrication on the valve stem and rod joint ring, the
wear rate on the valve stem and rod joint ring might be higher.
As a result, the moving function becomes insufficient and this might affect the
closing time of the exhaust valve.
Note:
Prior to opening the stop valve (1), the orifice of size 0.5 mm (2) has to be
checked if blocked or not. In addition, the non-return valve (3) and the entire pipe
(4) must be checked for free passage, see Figure 1.
4 1
In order to ensure the lubrication is working, you have to check the entire
lubricating oil pipe (4) up to the exhaust valve cage inlet bore, Figure 2. This is
done by disconnecting the screw-in union (5) at the exhaust valve inlet
connection. Having the stop valve (1) in the open position and with the lubricating
pump working, oil should flow through the complete lubricating system. With this
test you also ensure that the system is vented and at the same time priming of
the lubricating system is done.
Note:
To check the condition of the rod joint ring means checking the pressure drop in
the air spring.
Preparation:
To perform the air leakage check a special connecting device has to be made
beforehand which consist of a shut-off valve, a pressure gauge and an air
pressure connection. The pressure gauge must cover a range from 0 to 10 bar.
Depending on the engine type, the special connecting device differs as shown in
Figure 3 and Figure 4.

Attention:
If the pressure drop is higher than 2.0 bar within 15 minutes, then Wärtsilä
recommends overhauling the exhaust valve at the next convenient
opportunity.
8. Remove the special connecting device and re-connect the air supply pipe to
the exhaust valve cage.
On the removed exhaust valve, the rod joint ring (4) has to be replaced and the
exhaust valve stem has to be measured to determine the wear. The maximum
allowable wear of the exhaust valve stem is listed in the Maintenance Manual
Group 0, Chapter 0330.
When an exhaust valve is overhauled, the oil bores of the valve cage (5) and
guide bush (6) have to be checked for free passage. Details about exhaust valve
overhaul are given in the Maintenance Manual Group 2, Chapter 2751.
