1.1 AIR EXERCISES REFERENCE LIST

At the beginning of the course Administration has to prepare a personal logbook for each
student, where there are reported all the long briefings and the air exercises of the course.
The log book shall be used by instructor and student as quick reference list of the content of
flight course.

1.2 COURSE STRUCTURE – PHASE OF TRAINING

1.2.1 Flight lessons

The PPL (A) course comprises 40 flight lessons as reported in the following table. Each of the
exercises involves the need for the applicant to be aware of the needs of good airmanship and
look-out, which should be emphasised at all times.
The forms of the Flight Lessons Reports to be used are in Appendix2.
The numbering of exercises should be used primarily as an exercise reference list and as a
broad instructional sequencing guide; therefore the demonstrations and practices need not
necessarily be given in the order listed. The actual order and content will depend upon the
following interrelated factors:
(i) the applicant’s progress and ability;
(ii) the weather conditions affecting the flight;
PART 2 Page 3
TRAINING MANUAL
PPL(A) Edition:1
Revision: 2
24/04/14

(iii) the flight time available;

(iv) instructional technique considerations;
(v) the local operating environment;
(vi) applicability of the exercises to the aeroplane.
In this case the relevant items shall be left blank and an asterisk shall be added. In the note
area a remark shall be entered to detail the reasons for postponing.
The items not covered should be completed as soon as possible in order to regain the training
as planned (missed items shall be written in subsequent Flight Lessons Reports as required). In
any case they shall be completed before the end of the training course.

1.3 COURSE STRUCTURE- INTEGRATION OF SYLLABI

The integration of syllabi should be assured by the CGI and CFI planning the course in order
that the Theory subjects are taught to the applicant before he practises the air exercise that can
be appropriately accomplishment only if the related theoretical notion are known.
The following table underline the connection between the theory subjects and the air exercises.

1.4 STUDENT PROGRESS

The times and the types of the flight activity of the student must continuously be kept under
control by the instructor in order to remain as much as possible within the time limits established
at the previous paragraph 2.4.1.
At the end of each flight the flight instructor shall report the result of the flight on the Flight
Lesson report. The report with the signature of the instructor and the student shall then be put in
the Personal flight Training Logbook of the student by the instructor.
The progress of the student shall be continuously checked by the instructor verifying the aircraft
theoretical knowledge, the flight ability and the airmanship of the student.
The pass to the next phase is done only if the student has reached the standard values
requested by the previous flight lessons.

1.5 INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS

Before each flight lesson it is mandatory to conduct a briefing. The briefing normally includes a
statement of the aim and a brief allusion to principles of flight only if relevant. An expla nation
will be given on how an air exercises have to be taught by the instructor and practised by the
student during the flight. It will include how the flight will be conducted with regard to who flies
the aeroplane and how airmanship, weather and flight safety aspects must be applied. The
nature of the lesson will govern the order in which the constituent parts have to be taught.
During which the following items will be discusses, focused and planned:
 target of the flight lesson and particularity arising during the specific training flight
lesson;
 explanation of the manoeuvres scheduled during the flight lesson;
 suggestions given by the Instructor to get the best performances and to avoid the most
common mistakes;
 any safety related matter concerned with the specific flight lesson.
PART 2 Page 6
TRAINING MANUAL
PPL(A) Edition:1
Revision: 2
24/04/14

A de-briefing is mandatory after each flight lesson (one flight lesson may include one or more
flights, depending on the schedule). During the de-briefing the following items will be discussed
by the Instructor:
 summary of the manoeuvres demonstrated, trained or checked;
 level of performance reached by the Student. The Instructor has to put particular
emphasis on the item graded “VP” (Very Poor) or “P” (Poor);
 suggestions to improve the performances;
 introduction of the manoeuvres to be taught during the next training flight lesson.
It is responsibility of the Instructor to completely fill the flight lesson report at the end of the de -
briefing, to write the relevant remarks in the Note area, to sign it with his/her signature and with
the signature of the Student.

1.6 PROGRESS TESTS

During the course there are scheduled progress tests at the end of each flight module as
reported in the Appendix 6.
