Rationale of the Study

The use of stainless steel utensils plays a vital role in the environment as people

profusely utilize it in their daily lives instead of using single use plastic utensils. For the

students of St. Alphonsus Catholic School, bringing personal utensils everyday can be a

way to achieve an easy, efficient, and a safe way to eat hygienically. Opting for

stainless steel utensils can not only be beneficial to the environment, but it can also be

more convenient material wise. Not only will the Senior High School students of St

Alphonsus Catholic School be able to provide themselves with a set of utensils, the

students will also be able to contribute in lowering the cases of plastic made material

pollution within the campus especially with the rising waste being accumulated in the

environment, the proposition of using stainless steel utensils is greatly beneficial for

both the students and the environment.

In relation to this research, a conducted International Literature presenting the

environmental benefits of replacing disposable plastic tableware which states the

evaluation of the alternative representation of each of its comprehensive performance in

portraying a role in order to address plastic pollution. (Fan, Quanyin, Kaixin, Jinhui

et.al., 2022). Reducing disposable plastic products is and has always remained in the

spotlight Therefore, one must opt for another option. With this in correlation to the said

literature, Tingley, C., Bigelow, D., Allen, R., & Johnson, J. (2011) had made an

International Study stating the investigation into reusable cutlery/utensils solutions.

Their goal was to address the benefits and drawbacks of each used material in detail

and is dedicated to spot the environmental standard in accordance to its social and
economical factors to prove that stainless steel is one of the most viable options to

choose from in link to its portability, accessibility and safeness. Demonstrating the

negative impacts of using stainless steel utensils must also be stated for full

transparency. The use of metal cutlery poses an environmental concern that

biodegradable utensils don’t have: the impact of cleaning the utensils (Treger, M., Poon,

F., Muhsin, M., Kwan, J., & Banerjee, T., 2010). The importance of this study is that it

conveys the negative impacts of using stainless steel utensils. For example, using

stainless steel utensils poses an environmental risk due to the chemicals contained in

the cleaning agent, while the influence of cleaning biodegradable utensils does not

exist.

Since the state of the St. Alphonsus Catholic School campus can be greatly

affected by these circumstances. Opting for sustainable and eco-friendly utensils is

greatly encouraged that can prosper a good difference over time. Estimating the

frequency of carriage for these stainless steel utensils can help the assessment of

preference and utility amongst the Senior High School students. The researchers are

determined to assess both positive and negative impacts of bringing stainless steel

utensils inside the campus. Furthermore, more feasible alternatives will also be

evaluated in case Senior High School students fail to bring the said utensils.

Availability of the stainless steel utensil is indeed one of the problems the group

faces in conducting this research. An orderly way of approaching the problem is

required with a view to solve this drawback. Identifying sources, the drawbacks of

bringing and not bringing personal utensils on campus is one of our strategies in hope
to solve this problem. Taking into consideration its impact towards the Senior High

School students and its contribution to reduce the usage of plastic utensils within the

campus.
