INTRODUCTION

A video of a sea turtle with a plastic straw on its nostrils went viral online,

causing a ripple among the people. People slowly started becoming more aware and

accountable regarding their actions in promoting proper disposal of plastic wastes with

the knowledge of how it affects not just the environment on land but also to the marine

ecosystems. Although human wastes is a long overdue problem, plastic is a main

contended for pollution considering that it is not biodegradable. Due to this scenario fast

food chains, restaurants and many local businesses have all decided to refrain from

using plastic straw by opting for metal straws and bamboo straws instead so that they

would serve as an example for the community, especially small businesses to stop

using plastic straws to lessen the plastic pollution.

On the other hand some advocates are going with the trends without analyzing

if the solution is concrete. People should be more mature in solving not just the plastic

pollution but the increase of garbage and wastes produced that has a great contribution

to Climate Change.

Metal or Stainless Steel Straw solve the issue of plastic straw but create

another problem, it added in the product line of Stainless Steel that came from Nickel

and Copper. Nickel mining results to massive deforestation and contaminate our waters.
Bamboos are a group of woody perennial evergreen plants in the true grass

family Poaceae. Some of its members are giants, forming by far the largest members of

the grass family. There are 91 genera and about 1,000 species of bamboo. Bamboo is a

great plant to utilize for individuals concerned with the welfare of the environment.

Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on this planet. It has recorded growing at an

amazing 47.6 inches in a 24 hour period.

With the ongoing mass production of these two straws people would think

twice in accepting a plastic straw and be more conscious in dealing with single used

plastic wastes considering the provided alternatives. One of the main reasons as to why

people slowly started trying to adapt the no to plastic straw initiative is because there

are programs presented encouraging people to stop using plastic straw. For basis

Bacolod City National High School implemented the “No Plastic Policy” within the school

grounds. Bringing plastics inside the school premises is prohibited and it is confiscated

upon gate entry. Although provided these options the current problem regarding the

plastic straw pollution also speaks about the discipline of students when it comes to

plastic waste management where in they had to adjust to these circumstances where

they have to bring their own personal tumblers, containers and utensils. The benefit

upon purchasing reusable straws like bamboo straw and metal straw is that they come

in handy in all areas of consuming beverages and it helps to reduce plastic wastes.

This proposal outlines the preferences of the students between the metal

straw and bamboo straw to the students that are enrolled in the academic track STEM

of Bacolod City National High School – Senior High School. The researchers intend to
find out the likes of the students regarding the quality of the materials used to produce

these alternative straws between metal straw and bamboo straws and as to why they

are encouraged to purchase in the first place.

OBJECTIVES

General Objective:

Generally, the present study aims to determine the perspective of Bacolod City

National High School senior high school students regarding the use of metal straws and

bamboo straws as substitute for plastic straws to lessen the plastic wastes and

encourage the students to support eco-friendly products.

Specifically, it aims to:

1. To determine the profile of senior high school students when grouped according

to:

a. Sex

b. Grade level

c. Academic track
2. To determine which among the metal straw and bamboo straw is preferred by the

senior high school students grouped into different variables.

3. To determine significant responses from students regarding their preferred type

of straw between metal straw and bamboo straw

Statements of the problem:

1. What is the profile of senior high school students when grouped according to:

d. sex

e. grade level

f. academic track

2. Which among the metal straw and bamboo straw is preferred by senior high

school students when grouped into different variables?

3. What are the significant responses of senior high school students regarding their

preferred type of straw.

Hypotheses

1. There is no significant difference in the extent of the perception of the SHS

students of Bacolod City National High School on the use of metal straw and
bamboo straw as a substitute for plastic straws to lessen the plastic waste and

encourage the students to support eco-friendly products.

2. There is a significant difference in the extent of perception of the SHS students of

Bacolod City National High School on the use of metal straw and bamboo straw

as substitute for plastic straws to lessen the plastic waste and encourage the

students to support eco- friendly products

THEORETICAL FRAME WORK

MANILA - Senator Risa Hontiveros has filed a bill seeking a ban on single-use plastic

straws and stirrers in the food service in a bid to reduce waste that end up in landfills

and bodies of water. Hontiveros, in a statement, said her Senate Bill No. 1866 bans

establishments from offering consumers single-use plastic straws and stirrers, the most

common plastic products found in oceans. e

The proposed law also mandates food establishments and other service providers

occupying fixed spaces, such as sari-sari stores, to prominently display signs informing

their customers of their no plastic straw and stirrer policy.

In drinking beverages outside the customs of home, restaurants, fast food chains, take

out, fine dining etc. often serve their drinks accompanied with plastic straws. This goes

to show how easy people dispose single used plastic, if not thrown properly inside the

trash bin these wastes end up in the streets.

Bacolod City National High School is undergoing a no plastic policy in school grounds.

Due to this scenario students are no longer allowed to bring any type of plastic inside

the premises. Even the vendors inside the canteen are prohibited to use non-reusable

plastic containers.

The correlation of this theory to the current problem is if small practices like this are

done inside the school premises, students are able to forbid themselves in using plastic

straws outside. This theory focuses on banning the single used plastic mantra to

support an eco friendly environment

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

This study aims to find out the perceptions of the senior high school students in Bacolod

City National High School under the respective academic strand STEM, (Science,

Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) in both grade levels specifically regarding

the usage of metal straw and bamboo straw as the replacement for plastic straws for a

more eco-friendly approach. This research study would be conducted between August

2019 and October 2019

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will benefit the following subjects.

1. Students

2. Environment

3. Marine Life

These following subjects will benefit from this study in the case of:

The students will be able to find out what is the most reliable and efficient kind of straw

to use.

They can contribute on reducing on the use of plastic straws. It can give the ideas and

can lead to innovate for the benefit of the most individuals.

Environment, in conducting this study we have our main goal to attain and that is to

reduce or prevent the rampancy of using plastic straws, plastics, especially plastic straw

are one of the causes that our environment is suffering on the plastic waste

management. By this study, we can recommend them to use other kinds of straws

rather than plastic especially ones.

Marine life, it is widely spreading that plastic straw once harmed an innocent sea turtles

on the other hand, marine life will be highly benefits with our study for the reason that
using metal or bamboo straws will be more efficient because it is said that it can be

recycled and is biodegradable.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Perceptions- Perception has sometimes been defined as "the consciousness of

particular material things present to sense."Perception is as a matter of fact always a

larger thing than this definition would immediately imply; because we are always aware

in the "fringe" in the background of consciousness, of sense activities other than those

we speak of as being perceived, especially those connected with the internal operations

of our own organism. Perception as psychologists describe it, is therefore, like

sensation, something of an abstraction.

( James Rowland Angell 2007 )

Operationally, this is the perspective of the students regarding the usage of metal

straws and bamboo straws as the substitute for plastic straws

Use- To do something with an object, machine, person or method in order to

accomplish a task or do an activity. The act way or extent of using or treating or

treatment use. The way in which a word, phrase, etc is used to express a particular

idea; customary manner of using the words of a given language in speaking or writing,

or an instance of this.

(Collins 2015)
Operationally this talks about the purpose of straws being used to sip drinks on for a

more accessible way for drinking.

CHAPTER 2

Review of Related Literature

Our country is listed as one of the world’s leading plastic polluters of the ocean,

according to Watchdog Greenpeace. Plastic waste especially, plastic straws are used in

a large number of establishments with food and beverages as a primary or secondary

business. These include causal and fast-food restaurants, cafes, hotels and motels,

theatres, food trucks, kiosks, air-lines, cruise ships, bars, night clubs, delicatessens,

coffee, bars, and sports venues. They also are used at cafeterias in schools and

colleges, governments, prisons, hospitals, public facilities, and businesses. And finally,

they are used at special events including festivals, fairs, and concerts.

As this issue arises at the peek of our global agenda, there is also a corresponding

rise in grassroots efforts to curb the consumption of plastics. These grassroots efforts

focused on governments and local, national, and multi-national businesses to address

the problem of plastic waste; plastic straws were especially targeted because they are

an easily avoidable product. Cited from a past study related to this issue that in North

America there have been many local and national campaigns for consumers and

businesses to voluntarily reduce straws including National Skip the Straw Day, Straw

Wars, Straws Suck, the Last Plastic Straw, One Less Straw, and No Straw Please.
Metal or Stainless Steel Straw solve the issue of plastic straws but create another

problem, it added in the product line of Stainless Steel that came from Nickel and

Copper. Nickel Mining result to massive deforestation and contaminating our waters.

Think of millions of metal straws to be possibly produce if how many mountains will be

destroyed because of Nickel Mining. The point here if the production of stainless straw

will increase the demand of nickel will increase also that possibly will destroy our

mountains, forest and body of waters. One of problem of some of the advocates are

going with the trends without analyzing if the solution is concrete. Let’s be more mature

in solving not just the plastic pollution but the increase of garbage and waste we

produce that have a great contribution in Climate Change.

Plastic straws are one of the most commonly found plastics under the sea. It is

consumed on a large value of number. People nowadays are slowly adapting zero

waste lifestyle however there are still that are confused on what kind of straw they

should choose-either bamboo or metal.

We all know that bamboo trees are one of the fastest growing plant in the

Philippines so we can say that it will be more effective and non-hassle to use bamboo

straws because aside from it is a fast growing plant in our country, it also releases 30%

of oxygen which humans intake. Those who are more on natural side can choose

bamboo straw. On the other hand, metal straws can also be one of the substitutes in
using plastic straws. It reduces the possibility of increasing the rate of plastic straws.

Thus, it can also cause bad effects, since metal straws were technically made of nickel

and nickel mining destroys our biodiversity.

Research Locale

The present study will be conducted at Bacolod City National High School STEM senior

high school student. The selection of the locale is on the consideration that the school

presently implements no plastic-policy among students.

Research Design

This present study aims to determine the preferences of Bacolod City National High

School Senior High School students regarding the use of metal straws and bamboo

straws as substitute for plastic straws to lessen the plastic wastes and encourage the

students to support eco-friendly products.

Based on the objectives of the present study Quantitative Descriptive research design is

the most appropriate method to be used.

Quantitative research says Leedy (2013) is a research method dealing with numbers

and anything that is measurable in a systematic way of investigation of phenomena and

their relationship it is used to answer questions on relationships within measurable

variables with an intention go explain, predict and control a phenomenon. Descriptive

research on the other hand according to Kumar (2011), is a research design that

attempts to describe systematically a situation problem, phenomenon, service or

program or provides information about it. Also Kumar (2013), further described

descriptive research as a design with the main purpose of describing what is prevalent

with respect to the issue/problem under study.

Research Respondents

Respondents are from the academic track for they have a wider scope on dealing about

the issue of "No Plastic Policy" .It will be more convenient for us to conduct the survey

with the said respondents. It can give us farther knowledge on how we can be able to

implement the gathered data base on their assumptions from the survey. There will be

two possible implication. It will either be the data will be significant to our own postulate

or there will be another outcome.

Research Instrument

In this study the instrument will be used is a survey questionnaire in order to gather data

and information from the respondents of the study. This survey questionnaire will be

composed of two parts, part one for the demographic profile of correspondents and part

two is for the questions. The question should be validated by an expert. This survey

questionnaire should be given to those STEM senior high school students of Bacolod

City National High School. The question should gather data about the perception of

STEM senior high school students of Bacolod City National High School.

Research Validity
In this study the validity was done with the help of research experts. One expert is an

expert of the implementation of no plastic policy while the other two experts are

research experts. The content review was done by this experts and validity of this

instruments was performed and validated using the Good and Skates validity

instrument.

Research Reliability

Reliability is the degree to which the research method used produces stable and

consistent results. A specific measure is considered to be reliable if its application on the

same object of measurement number of times produces the same results. In this study,

reliability is done by administering the questionnaire prior to its final conduct among the

final population. After its administration to another population data or the questionnaires

were gathered and the data from the questionnaire were tallied and were processed

using the statistical tool Cronbach's alpha

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers wrote a letter for the assistant principal of Bacolod City National High

School - Senior High Department to conduct a research. The researchers prepared a

questionnaire which is he instrument of the study. The participants of the study were the

STEM Antracite, Breccia, Gabbro, Antares, Sirius, Polaris.

Statistical Treatment
The first objective is to answer the statement of the problem number one is knowing the

profile of the senior high school students of Bacolod City National High School when

grouped according to sex, grade level, and academic track frequency and percentage

would be used. To answer the second objective to determine which among the metal

straw and bamboo straw is preferred by the senior high school students grouped into

different variables.
