Initiative of “Community Led Innovation for Climate Risk Mitigation in Bangladesh (CLIMB)”
project.
Hosted and facilitated by: CARE Bangladesh and International Center for Climate Change and
Development (ICCCAD)
BACKGROUND:
CARE Bangladesh is implementing the Community Led Innovation for Climate Risk Mitigation in
Bangladesh (CLIMB) program, a 4-year initiative in the southeast and southwest coastal regions in
Bangladesh. The project started on July’22, is implementing community led innovation for addressing
climate and anthropogenic challenges in 3 unions of 2 districts: Cox’s Bazar and Bagerhat. In Cox’s Bazar,
the key innovation challenges include forest degradation induced livelihood interference, firewood and water
scarcity, and social tensions between Rohingya and the Host Community. In Bagerhat, the main innovation
challenges are salinity intrusion, water scarcity, and the loss of biodiversity. The overarching goal of
CLIMB is to enhance the resilience and adaptive capacity of communities through locally led green and just
innovative solutions, coupled with an accountable service mechanism. In Cox’s Bazar, the focused is on
nature-based solutions to reduce or substitute the demand for timber, while in Bagerhat, the emphasize is on
market-based solutions, including small-scale, sustainable aqua farming, mangrove and local biodiversity
protection and restoration, and the promotion of saline-resistant crop varieties and markets.
CLIMB project is designed based on the principles of Locally Led Adaptation (LLA) and Nature based
Solution (NbS). The CLIMB team will organize this workshop to assess the alignment and performance of
project activities against LLA principles. Moreover, the second day of this workshop will continue the
discussion on innovation scaling, building on the insights gained from the scaling workshop in Cox’s Bazar
and Community of Practice Workshop 2023 in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia.
EVENT OBJECTIVES:
1. Planning of innovative ideas in piloting stage for scaling under CLIMB project
2. Sharing ICCCAD research findings from Sharahkhola filed survey on 8 principles of LLA, with a
focus on designing and implementing CLIMB.
3. Stakeholders’ consultation on strength, shortcomings, and prospect of LLA in CLIMB activities.
PARTICIPANTS: Project team members (both CARE and implementing partners) have been selected as
participants in the training.
