Part Brief Description

Wavelength Wavelength is measured as the distance between two crests.
Amplitude The maximum displacement or distance moved by a point on a vibrating body or
wave measured from its equilibrium position.
Crest The highest surface part of a wave.
Trough The lowest surface part of a wave.

QUESTIONS:
1. The wave illustrated in figure 1 is an Electromagnetic Wave.
2. The properties of a wave are Amplitude, Wavelength, Frequency, Period and Speed.
3. The characteristic of wave that changes as it travels is the Wavelength because it is the distance
between two crests.
4. Wave frequency is the number of waves that pass a fixed point in a given amount of time.
5. The direction a wave propagates is perpendicular to the direction it oscillates for transverse
waves.

CHECK POINT
TRUE 1. Electromagnetic wave transfers energy through vacuum.
TRUE 2. EM wave cannot travel through a medium.
TRUE 3. A changing magnetic field could produce a changing electric field.
Only a part 4. Most EM waves are visible and detectable.
TRUE 5. Accelerating electrons produce electromagnetic waves

unknown: 𝑓 unknown: λ unknown: 𝑓
since v = c = λf since v = c = λf since v = c = λf
therefore f = c/λ therefore λ = c/f therefore f = c/λ

QUESTIONS:
1. The 7 types of electromagnetic waves are Radio Waves, Microwave, Infrared wave, Visible light,
Ultraviolet ray, X-ray and Gamma ray.
2. Electromagnetic waves are arranged in the electromagnetic spectrum in order of increasing
frequency and decreasing wavelength.
3. The visible light spectrum is the section of the spectrum that can be seen by our eyes.
4. The wavelength and frequency of light are closely related. The higher the frequency, the shorter
the wavelength. Because all light waves move through a vacuum at the same speed, the number
of wave crests passing by a given point in one second depends on the wavelength.
5. Speed, Wavelength, and Frequency. The speed of a wave is a product of its wavelength and
frequency. Because all electromagnetic waves travel at the same speed through space,
a wave with a shorter wavelength must have a higher frequency, and vice versa.

III. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED?

POST ASSESSMENT
I.

Electromagnetic wave is a combination of electric and magnetic field. It is produced by accelerating

electrons. It has a speed of 300 000 000 m/s like the speed of light and could travel through vacuum. EM
waves differ in wavelength and frequency. Waves with longer wavelengths have lower frequency and
those that have shorter wavelengths have higher frequency and have the more energy. The unit used to
measure the frequency of a wave is Hertz and the wavelength is expressed in meters.
