Sl. Questions M BT CO
No.
1.(a) A 50 Hz synchronous generator having an internal voltage 1.1 pu, H=5 04 L3 2
MJ/MVA and a reactance of 0.3 pu is connected to an infinite bus
through a double circuit line, each line of reactance 0.4 pu. The
generator is delivering 0.8 pu power and the finite bus voltage is 1.0
pu. Determine maximum power transfer and steady state operating
(b) angle.
Write a Matlab code of swing equation using Modified Euler’s 06 L4 4
method.
2. A loss free alternator supplies 60 MW to an infinite bus, the SSSL being 10 L3 2
110MW. Determine if the alternator will remain stable if the input to
the prime mover of the alternator is abruptly increased by 40MW.

3. a) A lossless power system has to serve a load of 250MW. There are two 04 L3 2
generators in the system with cost curves as given below:
C1= Pg1+ 0.055 Pg1²
C2= 3Pg2+ 0.03 Pg2²
For min. cost dispatch, find Pg1 and Pg2, where Pg1 and Pg2 are MW
injections from generator G1 and G2 respectively.

b) With assumptions, derive power-angle equation for a non-salient pole 06 L4 3

machine. Also draw the power-angle characteristic and phasor
diagram.

4. What is the significance of equal area criterion? Explain the application 10 L2 3

of equal area criterion for the system stability study when sudden
change in mechanical input takes place.
5. The fuel cost functions in Rs/hr for three thermal plants are given by 10 L3 2
C1 = 400+5.1Pg1 +0.004Pg1²
C2 = 450+5.5Pg2 +0.002Pg2²
C3 = 200+5.8Pg3 +0.008Pg3²
Pg1, Pg2 and Pg3 are in MW. Find the optimal dispatch of the three
plants for a load of 800MW by iterative technique using gradient
method, if the limits are:
100 Pg1 250 MW ; 100 Pg2 500 MW; 25 Pg3 100 MW.
Assume initial λ= 6.5Rs/MWhr.
