D. Discussing new A measure of Central Tendency is a single, central value that summarizes a set of
concepts and practicing numerical data.
new skills #1
Three Measures of Central Tendency of Ungrouped Data:

Mean- or “average”, is the most used measure of central tendency. It is defined

as the sum of all the data scores divided by the number of scores.

Mean =
∑x where:
N
x= all the data
N= total number of data
For example:
The five players of basketball team have the scores of 10,15,20,10, and 25.
What is mean of scores?

Using the formula:

Mean =
∑x
N
10+15+20+10+25
=
5
80
=
5
Mean= 16
Therefore, the mean score of the five players of the basketball is 16.

Median- it is the middle value.

To find for the median, we need to arrange the data in ascending order (lowest to
highest) or descending order (highest to lowest).

Given the same example:

1. The five players of basketball team have the scores of 10,15,20,10, and
25. What is median of scores?

Arrange the data in order. Then find the middle value.

10, 10, 15, 20, 25

Median = 15

2. Given: 80,80,83,84,85,87,88,89,90,94. What is the median?

Notice that there are 10 data given and already arranged in order. Since the
middle point falls halfway between 85 and 87, so in order to get the median
we need to get the mean of the two values.

85+87
Mean =
2
172
=
2
mean= 86

Mode- it is the value that occurs the most often in the data set.
To find the mode for a set of data just select the value that appears most often.
Always remember, if the given data set doesn’t have a mode, don’t write zero
mode just write no mode.

Given same example in mean and median.

1. The five players of basketball team have the scores of 10,15,20,10, and
25. What is the mode of scores?

Which value appears the most?

Mode = 10

2. Using the same data.

80,80,83,84,85,87,88,89,90,94.
Which value appears the most?

Mode= 80

Note: If there are two modes, it is called bimodal. If there are 3 modes, t is
called trimodal.

E. Discussing new Activity 1: AMAZING RACE TO NUMBERS (20 minutes)

concepts and practicing Direction: Divide the class into 3 groups. Each group should assign two runners. The
new skills #2
runners will run with one foot only and will get to look at the set of data that I have
prepared. The remaining members will write the data in a manila paper. Your task is
to solve for the average grade or mean of each row of grades per subject and find
out the median and mode per column or per quarter. Remember, this is a race so
whichever group finishes first gets plus 10 points.

people. One of the 7 cardinal rules in life, for us to be happy is what others think of
applications of concepts
and skills in daily living us is none of our business. What matters is what we think of ourselves, knowing
that we are always doing the right thing, or we are on the right path.)

In life, who or what do you think is the central tendency?

When do you think is mean, median and mode essential?

H. Making generalizations The teacher will ask the following questions:

What are the three measures of central tendency?
Expected answer: mean, median and mode

What is a mean?
Mean is the most commonly used measure of central tendency; it is the
average of all the data set.

How do you find or compute for the mean?

Using the formula mean =

∑ x , where ∑ x is the sum of all the data
N
and N is number of values in a data set.
and abstractions about
the lesson
What is a median?
Median is the middle value in a data set.

How do get the median of ungrouped data?

To find the median, arrange the data in either decreasing or increasing order
and then find the middle value. If the data set contains even number of values, find
the two central values, then calculate for the mean of the two values.

What is a mode?
The mode is the measure or value which occurs most frequently in a set of data.
It is the value with greatest frequency.

Individual Activity:

Direction: Find the mean, median and mode of the following data given below.
