DAY 1: February 19, 2024

We needed to be at school before 6:30, wearing the proper uniform – a white shirt

and jeans, as instructed for all Electrical Installation Maintenance (EIM) and

Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) students. Before we left, our school principal,

Mr. Peter R. Cannon Jr., provided motivational words and prayers for our safety and

protection. Thanks to the assistance of Mayor Emilda 'EMI' Calixto Rubiano, we

arrived at the Eduardo Duay Calixto training center.

Upon our arrival, the instructors, including the highly skilled welding instructor

Criselda Bantolo and assistant Manny Amboy Bersamin, introduced themselves.

They entrusted us with a critical task centered around HIRAC (Hazard Identification,

Risk Assessment, and Control). Afterward, we embarked on our first activity or

assignment – a 1000-word essay expressing our profound expectations and

lessons about SMAW.

In every word we wrote, our aim was to emphasize the importance of proper

preparation, dedication, and determination in studying our craft. With each

expression of our ideas and dreams, we continuously demonstrate our eagerness

to excel and succeed in the field of welding.

We entered at 8 am, and our initial activity involved studying and exploring the 5

essentials and 5S in welding. The five essentials in welding - correct material,

correct electrode, correct equipment settings, correct technique, and correct safety

measures - are indispensable for achieving quality welds and ensuring the safety

and well-being of personnel. Thanks to the exceptional guidance of our proficient

instructor, Ma'am Criselda Bantolo, and her kind assistant, Sir Manny Amboy

Bersamin, we learned a great deal and applied it to our lesson, with practical

examples to reinforce our understanding. Following the enlightening discussion, we

eagerly embraced our assignment to explore into welding symbols via Google

search. With fervor, we scoured various resources, made discoveries in our

notebooks, and annotated key symbols, their meanings, and applications in welding

practice. Each symbol uncovered added a layer of comprehension, enriching our

knowledge and preparing us for the challenges ahead in our journey to master the

SMAW craft.

By attaching to these principles, we not only attain excellence in our craft but also
