Watching vocabulary
In this video a very short definition about the idioms will be given to the students:
Definition of Idioms: Words or group of words that have a meaning different than
the direct meaning of the words themselves.
Ex: something is a piece of cake – very easy to do.
Learning English is a piece of cake. In here it means that this action is really easy to do not
to eat a cake.
Well, in this lesson, ten very important and useful IDOMS will be taught:
1. To take the bull by the horns – meaning – to deal with a difficult situation.
Ex: I wanted to take the bull by the horns and learn many languages, but it didn’t
work.
2. Horse of a different color – meaning – to be different from other people or things.
Ex: We have a lot of students in our city, but my students are a horse of a different
color.
3. To horse around – meaning – to play / behave in a careless, noisy and silly way.
Ex: hey man, stop horsing around my car, you’ll damage it.
4. To be fishy – meaning – to be suspicious.
Ex: That man asked me several questions, I don’t know why? I think something is
fishy.
5. To pay through the nose – meaning – to pay more than the actual price of sth.
Ex: Don’t take my phone, I paid through the nose for it.
6. To pull someone’s leg – meaning – to tell sth surprising, shocking, worrying or
stressful to someone just to have fun.
Ex: Have you finished your higher education? Or are you pulling your dad’s leg?
7. To shake a leg – meaning – to hurry up.
Ex: You have to finish your class activity in two minutes so, shake a leg.
8. To break a leg – meaning – good luck.
Ex: Are you going to take the TOEFL test? Ok, break a leg!
9. To leave someone high and dry – meaning – to put someone in a difficult situation
and leave them there without helping them.
Ex: Her mother passed away when she was only seven years old then her uncles left
her high and dry.
10. To bend over backwards – meaning – to try really hard to do sth good or to help
someone.
My students are really intelligent and they bend over backwards to learn everything
as quickly as it’s possible.
