Case Study – Activity Analysis 1

Sammy is a female who has played netball for 2 years. She will generally play Goal Attack
and Centre in a game. The games are broken into four quarters which are 15 minutes each.
Her coach has decided to complete an activity analysis on her.
Most games, Sammy is puffed out and tired by the end and is finding that her muscles are
fatigued. On reflection, she says that she struggles the most with games that require more
running, especially when she plays as Centre.

Questions:
a. Describe what an activity analysis is and provide two benefits from completing
one. (3 marks)
An activity analysis is where an athlete undertakes an examination/analysis of their chosen
sport or activity. It is completed to assist with designing a training programme that is specific
to that athlete/sport.
A benefit of completing an activity analysis is that it can provide a range of data and
information that can then be used to tailor a training program for that person.
A second benefit is that you can identify the energy systems, fitness components, movement
patterns or major muscle groups used (only need to identify one of these).
This information can then be used to help find areas of strength or weakness.

b. Using the information above, what are two fitness components that Sammy is
predominantly using in a game of netball. Justify your response using the data
provided. (4 marks)

Can choose two of the following fitness components: muscular power, flexibility, aerobic
power, speed.
An example response (for 2 marks) would be:
Sammy would predominantly use muscular power throughout her game. This is evident as
Sammy is using the muscles in her arms in quick contractions to produce force in order to
pass the ball a total of 37 times.

c. From the data given above, explain two ways Sammy’s coach could use the
information in designing a training program for her. (2 marks)

Need to identify what information is provided such as: fitness components used, energy
systems, work to rest ratio, HR max % etc.
Example response (1 mark) would be:
When designing a training program, Sammy’s coach should focus on improving Sammy's
aerobic power. As Sammy is running/sprinting for a total of 28 minutes, her body is required
to use aerobic power as this requires a fast rate of aerobic ATP produced by the aerobic
energy system.

d. Justify two advantages to completing direct observation for an activity

analysis. (4 marks)

Advantages include: data is collected in real time, inexpensive, limited equipment needed,
immediate changes can be made, easy to conduct.

Example response (for 2 marks) would be:

Using direct observation to complete an activity analysis is advantageous as it is conducted

in real time. This means that the person observing is able to see what is happening then and
there and then does not have to find time at another point to complete the analysis, this can
then lead them to making immediate changes or provide immediate feedback for the player.

e. Based on Sammy’s work to rest ratio, which energy system has she primarily
used? (1 mark)
Aerobic energy system (since her work to rest ratio is 1:1)
