examples/instances of the
new lesson What is constellation?
- The word “constellation” comes from a Latin
word meaning “set of stars”.
- It is a group of stars that form a certain pattern.
- There are 88 known constellations listed by the
International Astronomical Union.
It helps the

track the calendar so they knew when to plant crops and
harvest them.

Ancient – the word ancient is an adjective means

belonging to the very distant past and no longer in
existence ( a long time ago). (English Integration)

Not all the nights we can see all the constellations. There
are different sky patterns that can be seen at particular
times of the year.

Big Dipper ( April-July)

The Big Dipper is one
of the most easily
recognizable asterisms
in the night sky, found
in the constellation
Ursa Major, the Great
Bear. The asterism is
particularly prominent in the northern sky in the summer,
and is one of the first star patterns we learn to identify.

In mythology, The god Zeus hid the nymph Callisto from

his wife Hera by changing her into a bear. Her son,
Actas, did not know she was now a bear and while
hunting one day came across Callisto. To keep Actas
from accidentally killing his mother, Zeus placed them
together into the sky as the Big and Little Bear (we know
them better by the names Big and Little Dipper).
Pegasus (September-December)
Pegasus constellation, the
Winged Horse, is a northern
constellation.

Pegasus, like birds,

angels and most
celestial winged creatures, is allegory for the superior
spiritual power that the hero first sought out to aid him in
his task, and the Owl represents the wisdom side of that
same power.

Pegasus, in Greek mythology, was a winged horse with

magical powers. Pegasus was the one who
delivered Medusa's head to Polydectes, after which he
travelled to Mount Olympus in order to be the bearer of
thunder and lightning for Zeus. Eventually, he became
the horse to Bellerophon, who was asked to kill
the Chimera and succeeded with the help of Athena and
Pegasus.

Scorpius (June-October)

Scorpius is one of
the constellations of the zodiac. Its name
is Latin for scorpion. Scorpius is one of the 48
constellations identified by the Greek astronomer
Ptolemy in the second century.

We have to remember that a century is equal to 100

years, 100x2 = 200 therefore 2nd century is the period
from 101 through 200 in accordance with the Julian
calendar. It is considered part of the Classical era,
historical period.

(Mathematics Integration and AP)

Scorpius in mythology. According to star lore, the
Scorpion’s stinger brought about the death of Orion the
Mighty Hunter. So, when the gods gave the Scorpion
and Orion their final resting places in the high heavens,
they made sure to place the archenemies at opposite
ends of the sky. That’s why you can never see these two
constellations in the same sky together. To this day,
Orion only rises in the east after Scorpius sets in the
southwest, and the reverse in also true: Scorpius won’t
rise in the southeast until Orion’s departure in the west.

Why are some star patterns only visible at a particular

time of the year or at particular places on earth?

D. Discussing new concepts I will group you into three groups. Everybody should
and practicing new skills#1 participate. I will give you 5 minutes to finish your
activities. Choose a representative to present your
output.

Group 1: Connecting the Stars

Mechanics: Connect the stars through lines to form a
pattern that can be seen at particular times of the year.

Group 2: Fix Me!

Mechanics: Identify star patterns that can be seen at
particular times of the year by building the puzzle and
name it.
Group 3: Draw Me!
Mechanics: Draw one star pattern that can be seen at
particular times of the year and identify its name.

Group 4: JUMBLED LETTERS

Mechanics: You will arrange the letter of the star pattern
that can be seen at particular times of the year and put it
to the correct description for it.

1. ONIRO
2. ONSCALLETONIS
3. IGB REPPDI
4. GASPEUS
5. NOIPROCS

Description:
_____1. Also known as the hunter, as it is associated
with one in Greek mythology and it can be seen from
January to April.
_____2. It is a group of stars that form a certain pattern.
_____3. Is one of the most easily recognizable asterisms
in the night sky and it can be seen from April to July.
_____4. It was a winged horse with magical powers and
it can be seen from September to December.
_____5. Is one of the constellations of the zodiac and it
can be seen from June to October.

E. Discussing new concepts Let us have a short game. I have here a basket and we
and practicing new skills#2 will call it a BASKET OF KNOWLEDGE.
Mechanics: The students will pass the basket to their
classmates and when the music stop the student that
holds the basket will read what’s on the basket and they
will answer it.

(the students will

follow the
direction)

F. Developing Mastery leads Directions: Raise the picture of happy star if the
to Formative Assessment statement is correct and sad star if it is not
correct.

1. The big dipper can be seen in April to July.

2. The Pegasus can be seen in January to April. 1.
3. The Scorpion can be seen in June to October. 2.
4. The Orion can be seen in September to 3.
December. 4.
5. Astronomers have identified 89 constellations. 5.

G. Finding Practical Application of What did people do when they look up to the stars and They make a wish.
Concepts and skills in daily living they saw a wishing star?
People believe that
Why did they make a wish? if they saw a star
all their wishes
If wishing stars are true and you see one of them, what
will you do? come true.

What are you going to wish? Why? We will wish that

Very good! You need to ask the guidance of the Lord
and most importantly study hard to achieve your dreams. We have to pray
or wishes. (ESP Integration) and always study
hard.
Some constellations are visible only at certain times of
the year and some are visible throughout the year. What
do you think is the reason behind this?
HOTS Question

The night sky

changes over the
year. The earth
revolves around
the sun, therefore
the stars in the sky
we see in June are
different from the
stars we see in the
sky in December.
As a result, the
night sky changes
constantly.

H. Making Generalizations and What are the different sky patterns that can be seen at Expected Answers:
Abstractions about the lesson particular times of the year. 1. Big Dipper
The student will enumerate the sky patterns. – April to
July
2. Pegasus –
