INTENDED AUDIENCE

Detail 1: European Scholars

Explanation 1:
With the information found in Anotinio Pigafetta's book The First Voyage Around the World, we can consider European
Scholars as one of his intended audiences. With the European scholars in mind, Pigafetta provided an undeniably valuable
historical source for understanding the first circumnavigation of the world led by Ferdinand Magellan during the Age of
Exploration by providing a wealth of information on geography, navigation, ethnography, history, and trade. Considering
scholars might be interested in social and cultural studies, Pigafetta also included insightful information regarding the
people they met during the voyage, namely the Patagonians. "They were savages; They have not got houses and eat meat
entirely raw" are only some of his descriptions regarding one of the indigenous groups they met on their way to Spice
Island, considering this information would be of great interest to scholars.

Detail 2: Navigators and Sailors

Explanation 2:
The audience for Antonio Pigafetta's book may also include navigators and sailors. During that time, there was still a
limited understanding of the world's geography compared to what we know today. Pigafetta stated in his accounts
different and helpful information from geography, navigation, ethnography, and historical data to make it a valuable
reference to the people interested in the field, playing a part in a better understanding of the world. During the voyage,
Pigaffeta recorded the names they visited and explored, names of places like Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, the Strait of
Magellan, Tierra del Fuego, Cape Virgenes, the Mariana Islands, the Philippines, and the Spice Islands (Moluccas). He
must have known that his documentation of place names, discoveries of the expedition, and detailed description of the
lands, islands, and coastlines, with latitude and longitude coordinates and geographical features, would play a crucial role
in enhancing navigational knowledge and aiding safe passage.

Although it is impossible to determine Pigafetta's precise motivations for starting to record the expedition, it is likely that,
like many explorers and chroniclers of his time, he saw value in documenting their journeys in detail.

CONCLUSION:
Which made spices prohibitively expensive….
Antonio Pigafetta’s voyage represents a remarkable moment in the age of exploration. Pigafetta’s detailed accounts and
observations provided significant insights into geography, culture, and history. His documentation allowed us to trace the
torturous voyage faced by the explorers during their circumnavigation of the globe, including the loss of Magellan and
their encounters with various people and cultures, among them the Philippines. It reminds us of the impact of these
encounters on the country’s culture, religion, and identity.
