l THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Parish Youth Ministry and Social development are two strong factors that can have a
major effect on young people's lives.
In Divine Word High School of Dana-lli which is a catholic school, Wherein Catholic
schools include Religion as part of their curriculum and Joining one Youth Ministry
per student is a must. But some students are too shy to express themselves on a larger
group. Therefore, we want to examine the impacts of Youth Ministries to the Senior
High students' Social development in Divine Word High School of Dana-Ili. Parish
youth ministry has the capacity to positively impact young people's lives by giving
them a chance to participate in interesting events, build relationships with their peers,
and become actively engaged in their community.

This research aims to investigate the impacts of joining Parish Youth ministries on the
social development of the Senior high students, exploring how such involvement can
shape their interpersonal skills, sense of belonging, empathy, and overall well-being.
By examining relevant literature, this study seeks insights into the benefits of active
participation in Parish Youth ministries.

Youth ministry, also commonly referred to as youth group, is an age-specific religious

ministry of faith groups or other religious organizations, whose mission is to involve
and engage with young people who attend their places of worship, or who live in their
community (Willondon,2022).

Youth ministry can create a safe space for teens to open up and talk honestly about
their struggles. Be sure to express enthusiasm when students discover or understand
something from your youth group lessons. Youth groups offer young people a unique
opportunity to learn about their talents and abilities through the lens of the church,
while studying the Word of God and theology with their peers. This is not only a
positive Christian quality, but an important life skill (Pam Hutzel,2012).
According to Smith,2018 and Dahl,2016 , Social development Encompasses the
acquisition of skills, knowledge, attitudes, and values necessary for individuals to
interact successfully within society.

Recent studies have highlighted the influences of youth ministry programs on of

Ministry programs on various aspects of social development. These include enhanced

emotional intelligence, improved communication skills, and the formation of

meaningful relationships.
A Research by Johnson and Johnson (2017) emphasizes the role of youth ministries in
developing teamwork, collaboration, and conflict resolution skills. Active
involvement in parish youth ministries provides numerous opportunities for students
to enhance their interpersonal skills and communication abilities.

These skills are vital for establishing and maintaining healthy relationships, resolving
conflicts effectively, and engaging with diverse groups. Joining a parish youth
ministry fosters a sense of belonging and acceptance within a community. It provides
a supportive environment that encourages personal growth, identity formation, and the
development of a strong moral compass. Additionally, being part of a faith-based
community can lead to increased empathy, compassion, and a sense of responsibility
towards others (Dobson 2012; Gore, 2019: Warner, 2014).

Recent studies insist that involvement in parish youth ministries positively affects
psychological well-being. It promotes a sense of purpose, self-esteem, and resilience,
while reducing the likelihood of engaging in risky behaviors. Understanding the
impacts of joining parish youth ministries on the social development of students is
crucial for building an inclusive environment that nurtures personal and relational
growth.

The findings of this research will provide insights for educators, parents, and religious
leaders on the potential benefits and importance of fostering active engagement in
Parish Youth ministry Organizations.

Campus Ministry sustains and animates the faith life of high school students in a way
that dynamically and substantially complements the formation they receive in
theology class, in their parish life and their family life. Drawing on the experience and
sharing of campus ministers across the country, the authors have put together this
survival guide -- a framework of approaches and tips to aid your own survival as
campus ministers. Use this book when you need fresh ideas or a simple starting point.
Each chapter is full of practical tips on the many different facets of Campus Ministry.

Youth need guidance and support as they navigate through the most challenging part
of their development and seek to grow in their walk with Christ. Christ-like leaders
are needed to serve young members of the congregation and help them to reach their
full potential.

Youth ministry leaders must be rooted in a biblical foundation in order effectively

communicate with young people. In addition, they must understand modern
influences on Christianity, which allow them to identify with youth and build
meaningful relationships with them.

Youth ministry is more than programs and events. It is “the response of the Christian
community to the needs of young people, and the sharing of the unique gifts of youth
with the larger community.” (A Vision of Youth Ministry, p. 6, quoted in RTV 1). To
be most effective, this is a ministry to, with, by, and for young people that involves
their families, their parish community, and the larger community. At the heart of
ministry with young people is the presence of caring, supportive relationships where
youth experience the Good News in the flesh.
Pope Francis declared that this synod would focus on young people, ages 16-29. The
pope declared, "I want you Tyoung people] to be the center of attention because you
are in my heart".

As a result of the 2018 synod on young people, the very first papal Apostolic
Exhortation (book)-promulgated on 25 March 2019, and titled Christus Vivit! (Christ
is Alive!)-came to fruition. It is the first time a sitting pope has written a specific
document on young people. Such a historic and bold move by Pope Francis laid the
groundwork for national Catholic churches (individual countries, e.g.. United States,
Brazil, Australia, Poland, etc.) to address youth and young adult ministry, and
eventually to write their own documents on young people. It is because of Pope
Francis' initiative that this special issue on Catholic youth and young adult ministry is
so relevant and current.
The timely nature of this special issue serves to amplify voices in the field of Catholic
youth and young adult ministry. This journal will be an important contribution to
Catholic youth and young adult ministry literature on both pastoral and academic
Levels for years to Catholic courses come. Moreover, this journal will be used in on
youth or young adult ministry as required reading for years to come. The articles
provide insight, theology, and pastoral practice for those who educate and train
current and future youth and young adult ministers and those who work in the

trenches of youth and young adult ministry. This special issue will be of specific
interest to pastors, teachers, youth ministers, campus ministers, young adult ministers,
specialized ministers of adolescents and teenagers, conformation coordinators, middle
school youth workers, and diocesan directors of youth and young adult ministry.

According to a Book, “Toward a contemporary understanding of youth ministry as a

descriptive agency” by Garth Aziz ,2019,Youth ministry within an evangelical
protestant epistemology has predominantly been evangelistic, with the aim of
reaching and proselytizing unchurched youth and youth who do not have a personal
and confessed relationship with Jesus Christ. Youth ministry, however, since its
inception until the contemporary context of the 21st century, has gone through many
challenges and transformations. The historical challenges of the youth ministry have
birthed many developments to address the ever-increasing need of the adolescent
world both globally and within South Africa.

Youth ministry can no longer only be interested in the spiritual condition of the youth;
instead, youth ministry should be an agency in the lived realities and experiences of
the youth. The aim of the article is to argue that the efficacy of youth ministry in a
contemporary society depends on its function as a descriptive agency that is informed
by its mission, which is primarily ministry.

According to Baker Books, 2010, For more than two centuries, youth ministries have
either strengthened teenagers after a special encounter with God or tried to retain
them until such a moment when God shows up. Here veteran youth ministry expert
Mark Senter provides the first substantial history of the phenomenon of American
Protestant youth ministry. More than a history, this book highlights the evolution of
adolescence and adolescent spirituality, outlines three distinct cycles in the history of
youth ministry, describes the major shapers of youth ministry over the last century,
and helps readers understand trends and changes in youth ministry and their
connections to broader church life.

(Books,2010), Youth ministry has all it needs to continue to push the church to care
about and serve the needs of the young in God's name, except for one thing we have a
long way to go to develop a rich, broad, and diverse conversation that frames, defines,
and grounds our missional call.

Schools must prepare leaders to translate this faithfulness into effective action. This is
precisely what those of us who are called to engage the church in theological
reflection of contemporary youth and family issues must do develop a practical
theology that takes seriously the reality of the context we are in, regard- less of how
and where it takes us. This is the future of youth and family ministry in the church.

A field Guide Book to the Wild life of Youth Ministry (Harper Collins,2014), that a
Youth Ministry is quite an idea so much bigger than two words. One part odyssey,
one part call, one part mission, and one part quest, youth ministry calls us into places
of breathless exhilaration, stunning beauty, genuine peril, and unknown discovery.

This is not terrain for the faint of heart. But it is a landscape of grace and wonder.
This Way to Youth Ministry is the most complete academic text for those who might
be called to such a journey. Thirty-year youth ministry veteran Duffy Robbins
explores the theology, theory, and practice of youth ministry and helps you discover
how to: Identify your calling to ministry Cultivate the traits and training that make a
good youth pastor Set boundaries and maintain priorities Understand the spiritual,
emotional, mental, and physical development on adolescents Navigate youth culture
and postmodernism Understand youth ministry in relation to the rest of the Church
Develop a team of volunteers who will walk the journey with you Develop and apply
a personalized ministry philosophy With just the right mix of theory and application,
this extensive academic text shows you both the big picture and the close-up details of
making ministry work. Whether your journey is just beginning or well under way,
This Way to Youth Ministry is the book that will help with everything that lies ahead.

Relational youth ministry, also known as incarnational ministry, can feel like a
vicious cycle of guilt:" I should be spending time with kids, but I just don't want to."
The burden becomes heavy to bear because it is never over; adolescents always seem
to need more relational bonds, and once one group graduates there is a new group of
adolescents who need relational contact. It may be that the reason these relationships
have become burdensome is that they have become something youth workers do,
rather than something that youth workers enter into. In Revisiting Relational Youth
Ministry, Andrew Root explores the origins of a dominant ministry model for
evangelicals, showing how American culture has influenced our understanding of the
incarnation. Drawing from Dietrich Bonhoeffer, whose work with German youth in
troubled times shaped his own understanding of how Jesus intersects our
relationships, Root recasts relational ministry as an opportunity not to influence the
influencers but to stand with and for those in need. True relational youth ministry
shaped by the incarnation is a commitment to enter into the suffering of all, to offer
all those in high school or junior high the solidarity of the church. (Andrew Root,
2007).

Religiosity has a profound role and influence on youth development within a

community. Religiosity promotes risk reduction and positive moral characteristics and
thus remains an avenue of opportunity for transformation in considering the lived
experiences of vulnerable young people living on the Cape Flats in the Western Cape,
South Africa. The Cape Flats is an area that is overwhelmed with unemployment,
poverty, gang violence, chemical substance abuse and a general societal abandonment
of young people. It is out of dire hopelessness that a meaningful relationship with God
can be experienced by youth. The Cape Flats is, therefore, a fertile space for an
intervention of religiosity.

This article will research how the agency of youth ministry as a positive youth
development can assist in youth development within a community in tension like that
of the Cape Flats. While youth development is a broad category for consideration and
research, this article will primarily focus on identity formation of young people, in
particular, the vulnerable youth living on the Cape Flats. Intradisciplinary and/or

interdisciplinary implications: The agency of youth ministry, in an evangelical

epistemology, should seek to address the influencers on adolescent identity formation,
as one’s identity has a direct bearing on faith formation. The potential outcome of the
article would allow the youth ministry to take serious the impact of the lived realities
of youth and adjust their programmatic designs and outcomes, in relation to youth
faith formation.
