CHAPTER I: THE PROBLEM

Introduction

The rise of the Internet has become a part of the society. It is difficult

to understand that a young man would not check for updates on social

media networks once a day. At this generation, social media influencers

are quite popular among students and have a significant influence on

education sustainability. Social media influencers can create levels of peer

pressure that are beyond anything their parents could imagine. It is like

being bombarded with information about how to dress, what songs to listen

to, and what brands to like. Moreover, in time, most of the social media

influencers divert students’ attention away from educational topics and

waste their time on other non-educational topics and entering into the

world of social media.

At present, the 21st century is said to be the century where a massive

number of technologies has been developed. Later, as the 21st century

arrives, social media and technologies widen their platforms, developing

social media influencers, these influencers are a big part of the Information

network. These influencers are known for informing their followers of new

products, new developments, and even breaking the news. As it widens its

influence, the wider and more advanced digital technology spreads. As the

digital world advances, it reaches many individuals such as seniors, adults,

young adults, and children. This includes Students of different ages under

its influence. Most students as well have enlisted in different Social Media

platforms where social media influencers have expanded, which engage

students to watch their content. Foremost, students schedules are cut up,

dividing their time which was deliberated their academics performances

affected. Leading ninety percent of teens ages 13-17 under the impacts

of social media.

Last decade, the online media fill quickly with insignificance. As per the

report in January 2019 on "We Are Social", there are 3.484 billion

individuals who effectively utilize online media - that is 45% of the total

populace. Influencers in online media are individuals who have gained

notoriety for their insight and mastery on a particular theme. They make

customary posts concerning that point on their favored web-based media

channels and create huge followings of energetic, drawing in individuals

who give close consideration to their views. Inevitably this 45% of the total

populace admire powerhouses in web-based media to direct them which

influence their dynamic in their lives. Therefore, clients of informal

communities, by and large, are a delegate of the more youthful age.

As indicated by researchers, interpersonal organizations are

particularly risky for teens, as they structure a bogus impression that

affection and fellowship are not difficult to vanquish and similarly as simple

to annihilate. Moreover, for youngsters who are familiar with the quick

transfer of Internet life, reality might give off an impression of being

exorbitantly dull, and they can have a go at it, making it difficult to "re-

establish" it by making indiscreet activities. Some are allies of the

utilization of online media. They guarantee that the last give admittance to

information and assist the youth with trading data rapidly. Others believe

that students' utilization of web-based media principally conveys about

everything except for studies and that they just divert understudies from

the learning system. The utilization of online media by students assists

with approaching essential data as speedy as could be expected

In line with the researchers’ analysis entitled “Compare and Contrast:

conduct this study to become aware of the impact of the use of social

media to the educational overall performance of the students and be able

to draw guidelines that can enhance the learning process while following

their favorite influencers and decrease the terrible effect of some social

media influencers. As students become involved in the field of Science,

Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, the researchers are grateful to

study the impact of influencers on students’ academic performances by

implementing necessary data and recommendations that may be applied

to improve their academic performances and following their favorite

influencers at the same time. In the final analysis, the researchers will

recommend the possible ways and strategies on how to motivate the

students to improve their academic performance while following the

influencers.

In this study the researchers conducted three major questions that

wanted to clarify regarding to the said topic;

1. What is the level of influence instilled by social media influencers to

STEM students?

2. What is the relationship of the level of influence of social media

influencers to STEM students’ academic performance?

3. How long does an average student spend their time on social media

to watch those influencers they stan?

4. Based on the results of the study, what are the possible ways to

maintain a student excellency academic performance while following

the influence of the social media influencers?

Scope, Limitations and Delimitations

The fundamental goal of this study is to identify and examine the

different levels of influence instilled by the social media influencers and

their relationship to the students’ academic performances. Through this

study, we would be able to present ways on how to motivate the students

in terms of their academic performances while following the advice of the

influencers.

The researchers conducted this study to assist the students in

improving their academic goals while adhering to the recommendations of

the influencers. The study covers the levels of influences and their

connection to the students’ academic performances. The STEM students

of Holy Trinity School of Padre Garcia Batangas, would be the subject of

the research. This study is chosen respondents are 57 students from Stem

11 and 36 students from Stem 12 of Holy Trinity School of Padre Garcia

Bats. For this matter, the researchers used effective and critical analysis

to assess the responses of the respondents to reach the best and most

accurate conclusion.

Nevertheless, two major limitations could be confronted in future

studies. First, the respondents of this study are only limited to the STEM

students of Padre Garcia Bats. The respondents are chosen according to

the title of this research. Second, the research is only limited to the

difference in the level of influences given by the influencers and its

relationship to the students’ academic performances. Its main aim is to

know how the social media influencers greatly affect the students in terms

of academic performances.

This study focuses on the level of influences instilled by the

influencers to the students. The purpose of this research is to motivate the

students on their academic performance. The study will be responded to

by the STEM students of Holy Trinity School of Padre Garcia Bats and it

doesn’t include the different strands such as the ABM, HUMSS, and also

adults. Social Media plays a crucial role in connecting people and

developing relationships, not only with key influencers and journalists

covering the company sector, but also provides a great opportunity to

establish customer service by gathering input, answering questions and

listening to their feedback. Social media influencers are an important part

of this information network. They inform their followers of new products,

new developments, and even breaking the news. Unlike advertisements

that are designed to inform, the information that comes from individual

influencers is organic and trusted. This research does not include the

advantages and disadvantages of social media and the changes in

behavior, mental health, and lifestyle of the respondents. Also, it does not

include how influencers advertise their brands to youth and marketing. The

researchers do not intend for the influencers to change their content.

CHAPTER II: REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Conceptual Literature
10
HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL
of Padre Garcia, Bats., Inc.
Senior High School

This part of literature contains literature coming from books, journalism,

and other forms of material, concerning or relevant to the study, but are

data-free or non-empirical material, coming from both foreign and local

sources. It represents hope to discover through examination. It

characterizes the pertinent factors for review and guides out how they may

identify with one another.

In an article entitled, “Understanding student perception and motivation

towards academic blogs: An exploratory study”, Yuen (2011) proposed a

framework for the educational affordances of blogs which included both

individual and social dimensions. However, the educational affordances of

technology are not a set of fixed attributes rather describe the relationship

between the properties of educational technology and the characteristics of

the learners who house it. Therefore, the successful use of blogs is also

contingent on learner-related contextual factors. Furthermore, through the

uses and gratifications perspective, related with the study of Hollenbaugh,

it examined the motives for writing personal journal blogs using data

collected from nearly 300 active bloggers. The leading motives for blogging

were, to record/organize thoughts and feelings, share information to help

or inform others, keep social connections, and seek feedback from others.

As Melanie Conroy (2013) mentioned in her book entitled “iDisorder:

Understanding our Obsession with Technology and Overcoming its Hold

on Us”, it is most likely information to nobody that there are huge contrasts

in mentalities towards innovations between ages. The more youthful ages

trust themselves to be invulnerable to the adverse consequences of

innovation. Their most predictable suggestion is mindfulness of what the

students find diverting, whether that is the Internet or Facebook or envy

reproduced from taking a gander at photographs online just as removing

time from innovation. All things considered, what iDisorder demonstrates is

that ages from the Millennials to the Baby-Boomers are in danger to

concentrate on propensities and temperament unsettling influences when

they depend a lot on correspondence advances.

In an article written by Jen Fahey (2021) entitled, “Social Media

Influencers and Their Impact”, influencers can pile up a huge number of

adherents who feel as though they have a relationship with the person.

There are even forces to be reckoned with who permit individuals to join a

restrictive inward circle of "dear companions" on Instagram for a month-to-

month charge. The adherent then, at that point approaches more personal

posts and subtleties of the influencers’ life. On account of the trust that has
12

been set up, when an influencer advances an item or administration, it

won't generally be not difficult to perceive that this is a showcasing effort.

These students can go through hours occupied with these missions;

remarking, preferring, and associating with individuals who are paid by

brands to drive deals. Furthermore, as the prominence and achievement of

paid online media forces to be reckoned with builds, supporters frequently

need what the influencers have as well as a need to be them.

The article conducted by Veirman et al. (2019) with the title of “What Is

Influencer Marketing and How Does It Target Children? A Review and

Direction for Future Research”, stated the fact that students these days

spend numerous hours on the internet watching YouTube recordings in

which their number one blogger are messing around, unpacking toys,

investigating items, making jokes or simply approaching their day-by-day

exercises. These bloggers routinely post alluring and engaging substance

in the desire for building an enormous adherent base. Although a

considerable lot of these bloggers are grown-ups, the quantity of youngster

bloggers is thriving. Meanwhile, a new Pew Research Center survey of

U.S. adults finds that these users are turning to YouTube for much more

than entertainment. Generally, 50% of YouTube clients say the stage is

13
HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL
of Padre Garcia, Bats., Inc.

vital for assisting them with sorting out some way to do things they've

never done. The discoveries likewise feature YouTube critical job in giving

substance to youngsters. Completely 81% of all guardians with kids age 11

or more youthful say they at any point let their kid watch recordings on

YouTube.

As expressed by Chambers et al. (2018), social media don't just stand

out for minors, the youngster crowds additionally seek to become forces to

be reckoned with them. A few youngsters for sure figured out how to

fabricate a huge crowd of devotees or endorsers on their media channels,

which are frequently run by their folks. They generally keep up with

different web-based media accounts, with Instagram, TikTok, and

YouTube as the main ones on which they post engaging and motivating

content. There are even various exceptionally little youngster influencers or

"kidfluencers," who post an assortment of recordings on YouTube,

including toy surveys, fun difficulties and instructional exercises [e.g.,

EvanTubeHD (age 13); Ryan's World (age 7)], or who keep a fruitful

Instagram channel [e.g., Call Me Sparkle (age 5); Zoooey in the City (age

7)]. Dissimilar to, for example, kid entertainers, the social media doesn't
14

of Padre Garcia, Bats., Inc.

claim to play and mess around with toys, he/she truly does, expanding

their appeal to the crowd and obscuring any influential or selling aim.

Social Media Influencers and the Use of the Modern Technology

In agreement with Djafarova & Rushworth (2017), social influencers,

also called “micro-influencers” or “digital celebrities” are influential non-

traditional celebrities who have become famous through social media.

Companies are increasingly turning to micro-celebrities to endorse their

products. However, there are concerns about this source of information

self-presentation and credibility on the internet. It seeks to develop an

extended source credibility framework that is applicable to the online

context. Users believe micro-celebrities are credible if they meet certain

requirements for online behaviour and self-presentation, as shown in the

findings.

The statement is also supported by Khamis et al., (2017), whereas more

traditional celebrities include musicians, movie stars, or TV personalities,

social influencers use social media channels for blogging or blogging about

their lives, building a large fan base, and attaining celebrity status. Social

influencers use social media for self-branding while striving to build a

15
HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL
of Padre Garcia, Bats., Inc.
Senior High School

specific public identity focused on a target audience. Central to their self-

branding strategy is constructing an authentic personal brand centring on a

sense of genuineness and intimacy.

In line with Kahle and Homer et al. (2011), the meaning of the source as

the sender of the object of information has been particularly seen in

correspondence and advance writing. Besides, the real appearance or

connection with nature of the source accepts a huge part in the endorsers'

legitimacy and, along these lines, impact. Even among young people,

using engaging companion models has been shown to grow publicizing

feasibility.

As shown by Vermeir et al., (2016), source claim is driven by parts like

evident closeness, shared trait, and appropriateness of the source. Shared

characteristic implies how much one knows the source through

transparency; friendliness is portrayed as adoration for the source as a

result of the source is genuine appearance and lead, while resemblance is

the supposed comparability between the source and authority of the

message. Sources that are known to, cherished by, or possibly like the

purchaser are seen to be charming and, in like manner, are incredible.

Additionally, these source factors add to customers' relationship with the

16
HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL
of Padre Garcia, Bats., Inc.
Senior High School

source, which further develops the likelihood they will take on their

feelings, mind sets, and practices.

In the same manner, brands may make or allow an individual or pay an

endorser or agent to affect clients' point of view and purchase points.

Source legitimacy contains two estimations: unwavering quality and

expertise. Dependability suggests the validity, adequacy, and significant

nature of the endorser, while fitness implies the endorsers capacity, data,

and capacities (Hovland et al., 2011). Both trustworthiness and expertise

have been found to further develop publicizing suitability. For sure, even

among kids, using charming partner models has been shown to increase

publicizing feasibility

Study Habits of the Students while Coping Up in the Modern

Technology

As what Roblyer et al., (2011) mentioned that over the previous decade,

online interpersonal interaction destinations, for example, Facebook and

Twitter are one of the interchange advances that have been generally

embraced by understudies. Instructive specialists have likewise taken on

long range informal communication apparatuses to internet learning

17

networks for their course plan and conveyance. Interfacing versatile

figuring out how to web-based media locales, students can get the

fundamental logical data from different clients. Informal communication

innovations and media can cultivate collaboration and correspondence

among understudies and educators, since understudies might have

restricted time to fabricate an encouraging group of people with their

companions on the web or versatile learning conditions.

As stated by Baird and Fisher (2011), the "connect" via online media

has a significant influence in students` inspiration, maintenance, and

learning in conveyed learning conditions. Albeit web-based media and on

the web/portable learning are forming instructive innovation, little

consideration has been paid to explore the web-based media messages

identified with on the web or versatile learning. By mining these messages,

we might discover bits of knowledge in the public insight about on the web

and portable learning and reaction to upgrade members' e-learning

experience. The proportion of notice and the proportion of web-based

media were utilized in this review to recognize 210 the influencers on the

subjects of web-based learning and versatile learning, in light of the fact

that the clients with the best quantities of notices and retweets
18
HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL
of Padre Garcia, Bats., Inc.
Senior High School

demonstrate that their posts are trailed by an enormous number of

intrigued and drew in fans.

As expressed by Shen and Kuo (2015), knowing the web-based media

influencers is essential to instructive professionals, since they assemble

associations with the forces to be reckoned with to proactively use web-

based media to advance internet learning or portable learning courses.

Moreover, it broke down the patterns of internet learning and versatile

learning by the accompanying viewpoints: the enlightening measurements

of the online media influencers, the month to month and hourly line

diagrams and the volume patterns. These points of view can give

instructive experts distinctive methods of comprehension and clarifying the

general assessments toward internet learning and versatile learning.

Social Media Influencers Impact to the Students’ Academic

Performances

According to Boateng et al. (2016), in the present social world, online

media is quickly changing the correspondence climate in light of the diary.

Social media applications can reinforce class material and emphatically

impact conversations, cooperative work, and writing. Teachers and

19
HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL
of Padre Garcia, Bats., Inc.
Senior High School

specialists are continually exploring different avenues regarding online

media advancements wanting to animate basic reasoning abilities,

coordinated effort, and information development. In any case, the way that

these media are by and large open to the world suggests a need to

painstakingly think about its advantages, effects and dangers of

transparency just as need for progressing correspondence with students to

address their interests and manage issues in the utilization of online media

as they emerge.

In the article associated with Boateng (2016), entitled “The Impact of

Social Media on Student Academic Life in Higher Education”, online media

gives students another instrument to a recognizable exercise. It gives

students an immediate medium by which to openly assess and remark on

their grounds, surroundings, institutional strategies, classes, educators,

and organization, and individual understudies continuously. It also states

that social media hurdles through grounds are almost inconspicuous,

hauling behind it the heavyweight of social treacheries and muddled

jurisprudence gathered from many years of understudy discourse. Given

web-based medias potential for positive effect, nobody is proposing to pull

20
HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL
of Padre Garcia, Bats., Inc.
Senior High School

the brakes on it, and from multiple points of view, the innovation is as of

now beyond out of control.

According to Dewing, (2011), the present understudies convey by

means of innovation by saying definitely no Facebook or messaging, are

removing a significant relationship with students' innovation as an online

educator utilizes innovation through the utilization of an assortment of

instruments like Skype, message, email, Facebook, and Twitter. Web-

based media opens up new ways for cooperation and conversation as it

offers a lot of content posting, replicating, sharing, and accessibility by

effectively utilizing on the web search instruments. Students today utilize

web-based media anyplace and whenever where web association is free

to meet their instructive requirements.

As expressed by Gurman (2015) in his article that, regarding the

matter of the quantity of protests of improper contact including web-based

media, the potential dangers are excessively extraordinary. Understudies’

participating in a private relationship outside the homeroom circle asks for

unseemly conduct to initiate. There is the probability of clients not being

considerate and conscious of others to such an extent that foulness,

indecency, profanity, or language that is bothering, disdainful, or in any

21
HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL
of Padre Garcia, Bats., Inc.
Senior High School

case improper for the school climate some of the time courses in these

stages. This thus could cause students to yield that they have no right or

assumption for protection concerning their utilization of school innovation

and along these lines would not have any desire to take an interest

completely. There is consistently the potential for things to turn out badly,

and that is valid before innovation too. So, reporters would need to quit

agonizing over what could turn out badly and understand that there is a

colossal chance related with web-based media that widen the learning

experience of students.

In the article stated by Croes et al., (2020) entitled “Young adults’

motivations for following social influencers and their relationship to

identification and buying behavior”, shows that they've been explored the

inspirations of youthful grown-ups have for following social forces to be

reckoned with, investigated social distinguishing proof as a potential basic

instrument in the connection to these inspirations and youthful grown-ups'.

Moreover, the discoveries showed that the significance of the inspirations

for following forces to be reckoned with varied between age gatherings,

sexes and instructive foundations. At last, social distinguishing proof

assumed a significant part in the connection between students' inspiration

22
HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL
of Padre Garcia, Bats., Inc.

while being impacted by the media work force. As youthful grown-ups

invest expanding measures of energy via web-based media following

social influencers, it is fundamental to comprehend why they follow these

forces to be reckoned with and what satisfactions they get.

Research Literature

A compilation of unpublished information or documents on a specific

field of study or subject is referred to as research literature. It contains the

most important sources on the major controversies, patterns, and

discrepancies in the field of study.

Based on the study conducted by Sonia Santovenia-Casal et al., (2019),

students who partook in an online media-based action introduced

preferable scholarly execution over the individuals who didn't do any

movement or who participated in a more conventional learning action.

They presumed that by paying little mind to the instruction level, online

media corporations apply a positive impact on execution. Subsequently,

consider the variable of long-range informal communication site use since

this can to some extent clarify scholastic execution. They additionally

tracked down that the organizations created during the course didn't
23
HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL
of Padre Garcia, Bats., Inc.
Senior High School

comprise stable networks of training. Their primary suggestion is that three

phases of guidance ought to be viewed as when planning a course

dependent via online media investment: novices, moderate, and expert.

According to the study of Hashem (2015), among the more youthful

age, the time they spend via web-based media, what she calls 'diversion

media' is "over two times the normal measure of time spent in school every

year." Rideout, (2012) She likewise adds that an American kid spends on

normal seven and a half hours daily having a good time on the media, yet

they perform multiple tasks, between every one of the various media they

use. For instance, they can be paying attention to music, sending a tweet,

and furthermore posting on Facebook. Rideout says, that since online

media is seven days seven days, in contrast to school or living it up work,

throughout the long term the measure of time one could spend over the

web "has detonated"

In accordance with the study of Yousra et al., (2012), they have

discovered that utilizing YouTube recordings made by influencers urges

students to search for comparative recordings, and start utilizing YouTube

as an instructive asset. The main test is the assessment of the

dependability of the substance; therefore, content choice must be finished

24
HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL
of Padre Garcia, Bats., Inc.
Senior High School

by the teacher. In conclusion, YouTube recordings have been a valuable

wellspring of instructive substance, it is a free online device, and the effect

has been significantly dependent on review on students' presentation.

Teachers and forces to be reckoned with have utilized YouTube recordings

in different fields, for example, nursing in and have demonstrated to be a

compelling device to upgrade students' learning and commitment.

Additionally, enlightened with the review led by Muir (2021), YouTube

was for some time seen by individuals as a shelter for moving music

recordings and a realm for excellence bloggers and expert wellness

mentors. Presently, this biggest video real time stage is more than a

diversion as it is a truly outstanding and most well-known wellspring of

instructive video content. Present day instructors and educators make

scholastic recordings and transfer them on their channels so understudies

can without much of a stretch access the necessary scholarly material and

data without any problem. Some of them likewise purchase YouTube

endorsers to develop their channels and command the notice of more

understudies to watch their videos. The instructive force to be reckoned

with utilization of video content serves to help students, yet in addition

25
HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL
of Padre Garcia, Bats., Inc.
Senior High School

educators, their instructive organizations, and the whole training

framework.

As expressed in "The Connection Between TikTok and Students'

Academic Performance"(2020), while it may not appear so from initial

feelings, TikTok is a great video stage for education. Many online

influencers presently utilize this stage to share instructive, business and

professional illustrations. It is not simply all senseless recordings

highlighting the number one VIPs. On the off chance that dig further into

the stage, it will discover incredible TikTok thoughts to assist with school

composing assignments. As talked about above, TikTok is an extraordinary

device for training, in any case, when utilized during concentrate on

schedule, it tends to be a colossal interruption. Utilizing telephone while in

school is normally debilitating, and web-based media applications redirect

consideration from the current model. It is unbelievably baffling for

instructors these days to need to compete with telephones, when they are

making an honest effort to draw in the class.

As reported by Boerman and Reijmersdal (2020), “Watching online

videos is becoming an important part of children media diets. Children

particularly like content that is specifically created for YouTube-by-

26
HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL
of Padre Garcia, Bats., Inc.
Senior High School

YouTube personalities. Because these personalities have a large reach

and are considered likeable and credible, they have become social media

influencers.” In conformity with their statement, they also stated that these

influencers are interesting channels to reach the youth therefore, they

persuade the youth to watch their videos which are mostly influencers

often embed persuasive sponsored messages in their videos to earn

money.

As stated by Folkvord et al., (2019), nowadays, the majority of

children between 8 and 11 years old prefer to watch content on YouTube

rather than watching TV programs on a TV set namely, Ofcom, 2018.

Children particularly like content that is specifically created for YouTube-

by-YouTube personalities such as bloggers. The YouTube content children

consume varies from videos of daily lives (the so-called video blogs or

vlogs), to pranks, people playing video games, unboxing products, product

reviews, and people showcasing their musical talents. The YouTubers who

create this content can become very popular and build large communities

with occasionally millions of followers and subscribers. Their large network,

the popularity of their content, and the fact that children consider

YouTubers as likeable, credible, and inspirational characters have made

27
HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL
of Padre Garcia, Bats., Inc.
Senior High School

them interesting spokespersons for advertisers. Hence, YouTubers have

become important social media influencers that can reach a young

audience.

In line with Jefrey Fahey (2021), influencers can rack up millions of

followers who feel as if they have a relationship with the individual. There

are even influencers who allow people to join an exclusive inner circle of

“close friends” on Instagram for a monthly fee. The follower then has

access to more intimate posts and details of the influencers’ life. Because

of the trust that has been established, when an influencer promotes a

product or service, it will not always be easy to recognize that this is a

marketing campaign. The students can spend hours engaged in these

campaigns; commenting, liking, and connecting with people who are paid

by brands to drive sales. And as the popularity and success of paid social

media influencers increases, followers are often not only wanting what the

influencers have but also wanting to be them.

(2019) social media is known for being a web-based service in which

it gives every individual an opportunity to create and publish either a

public or a private profile inside the bounded system yet, most

individuals are questioning whether social media can have a positive

influence on the student education or is social media only

detrimental? Unquestionably, student users on social media are

expanding popularity and the passion for the social media can

neither be disadvantageous or advantageous in education if it is

used correctly.

Conceptual Framework

The diagram beneath is the reasonable worldview utilized in this

investigation. It essentially expects to know the impact of social media

influencers to students’ academic performances. This part of the research

illustrates what to expect to find through research. It defines the relevant

variables for the study and maps out how they might relate to each other.

To accomplish this specific objective, the researchers built up a theoretical

system which fills in as a guide in their study.

Electronic innovation, with its remarkable openness and intuitiveness,

has been progressively used to improve showing practice and learning

encounters. The achievement of scholarly web journals relies upon the

cooperation and commitment of students. The continuing progress of the

modern technology never failed us to move forward. As time goes by, until

the technology gave birth on social media, it became part in daily lives to

proclaim about opinions and issues encountered every day.

Conforming to the article associated with Boateng (2016), entitled

“The Impact of Social Media on Student Academic Life in Higher

Education”, online media gives students another instrument to a

recognizable exercise. For this matter, it gives students an immediate

medium by which to openly assess and remark on their grounds,

surroundings, institutional strategies, classes, educators, and organization,

and individual understudies continuously. Given web-based media

potential for positive effect, nobody is proposing to pull the brakes on it,

and from multiple points of view, the innovation is as of now beyond the

control.

In order to come up with their aimed output, the researchers

gathered necessary information from trusted websites in the internet world.

Here, the researchers found out the various impacts of social media

influencers among students’ academic performances. In the course of the

32
HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL
of Padre Garcia, Bats., Inc.

last decade, the online media fill quickly with insignificance. As per the

report in January 2019 on "We Are Social", there are 3.484 billion

individuals who effectively utilize online media - that is 45% of the total

populace. Thus, social media are increasingly visible in higher education

settings as instructors look to the related technology to promote active

learning for students as well as mediate and enhance their instruction

As stated in chapter II which is the Review of Related Literature,

social influencers, also known to be called as “micro-influencers” or “digital

celebrities” are influential non-traditional celebrities who have become

famous through social media. Companies are increasingly turning to micro-

celebrities to endorse their products. However, there are concerns about

this source of information of self-presentation and credibility on the

internet. It seeks to develop an extended source credibility framework that

is applicable to the online context.

Considering the same purposes which is to compare and contrast the

level of influence given by the social media influencers to the youths’

academic performances, students who partook in an online media-based

action introduced preferable scholarly execution over the individuals who

didn't do any movement or who participated in a more conventional

learning action. They presumed that by paying little mind to the instruction

level, online media corporations apply a positive impact on execution. This

fact paved way for the researchers to ask the impact of social influencers

to the students’ academic performances.

To answer these circumstances, the researchers constructed, asked

for validation and administered survey questionnaires to advisers of STEM

senior high school students of Holy Trinity School of Padre Garcia

Batangas.

The researchers, likewise, aim to provide an action plan which will

serve as an answer that provides a different perspective from the analysis

of social media trends and influencers on the topics of online learning and

mobile learning. Educational practitioners should build strong connections

with the influencers and monitor their social media activities. This action

plan will be the output of the researchers.

CHAPTER III: RESEARCH METHOD AND PROCEDURES

This chapter contains the research design, subjects of the study, data

gathering instruments and procedures, and data analysis. As described by

Piedra (2019), this section contains the specific techniques used to

identify, process, and analyze information about the topic and allows the

reader to critically examine the overall validity and reliability of the study.

Research Design

As expressed by Nassaji (2015), descriptive research is the

examination plan in which information is gathered in a subjective way and

investigated utilizing quantitative methodology. Descriptive research

alludes to the logical philosophy wherein perception of the examined

populace is completed in its regular encompassing. In contrast to

experimental research, the researchers do not control or modify any of the

factors; instead, the researchers just observe and measure them.

Moreover, this strategy includes gathering information to respond to and

clarify the questions concerning the reviews’ subject.

42
HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL

Subject of the Study

This study focuses on those who spend time observing social media

influencers. In accordance with this, the researchers would investigate a

total of 93 respondents from Holy Trinity School of Padre Garcia, Batangas

Inc. STEM students. The researchers have chosen this set of respondents

because they are more likely to be interested in following and emulating

the opinions and recommendations of social media influencers.

Data Gathering Instrument

During the survey, even more unequivocally, fitting instruments were

used meanwhile. Useful data gathering was portrayed through how the

instruments were created, endorsed, oversaw, recuperated, and scored.

The instruments that were used to procure data are the hard copy of the

researchers’ prepared survey questionnaires.

Survey Questionnaire

Questionnaire surveys are a technique for gathering statistical

information about the attributes, attitudes, or actions of a population by a

structured set of questions. The survey questionnaire is about the impact

43
HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL
of Padre Garcia, Bats., Inc.
Senior High School

of social media influencers on the students and to their academic

performance. Also, how students allocate their time to the influencers and

the possible way to improve their academic performance.

Construction of the questionnaires. The researchers look through the

web for additional information about the relationship of the influencers to

the students’ academic performance. The researchers would like to

explore the influencers relationship on students and will that relationship

change students’ academic performance. Also, researchers explore how

many hours students allocate on their favorite influencers and what will be

the solution to make their academic performance better. The draft was

shipped off the exploration guide, Ms. Queen Marygold B. Loisaga, for

specific comments and recommendations; she organized the copies of the

letter of request for the experts as instrument validators.

Validation of the questionnaires. Subsequent to making their survey,

the specialists passed a duplicate of it to their exploration consultant. It

went through approval and assessment. The research adviser checked for

the development of thoughts and words just as linguistic blunders. The

44
HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL
of Padre Garcia, Bats., Inc.

approval of the study poll was utilized primarily in acquiring information for

the review.

Administration of the questionnaires. The duplicates of the survey and

test are circulated in a hard copy structure and distributed to the

respondents. The analysts disclosed how to answer the survey. The

surveys were circulated to ninety-two individuals of Senior High School

STEM students in Holy Trinity School of Padre Garcia Batangas who

participated on how the social media influencers affect their academic

performance.

Retrieval of the questionnaires. After the respondents tended to the

study, the students accumulated the tendency to survey from the

respondents. The collected information and data were counted, inspected,

coordinated, and translated by the analysts.

Scoring of the responses. The most widely used approach to scaling

responses in survey research, and the verbal interpretation for frequency:

Strongly Agree, Agree, Neutral, Disagree and Strongly Disagree. The

scoring is as follows:
45

3.50 - 4.49 Agree

2.50 - 3.49 Neutral

1.50 - 2. 49 Disagree

1.00 - 1.49 Strongly Disagree

Data Analysis

The gathered data will be shown in tables and will be tallied carefully.

The results will be accurately arranged to categorize in their respective

tables and treated with statistical treatment to yield reliable scores.

The results about the problems that the researchers stated will be given

statistical treatment:

Frequency. It will be used to determine the number of responses on the

test given.

Weighted mean. It will be used to identify the mean score.

Composite mean. It will be used to compute the overall mean of all the

given questions or statements presented by researchers to their

respondents.

CHAPTER IV: PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION

OF DATA

The purpose of this chapter is to summarize the collected data and the

statistical treatment, and mechanics of analysis. It also includes the

explanation of the object of each experiment, question, or objective,

pointing out salient results coming from the respondents and presenting

those results by table or figure. This chapter presents the results, analysis

and discussion of data collected from 92 respondents regarding the impact

of the social media influencers to the STEM students’ academic

performance.

Based on the results, Table 1 has obtained a composite mean of 3.33,

interpreted as “Neutral”. Specifically, the statement "I’m able to think

positively every day when watching one of my favorite influencers," which

obtained a weighted mean of 3.70 and interpreted verbally as "Agree," is

regarded as the factor that accumulated the highest weighted mean.

Nonetheless, the statement "I'm not influenced by Social Media

personnel", is accumulated as the factor of least weighted mean as it

garnered a weighted mean of 2.79 and has a verbal interpretation of

"Neutral."

The researchers concurred that social media influencers had a

significant impact on the students, particularly on their state of mind and

attitude. It encourages people to think optimistically and to aspire for a

better lifestyle like their favored influencers. Students and adolescents can

modify their view on life by observing these influencers' lifestyles, which

progressively influences their decisions, particularly when it comes to

purchasing items advised by these influencers. It proves that the majority

are influenced by social media influencers, while the remainder are

impartial in their own judgments.

49
HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL
of Padre Garcia, Bats., Inc.
Senior High School

The researchers discovered similarities of the current review to crafted

by Hoek (2020), which showed that forces to be reckoned with appear to

assume a huge part in the existence of minors. To begin with, minors

invest a lot of energy watching, perusing, such as, sending, and remarking

on the material of powerhouses. In that capacity, the degree of inclusion

with powerhouse content has all the earmarks of being high. Second,

minors seek these forces to be reckoned with for something other than

delight; they need information, direction, organization, and solace.

Besides, the two examinations concur that powerhouses' substance might

influence the mental prosperity and realism of youths and understudies. In

conclusion, in contrast to the analysts' review, this review tended to have

both the positive and troublesome results of following online media forces

to be reckoned with.

Compared to the current review, Croes et al. (2020), exhibits that

they've investigated the motivations of energetic adults for following social

medias and explored social distinctive proof as a likely essential instrument

in the association with these motivations and youths. In addition, the

revelations showed that the meaning of the motivations for following

rocking' rollers differed between age, social occasions, genders, and

50

educational establishments. Like the analysts' review, one of the primary

focal points of this review is to see what powerhouses mean for the buying

propensities and inspirations of youthful grown-ups. In contrast to the

current review, this exploration zeroed in additional on the variables that

inspire youthful grown-ups to follow their chosen social forces to be

reckoned with and the system in the connection to these inspirations and

youthful grown-ups' internet-based ad clicking.

interpreted as “Agree”. Reverse to that only a few responded answered

“Influencers helped me to get higher grades” that has a weighted mean of

2.93 verbally interpreted as “Neutral”. Overall, the table presents the

composite mean of 3.45 and verbally interpreted as “Neutral”.

Realizing that English is the widespread language, the scientists

presumed that online media forces to be reckoned with generally impact

further developing understudies on sentence structure development and

their correspondence to this is trailed by web-based media staff moving

understudies by inspirational discourse. A few understudies' scholastic

exhibition isn't influenced by online media powerhouses however the

majority of them are spurred to their examinations by instructive forces to

be reckoned with and some forces to be reckoned with likewise assist

them with being dynamic at school. For certain examples, barely any

understudies actually keep up with their high grades because of the way

that they were massively impacted by online media powerhouses.

The article related with Boateng (2016) Entitled "The Impact of Social

Media on Student Academic Life on Higher Education" in which it is

expressed that web-based media gives understudies one more medium to

53
HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL
of Padre Garcia, Bats., Inc.

survey their classes, environmental elements, and some more.

Notwithstanding online media is a method of how understudies speak with

others. Understudies today use online media in any spot and at whatever

point they need, where web affiliation is allowed to meet their enlightening

necessities. The thing that matters is only that the article centers around

online media and the exploration centers around the web-based media

staff, yet, it is associated with the examination of powerhouses impacting

understudies where this medium leads understudies to the powerhouses

that they appreciate.

One more comparable review expressed by Baird and Fisher (2011),

the "interface" by means of online media has a huge impact in

understudies' motivation, upkeep, and learning in passed on learning

conditions". Through internet-based media, influencers interface with

understudies where understudies can acquire information and can assist

them with their investigations. Utilizing the medium likewise helps online

media powerhouses gain fans yet this is through their substance, this can

be instructive, for stress alleviation, or for motivation.

Composite Mean 18.4

Nowadays, most of the students consumed their time on social media.

Social networking is increasingly popular among youth. Students can

easily be swayed. For this matter, the table shows that the highest total of

responses among others is “1-2 hours” that shows a total of 39

respondents with the percentage of 42.4%. However, “More than 8 hours”

56
HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL
of Padre Garcia, Bats., Inc.
Senior High School

has the lowest response with the total of 3 respondents is equivalent to the

percentage of 3.3%. The table excluded a composite mean of 18.4. Verbal

interpretation is not included in this table due to the fact that the

researchers only tend to have knowledge or information about the length of

time spent by the students in watching their favorite social media

influencers.

This generation, many individuals are relying on technology. As the

technology widens, the wider social media spreads. Most users are

composed of students, including children, teenagers, and young adults.

According to the theory that the researchers have conducted, the majority

of the respondents use their social media between one to two hours in

which the average user should only spend 2 hours and 24 minutes per

day. Inversely, some people spend less and some spend half of their day

scrolling through social media. Spending more than 8 hours on social

media can have a huge impact on the students’ time management. The

usage of social media has a huge impact within the students’ lifestyle. In

which, it can cause either good or bad effects not only on the students will

of educating itself but also in their daily lifestyle. On the contrary, practicing
57
HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL
of Padre Garcia, Bats., Inc.
Senior High School

how to use social media correctly can help not only the students but every

individual to educate oneself and choose to live a healthy lifestyle.

Related with Conroy (2013), in her book entitled " iDisorder:

Understanding our Obsession with Technology and Overcoming its Hold

on Us" It is more probable for twenty- to thirty-year-old and people with

youthful age to be helpless against the mental impacts of web-based

media and cell phones. It is said that online media is some way or another

thought about an interruption and interference. For certain cases, the

fixation via web-based media and innovation influences the time use of the

understudies. This is identified with the examination where it portrays the

fixation of understudies with their online media and versatile contraptions.

Today, colossal contrasts among understudies and its mentality towards

innovation and the youthful ages guarantee that they are invulnerable from

the adverse consequences of innovation yet actually, most understudies

are encountering definitely more nerves or encountering a more habitual

conduct than different ages. These can be brought about by the

unfortunate utilization of web-based media and influence the students time

between utilizing the online media and zeroing in on their scholastic

credits.
58
HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL
of Padre Garcia, Bats., Inc.
Senior High School

In the connection of the investigation of Hashem (2015), among the

younger age, the time they spend by means of online media, what she

calls 'redirection media' is "more than two times the typical proportion of

time spent in school each year." shows that the understudy invests more

energy in web-based media instead of examining and zeroing in on their

scholastic status. Understudies are bound to go through twice the hours of

understudies spend on a school in a day. One factor of these is web-based

media forces to be reckoned with in which they watch via online media and

distinctive web-based media stages that are utilized by their motivation.

The connection of this article in the examination is that understudies invest

more energy utilizing online media as opposed to in school. Furthermore, it

is said to influence the students’ scholastic exhibitions.

There are lot of possible ways to improve the academic performances of

the students while following the influencers but only one stand out. Base

on the results gathered from the respondents, Table 4 exuded a composite

mean of 4.19 and verbal interpretation of “Agree”. Among all the possible

ways only one statement leads into highest weighted mean that resulted of

4.42 which makes a verbal interpretation of “Agree” and that is “Follow

nontoxic influencers”. Contrarily, with the suggestion of “Make a schedule

61
HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL

interpretation of “Agree”, is accumulated as the factor of least weighted

mean as it garnered.

Based on the theory that was produced by the researchers, most

respondents are likely to suggest self-awareness concerning the

development of a cognitive representation of the self. Adolescents

choosing to process the information they are given online cannot be

equated to either a positive or negative experience when most of the time,

the full use of an adolescents’ experience on social media is multifaceted.

For some instances, the impact of social media influencers may have both

desirable and undesirable consequences. It is indeed to keep an eye on

non-toxic influencers in order to be aware about the way how the netizens

act based on what they’ve watched and whom to follow. These

recommendations will be an advantage for the students and also for the

influencers on how teenagers identify themselves, and choose to identify

themselves in online communities and social networks in order to cope up

with the academic performances, which are heavily impacted by the

identity cues they pick up from social media influencers.

According to Shen and Kuo (2015), realizing that online media

powerhouses is crucial for informational experts, since they collect

62
HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL
of Padre Garcia, Bats., Inc.
Senior High School

relationships with the students to proactively utilize electronic media to

propel web learning or compact learning courses. Additionally, it separated

the examples of web learning and adaptable learning by going with

perspectives: the edifying estimations of the web-based media

powerhouses, the month to month and hourly line charts and the volume

designs. These perspectives can give informational specialists particular

strategies for perception and explaining the overall evaluations toward web

learning and adaptable learning.

In concurrence with the investigation of Yousra et al., (2012), they

have found that using YouTube accounts made by powerhouses urges

understudies to look for in accounts, and begin using YouTube as an

educational resource. The principal test is the evaluation of the reliability of

the substance; accordingly, content decisions should be made by the

educator. All in all, YouTube accounts have been an important wellspring

of informative substance, it is a free web-based gadget, and the impact

has been altogether reliant upon the survey on understudies' show.

Instructors and students have used YouTube accounts in various fields, for

instance, nursing in and have shown to be a convincing gadget to overhaul

understudies' learning and responsibility.

Conclusions

Based on the findings of the study, the researchers concurred that

there are various levels of influence instilled by social media influencers on

69
HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL
of Padre Garcia, Bats., Inc.
Senior High School

the students. In addition, the researchers provided the following

conclusions:

1. Most of the students are highly affected by social media influencers,

especially in terms of the factors involved in their daily life. These

influences include the changes in an individuals’ mindset, product

consumption, judgment, perspective, and life objectives.

2. Social media influencers have a significant impact on students’

academic performances. Influencers presenting academic content

and facts in social media have gradually improved the students’

learning motivation, class participation, communication skills, and

academic grades. They are also proven to inspire the students

through their motivational speeches.

3. There are varying time consumptions in terms of the students’

dedication to watching their preferred influencers. Most of the

students consume at least 1-4 hours a day in scrolling the social

media for their favored influencers while the remaining students

have spent at most 5 to more than 8 hours a day.

4. For the proposed plans and strategies, while following the advice

and contents of the social media influencers, the students must

70

of Padre Garcia, Bats., Inc.

compose a discrete schedule for studying and entertainment. They

must carefully choose content that is considered respectable,

educational, and enjoyable at the same time for the students to

achieve an improvement in their academic performances. In

addition, it would most likely be preferable to avoid toxic influencers

and those who present contents that may negatively impact a

students' academic performance.

Recommendations

Recommendations are intended to encourage others to take action or

find answers to the issues raised in the research paper. Based on the
71
HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL
of Padre Garcia, Bats., Inc.
Senior High School

findings of the investigation, the recommendations identify specific

solutions and steps that should be adopted. Considering the findings and

conclusions of the present study, the researchers prepared the following

recommendations below that ought to consider:

1. In recent years, access to and use of social media has continued to

grow. The school administration should consider conducting a

seminar or symposium at the senior level to be aware of the social

pros and cons of the social media world, to improve and provide

reliable information on how social media influencers influenced the

youth nowadays. Additionally, they should be informed about the

impacts of social media in their everyday lives especially on their

academic performances. The school directress or those people

having the authority to implement this kind of seminar should know

and consider the students’ preference on how their academic

performance can take guarantee by the social media influencers

through conducting a seminar.

2. Using social media platforms to communicate, share ideas, and

enhance own professional development opportunities as a result of

72
HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL
of Padre Garcia, Bats., Inc.
Senior High School

the proliferation of online resources and increased accessibility.

Knowing that networking or gathering materials ignore the

underlying assumption for such behavior, which makes it difficult to

comprehend social media use as a professional learning activity. It is

a must to promote or advertise educational social media influencers

by the superiors. Also, they must be related and learn more about

how to use properly the modern technology today in order to have

effective understanding and to keep pace with change. Furthermore,

to assist in enlightening and to spread awareness on the possible

influence it has on them.

3. Digital competencies are required for both parents and teenagers as

social media platforms become more complicated and multipurpose.

Parents have increased issues with social media as their children

grow up, leading to concerns about their child on the social media

mediation. Web developers should prioritize and give importance to

all people who don’t have enough knowledge to use different apps.

They should develop or introduce an app that would be connected to

another device so that they can receive notifications from that

73
HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL
of Padre Garcia, Bats., Inc.
Senior High School

certain app on what another device is browsing or watching videos

to monitor their children on the usage of the social networking site.

4. In conducting a similar study, future researchers should state if they

want to pursue this study about the level of influence instilled by

social media influencers among students' academic performances.

This study should discover information, allowing future researchers

to explore and gain new knowledge in regards to the proper use of

social media for academic purposes. Furthermore, they should

comprehend to identify trends affecting social media to help

managers and researchers better understand social media.
