Question 1: CO2: Analyse, design and detail reinforced concrete slab in accordance to
the relevant codes of practice in building design.

a) Explain with a sketch of diagram the difference between suspended and non-suspended
slab.

b) Figure 1 shows a section of a ground floor layout plan for a community hall in Taman Sri
Damai, Gambang. The owner of this project wanted to have an economic design. As a civil
engineer, design the reinforcement using (i) and (ii) and propose the most economic design.
Complete the layout plan with detailing of the reinforcement in plan view and cross-section.
Assume all missing data.

i) BRC

c) Figure 2 shows a ground plan of a school building. As a structural engineer, you are
required to design the slabs as suspended slab. Assume any missing data.

i) Design the main reinforcement for slab S1, S2 and S3;

ii) Considering slab S1 is the most critical slab, check the shear;

iii) Check deflection of slab S1;

iv) Check cracking of slab S1;

v) Construct the plan view and cross-section detailing of S1, S2 and S3.
