Communication culture in ASEAN

Indonesia and Singapore

Communication style differs according to the pace you are currently residing in.
One action that signifies respect in a certain culture can have a different meaning in
another. Southeast Asian culture though, is closely intertwined. A lot of us actually share
customs and communication style.
Starting with the verbal communication, both Indonesia and Singapore prefer
being soft spoken as it shows respect. The tone of the voice is expected to be mellow.
One thing to take note is that Singaporeans are accustomed to have a
respectful pause before answering. Talking loudly and trying to speak while someone
else is also talking is considered rude. Both countries actually prefer indirect
communication, when talking you have to take note of their body language. Let’s take
saying ‘No’ as an example, both countries would not explicitly say No, they do it
indirectly. In Singapore, speaking loudly is rude.
On the non-verbal aspect, Indonesians see putting your hands on the hips as a
sign that you are angry. They also do not use their left hand when waving or offering
something as it is considered as the unclean hand.
Singapore on the other hand, considers pointing as rude. Pounding of your fist in
your palm is also considered rude.

We as Southeast Asian countries do have differing cultures but a lot of those

cultures aren’t specifically just imposed on a single country. We as a group of nation also
share a common set of culture.
