Primary Source
Step 1: Identify Things
Santiago Alvarez’s Account on the Tejeros Convention is a
primary source because it based purely on what Alvarez
witnessed during the event itself without other resources or
research.
Santiago Alvarez’s Account on the Tejeros Convention is a
memoir of what he had witnessed at the convention. It was
started on March 14, 1986 but was published in 1920.
Santiago Alvarez was a captain general later becoming
commander-in-chief for the Magdiwang forces.
Step 2: Understand things
Meeting between the Magdiwang men and the Magdalo men
to discuss their defense strategy for the Magdiwang areas;
however, the topic of what kind of government should be
established came up. This caused quite an uproar especially
when the elections were conducted and finished as Mr. Daniel
Tirona disagreed with the position Mr. Bonifacio won.
Step 3: Connect Things
Alvarez’s bias on the election in the Tejeros Convention. He
mentions what the people present have done and the event.
Both documents convey the unfair treatment occurring at the Tejeros Convention as well as the tension between both parties
and the inability to compromise for the better of the areas within their control and the democracy of the Filipinos.
Secondary Source
Agoncillo’s Seed of Discontent is a secondary source because
it is based on other sources of information since he was not
at the event itself.
Agoncillo’s Seed of Discontent is a journal article analysing
the events that occurred in the Tejeros Convention. It was
published in 1947.
Teodoro Andal Agoncillo is a famous historian and literary
writer.
Agoncillo’s seed of discontent spoke of what Alvarez
witnessed with an outside perspective. Tension between the
Magdiwang and the Magdalo was supposed to have
subsided by the time of the convention. However, despite
ruling out that anyone can be be nominated and win a
position despite their occupation and skills, Tirona opposed
Bonifacio’s win for Director of Interior for a lawyer would be
better fit for the position.
Agoncillo’s bias towards what happened to Bonifacio is
clearly stated in the article.
What is the contribution of the documents
Both documents contributed in the clear description of Aguinaldo replacing Bonifacio as the president of the revolutionary
helping us understand grand narrative of
government. It also shows the significance of the Tejeros Convention for the Philippine Revolution.
