● Setting the classroom environment (arranging the chairs, checking if the

classroom is clean and orderly).
● Ensuring a safe learning environment for everyone. Giving of New Normal
classroom rules.

B. Presentation
1. Drills/Activity:
Directions: Read the short paragraph. Then identify the words that show
similarities and differences.
The boy liked birds, but he was afraid of cats. Similarly, he did not like lions
and tigers. On the contrary, he liked animals that could fly, such as sparrows
and falcons. Likewise, he thought bats were the most interesting mammals
because of their wings.

2. Analysis: Probing Questions/ Guide Questions:

What are the words used to show similarities and differences?

C. Lesson Proper
Directions: Read the paragraph. Identify the two subjects being compared
and contrasted, then give their similarities and differences.

There are several characteristics which distinguish plants from animals. Green
plants are able to manufacture their own food from substances in the environment. This
process is known as photosynthesis. In contrast, animals, including man, get their food
either directly from plants or indirectly by eating animals which have eaten plants.
Plants are generally stationary. Animals, on the other hand, can usually move about. In
external appearance, plants are usually green. They grow in a branching fashion at their
extremities, and their growth continues throughout their lives. Animals, however, are
very diverse in their external appearance. Their growth pattern is not limited to their
extremities. It is evenly distributed and only occurs in a definite time period.

D. Problem
How to distinguish similarities from differences?

E. Generalization
Compare and Contrast is a text structure or pattern of organization where the
similarities and differences of two or more things are explored.
• Similarity - the state of something almost the same, or a particular way in which
something is almost the same.
• Contrast –to compare to show unlikeness or differences.
F. Evaluation
Directions: Read the passage, then identify the similarities and differences using
the Venn diagram. Use a separate sheet for your answer.

The schools today and in the past are similar in a few ways and different in some
aspects. Both have learning room, a teacher, and books. However, the classrooms in
the past are considered concrete structures where learning should take place. On the
other hand, the classrooms today utilize technology like LCD projectors, laptops, and
other gadgets. Another is that lessons in the past were from print materials while
lessons of today are from e-books and other online platforms. No matter how alike and
different the schools in the past and today are, what matters most is how effective
learning takes place.
G. Closing
Directions: Read the passage. Identify the similiarities and differences using the
Venn diagram.
Apples and oranges are both fruits, which means that they have seeds inside
of them. Each has a skin, but orange skins are thick and easy to peel. Apple skins are
thinner and do not peel easily. Oranges also contain more acid than apples, but both
fruits are delicious.

Group B : Chickens and Ducks

2.Analysis: Probing Questions/ Guide Questions

How do we know that the purpose of the the text is compare and contrast?

C. Lesson Proper
D. Problem
1. What two subjects are being compared and contrasted in the paragraph?
2. How are they similar? different?

E. Generalization
Identifying when the writer is comparing and contrasting is usually not difficult
because the speaker will bounce back and forth between two subjects and this pattern
is generally pretty easy to recognize. However, here are some signal words that may
indicate that the text is written using the compare and contrast organizational pattern:
like, unlike, both, neither, similar, and different.
F. Evaluation

Directions: Read the paragraph and then fill in the Venn diagram to show the
differences and contrasts between the characters.

Liam and Jacob are twin brothers. They both have brown hair, brown eyes and are
exactly the same height. Because they are twins, the brothers share a birthday but they
always receive different presents. Last year Liam received a football whereas Jacob
received a new computer game. Liam prefers to spend his time playing outside but
Jacob prefers to play inside where it doesn’t rain. Despite their differences, both boys
love to watch TV together.

G. Closing
Write 2 sentences using the signal words like and unlike to show similarities and
differences.

Butterflies and bees have many things in common. They are both insects that
live all over the world. Another similarity is that they both have four wings. Their wings
are very different though. Butterflies have brightly colored wings while bees’ wings are
transparent. Bees live in large group called colonies. Butterflies do not. They often
travel by themselves. Butterflies and bees are also similar because they both feed off of
nectar and pollen from flowers.
