5. How many meters will be the travel if they will start at Ron’s house
passing to teacher Tina’s house to school? *1010 meters
Discussion
Let’s now try to understand a level-up analyzation of finding the distance,
speed, and time using word problem and formulas.
What is a Distance?
Distance is the total length between two points or position.
Find the Distance using the Formula D= S x T
“Roy’s bicycle can run 983 meters an hour, if he drives 5 hours, how far will he go?”
D= S x T
D= 983 m/hr x 5 hr
D= 4,915 meters
*Fun Fact: Did you know that a bicycle is an example compound machine?
Science 6 - MELC: Manipulate simple machines to describe their characteristics and uses S6FE-IIIg-i-3
What is Speed?
Speed is a scalar quantity that refers to how fast or slow an object is moving.
Average Speed is a measure of the distance traveled in a given period of time.
It is sometimes referred to as the ratio of distance and time.
Find the Speed using the Formula S= D/T or S= D÷T
“A car runs from one side of the park across to the other. The park is 80 meters across.
The car takes 16 seconds to cross the park. What is the speed of the car?”
S= D/T
S= 80 meters/16seconds
S= 5 m/s
*Why does the car travel faster in going down than in going up?
Science 6 - MELC: Infer how friction and gravity affect movements of different objects S6FE-IIIa-c-1
What is Time?
Time is the quantity measured or measurable period during which an action
process or condition exists or continues.
Find the Time using the Formula T= D/S or T= D÷S
“Roy wants to travel a 380 miles town; his car can run 60 miles an hour. How long will it
take Roy to reach the town?”
T= D/S
T= 380 miles/60 miles/hr
T= 6.33 hours
Individual Practice
Group Activity
Directions: Compute each driver’s speed, distance, and time. Use the formula.
S= D/T or S= D÷T, D= S x T, T= D/S or T= D÷S.
