Let Us Study!
20th and 21st Centuries Multimedia Forms and Original Performance with the Use of Media

Theater
In general, the term theater refers to a witnessed, purposeful spectacle. It is a form of art performed
by live actors who use speech, song, or movement to perform or represent real or imagined events. This
collaborative art form, which is performed in a certain place (usually a stage), is seen or witnessed by a live
audience. It also uses other forms of art such as dance, painting, sculpture, architecture, installation, and
even film to enhance the theater experience of the audience.
20th and 21st Centuries Multimedia Forms
Opera
An opera is a staged play or dramatic work whose text or libretto is entirely sung by the characters. It
is one theater form that combines drama, poetry, dance, and, most importantly, music. An opera may have
any theme, but mostly it talks of love in its many forms and aspects. Stories of operas may be based on
historic events, tragedies, love stories, legends, and myths; operas have plots of revenge, forbidden love,
power, and war, to name a few.
The opera has a script, called the libretto, which can be originally made for an opera, or it may be
based on a pre rewritten literature by a famous poet, novelist, or writer. The opera s sung from beginning to
end. There are no unsung monologues or dialogues; the closest to speaking in this theater form is done
through a recitative, a rhythmically vocal style that imitates the natural inflections of speech.
Singing is done by the actors themselves on stage thus, there is a need for formal vocal training for
any actor who wants to perform in operas. Characters for any opera stories would require one or more of the
enumerated vocal classifications, as music for each part in the opera is composed for a particular vocal
range. Vocal rangers for female actors are from the high pitch to the lowest-soprano, mezzo-soprano, and
alto. The soprano classification is further classified according to timbre and power-coloratura for the lightest
and highest lyric, and dramatic for the rich-sounding voice, Male voices are classified as tenor for the high
range, baritone for the middle range, and bass for the low profound sounding male singer.
Examples of Opera
Noli Me Tangere: The Opera

In the year 1957, National Artist for Music Felipe Padilla de Leon together with Guillermo
Tolentino, National Artist for Visual Arts, as librettist, collaborated to write the music and libretto of this
opera based on the novel of José Rizal. This opera was first presented in the same year at the Far Eastern
University Auditorium.
El Filibusterismo: The Opera
The opera El Filibusterismo was composed in 1970, and it was also created in collaboration with
Felipe Padilla de Leon. Just like the novel, the opera is a sequel to Noli Me Tangere.
La Loba Negra
La Loba Negra is a three-act Filipino opera composed by Francisco Feliciano, National Artist for
Music. Fides Cuyugan-Asencio, who is the opera's librettist, took on the title role in its world premiere in
1984 at the CCP. The 1984 production of La Loba Negra was directed by National Artist Lamberto
Avellana, with a period setting.
Ballet
Ballet is a form of theatrical entertainment in which dancer express mood, thoughts, and feelings
through their body movement that tell a story. Traditional ballet is a combination of dance, music, and
theater that produces a highly aesthetic entertainment form
Ballet dancers have extensive formal training to learn elaborate techniques, which take years to
perfect. Hand, feet, body, and facial movements and expressions are important as this relay the messages to
the audience. One technique is the end pointe, a French term for "on the tip" which requires a dancer to
stand on the tip of his or her toes, wearing reinforced pointed shoes. This creates a floating feel and
movement, making ballet dancers move seamlessly on the stage. This technique creates an illusion of
weightlessness. Developing this technique requires year of practice, as it needs agility of foot and ankle
strength.
Examples of Ballet
Rama Hari
Rama Hari is a Filipino pop-ballet musical based on the Indian epic Ramayana with music composed
by Ryan Cayabyab, dance and choreography by Alice Reyes, and libretto by National Artist for Literature
Bienvenido Lumbera. This is a unique form of ballet wherein each role in the story has a ballet dancer and
an actor or singer who performs simultaneously. Its overall effect is a rich blend literally of music dance,
and theater. The libretto or text completes Rama Hari into a production that has been appreciated by
audiences across generations.
Lola Basyang
"Lola Basyang " is the pen name of Severino Reyes, a highly respected playwright of sarsuwelas.
This character has become synonymous with a motherly character who tells stories to the young. Reyes was
the editor of the Filipino magazine Liwayway, which features folk and popular literature. The said magazine
had a section titled "Mga Kwento ni Lola Basyang," of which, Reyes wrote the stories.
Musical Play
A musical play (or music theater) is a theater form that incorporates music, songs, dialogue, and
dance into one stage spectacle. Varied topics such as love, humor, history, culture, and just about anything
that pertains to the life of a person are tackled in a musical theater. Unlike the opera, a musical play may
have spoken lines, though they are kept to a minimal.
Musical theater or plays are very popular around the world. You have probably heard of Broadway
musicals, some of which have toured the world because of their popularity.
The Philippines is also known as one of the centers of musical plays on this side of the world. From
the time when the Spaniards came to our country, Filipinos have seen zarzuelas. Eventually, Filipinos have
adopted and acculturated this theater form. Thus, in the early 1900s, the sarswela has become the primary
entertainment form of Filipinos.

Sarswela such as Walang Sugat, Dalagang Bukid, and Kahapon, Ngayon at Bukas, were popular
during the first decades of the 20th century. During the World War I, a loose type of show called the bodabil
came into play and became the staple entertainment fare during the Japanese period, Eventually, modern
theatrical musicals were written and composed by local composers and playwrights.
Andres Bonifacio: Ang Dakilang Anak Pawis is a five-act musical that was composed by Jerry
Dadap in the 1970s. The musical speaks of the life and heroism of the great Filipino plebian Andres
Bonifacio.

Theater is a collaborative art form, it is not put up by the director, actor, or playwright alone. While
the actor interprets the words of the playwright under the instruction of the director, what people usually do
not see is a team behind the scene whose members have collaborated with one another and who worked hard
to make the performance itself possible.
1. Producers – Producers are the ones who raise money to fund a show. They also source or assemble
the team who will make the show. Producers coordinate and are responsible for every administrative
side of a production. They also organize and manage marketing and promotion. Producers are
involved from the inception of the project to its final wrap-up. An independent producer will be
responsible if a theater company does not produce its own shows.
2. Directors – Directors bring together every complex piece of a play (script, actors, set design, sound
and music, lights, props and costumes) into a cohesive whole. To achieve this task, they need to meet
with the playwright(s) to talk about the script, cast the production, build the design team, plan the
rehearsals, guide the actors during rehearsals, and regularly meet with the team. Directors are the
production leaders, interpreting and executing every artistic component and communicating their
artistic vision to the team.
3. Actors/Performers – An actor, also called performer or thespian, is a person who portrays a
character in a performance. The primary job of theater actors is to breathe life to the characters
created by the playwright and to present the vision of the director on stage. Good actors are highly
imaginative, empathic, and emotionally honest. They understand the psychology of human behavior,
and they show their love for language. Good actors also have the ability to listen and really focus,
and they possess skills for research, high-level reading, and text analysis. They regularly undergo
training to make their voice clearer, more powerful, and more expressive. They also undergo
physical training for grace and flexibility, Good actors learn new skills such as dancing, singing,
playing musical instruments, and being able to improvise to widen their range.
4. Playwrights – Playwrights are responsible for the script. A script on its own be considered a work of
literature, but its potential can be fully realized when it is staged-when the director combines the
skills of other artists to transform it into a live production. Playwrights must have a rich imagination,
which is needed to create a riveting story. They understand the needs of the audience, using the
elements of drama to create a believable and relatable story. Playwrights also write good dialogues
and script because they have good ears for capturing how people speak in real-life situations. They
understand nonverbal means of communication in the theater and make use of other production
aspects such as movement, music, lighting, and set design.
5. Choreographers – Choreographers are responsible for all choreographic decisions in the production.
They are responsible for the audition's choreography portion, in selecting numbers, and in
choreography rehearsals. Along with the director, they can make casting decisions. Choreographers
serve as movement coaches throughout the show, instructing actors on how to perform the
choreography. They work with the director in blocking and directing parts of the play the assistant
choreographers, if needed.
6. Stage Managers – Stage managers are primarily responsible for providing organizational and
practical support to the director, actors, design team, as well as technicians. They provide support
from the beginning to the end of the production run. They have to schedule and coordinate
production meetings and rehearsals and to communicate with the actors and staff. During the show
run, they are the ones who call the show and make sure that there are no problems on the acting and
technical cues Stage managers are the representatives of the director during shows, ensuring that
everything runs smoothly.
7. Light Designers – Lighting is important in any theatrical production. It highlights the production
style, arouses certain mood, and combines every visual element into a cohesive whole. Light
designers, who collaborate with the director in establishing the show's lighting design, are

responsible for all of these. They make decisions and implement plans regarding production concerns
such as light color, intensity, position, movement, and transition Lighting operators make sure that
transitions are executed on cue.
8. Set or Stage Designers – The scenery, props, furniture, and other objects the audience sees on stage
form the set design. It is the job of set designers to create a set that creates the appropriate mood and
atmosphere and effectively sets the tone of the production. Set designers work closely with the
director in building a set that effectively communicates the feel and style of the production, they also
collaborate with lighting and costume designers to make sure that the production's vision is achieved.
9. Costume Designer – Stage costumes are important in theatrical productions, as these elements give
the audience information about the setting and the characterization of the production. Is the play set
in the past, present, or distant future? What do the costumes say about the main character's social
status, age, sense of fashion, behavior. personality, or beliefs? Like other aspects of theater, stage
costumes establish the tone and mood of the production, make a statement about how characters are
related to one another, and suggest character development. Costume designers work with the
director, cast, and other members of the team to achieve what they envision for the production.
10. Other Roles
 Sound designers make plans and decide on the sound effects, ambient music, or soundscapes
that are used during the show.
 Musical directors are responsible for the cast's vocal performance and accompanying
orchestra or band's instrumental performance.
 Makeup and hair designers work with the director in coming up with makeup and hair design.
They work with the actor before and during the show.
 Props coordinators collaborate with the director and set designer in deciding what items must
appear on stage, as well as what props will be used by the actors.
 Carpenters are responsible for realizing the design (hand drawn or digitally illustrated) made
by the set designer.
 House managers are tasked to make sure that the house (lobby and seating area for audience)
is running flawlessly during the show run.
 Ushers are responsible for controlling audience traffic prior to, during, and after the show.
 Publicists are the ones who plan and execute media strategies that will hopefully bring
interest and excite the public on the upcoming production.

Let Us Study!
Tap Dance
Tap dance is a step dance tapped out audibly by means of shoes with hard soles and heels to which
taps have been added. In the 1920s, taps, which were usually made of metals, were nailed or screwed on the
heels and toe soles. The person who wore theses shoes would tap hard on the floor to make synchronized
tapping sounds. It was also during this time that entire chorus lines on stage shows, such as “Shuffle Along,”
were all wearing tap shoes. Their dance was later known as tap dancing.

History of Tap Dancing

Tap dancing started in the United States. The moves were a combination of several percussive ethnic
dances. Its influences include African tribal dances, Scottish, Irish, and English clog dances, hornpipes, and
jigs. It was believed that African slaves and Irish servants showed their folk dances during festivities at the
cotton and wheat plantations in the southern part of United States. From this interethnic contact, tapdancing
was born. Some researchers, however, suggest that tap dancing was popularized in urban centers, such as the
Five Points district in New York City, where migrants of diverse ethnicities converged to work in factories
during the late 20th century.

Other influences of tap dancing came out from buck dancing, which is similar to clog dance; soft-
shoe dancing, which is popular in vaudeville, and buck-and-wing dancing, which is a fast and flashy dance
done in wooden-soled shoes, and with the combination of the Irish clogging style, high kicks, and complex
African rhythms. Steps included shuffle and slide, which ads
the forerunner of rhythm tap.

Contemporary Dance
Contemporary dance is another version of a dance that features modern steps. In the late 19th and
early 20th centuries, modern dance became popular. It is a deviation of the rigid rules or formality of
classical ballet.
A contemporary dance does not follow the specific pattern of standard steps. Unlike in classical
ballet the style of contemporary dance shows an expression of oneself. It combines different elements of
various genres such as modern, jazz, lyrical, and classical ballet. The dancers keep their feet on the floor
most of the time.
Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham were the pioneers of contemporary dance. They believed
that dance is a form of expressing one's freedom through the movement.
History
Martha Graham (1894-1991) introduced and popularized what is known as the contemporary dance.
During her seven-decade career, Graham's modern dance and choreography became famous. Her

Mere Cunnningham (1919-2009), meanwhile, refined the work of his colleague Graham and
expanded the modern dance with his own improvisations and choreography. During his career, he was
regarded as one of the greatest creative forces in American dance. Thousands of well-known professional
dancers later have preserved his style until today.
Cunningham, who started as a student of Graham, accompanied his dance in April 1944 with music
that was composed and performed by John Cage. It was he who said that Cunningham's dance "No longer
relies on linear elements ...) nor does it rely on a movement towards and away from climax. As in abstract
painting, it is assumed that an element (a movement, a sound a change of light is in and of itself expressive:
what it communicates is in large part determined by the observer themselves.
Techniques
Cunningham uses the body's own line of energy to promote easy, natural movements focusing on the
architecture of the human body in space, rhythm, and articulation. With Its emphasis on line and shape,
Cunningham's dance style may appear like a ballet, but his motives and methods were completely different.
For him, dance is essentially about people moving. It has no connection with music, with stories, and with
feelings. So, Cunningham didn't choreograph on those bases. His works may have a score, but it is made
separate from the choreography; the same applies for the production scenario. Elements meant to work
together. In performance are created independently by trusted collaborators.

Graham's technique was characterized by floor work and use of abdominal and pelvic contractions.
The style was very grounded and the technique visibly contrary to the sylphlike, airborne climactic
movement of ballet.
