b. Analysis
Now, class. Do you think your answers are (Students clapped)
correct?

Why? Yes, sir.

Sir, because prefix should be at the beginning of

the word, while the suffix should be found at the
end of the word. And of course, singular terms are
Okay, very good! Prefix can be found at supposed to have a plural term and also the

can be found at the end of the root word. But
remember that not all words have prefixes
and suffixes. For example: dog, chair, and
run.
Those verbs and nouns are the words that you
could not add suffix or prefix.
I hope you already have a prior
knowledge about the activity that we
conducted.

c. Abstraction
I have a question, what is technical terms
in your own idea.
Technical terms are words that has a different
meaning from its root words.
Okay very good! So here is the definition of
technical terms. Please read.
Technical terms are words or phrases that people
use in specific career field.
Precisely! These terms can be any word or
phrases that has a specialized meaning within
a particular field of expertise. For example
please read.
Example:
There were no wild horses in the area, or
The area of the square was 9 cm.
In the first sentence, “area” just means the
location you are in; there are wild horses near
where you are. In the second sentence, “area”
is a technical word; it has a specific meaning
when it’s used in mathematics. In
mathematics, “area” means “the size of a
surface”.
Let us come now to the common
components of technical terms. please
read.

technical words in English have their origins in
Greek and Latin words. They are often made up
of several components, and knowing these will

suffixes to provide additional information
to a word. Now, please read the definition
of prefix.

Prefix – found at the beginning of a word

The function of prefix is to elaborate, quality or

change the meaning of a word.

For example:
1. Prefix: an-
Meaning: no, not, without
Word: anaerobic
Word meaning: without air
2. Prefix: ante-
Meaning: before
Word: antecedent
Word meaning: existing before
3. Prefix: hemi-
Meaning: half
Now, can you give another example of term Word: hemisphere
using prefixes? Word meaning: half a sphere

Okay, very good! Let us proceed to the suffix. Sir, impossible. The prefix is im- which means is
Please read. “not or opposite of”.

Suffix – found at the end of a word. Suffix cannot

be used alone, but when added after a word it

example ‘communicative’ is an adjective,
change the meaning of the word.
‘communication ‘is a noun, and
‘communicate’ is a verb. They may also
describe a state, quality, action or relation.

Here are the other example. Please read.

Suffix: -itis

Meaning: inflammation
Word: dermatitis
Word meaning: skin inflammation

Suffix: -logy

Meaning: study of

Word: anthropology
Word meaning: study of the human race

Suffix: -oid

Now class, can you give another example Meaning: form

Word meaning: cube-shaped

Sir, endless. The suffix is ‘less-‘and the

Alright! meaning is without.
Now, let us move on to the noticing
common word structures. Please read.

There are often common ways of forming

technical words in a discipline. While there
are inconsistencies to general rules, knowing

ends with ‘s’.
Here are the following examples: please
read it out loud.

.
1. Singular: one vertebra
Plural: two vertebrae
2. Singular: a protozoon
Plural: many protozoa
3. Singular: a hypothesis
Plural: several hypotheses
Okay, very good! now, can you give a
word singular with plural term?

Great! Sir, nucleus and nuclei. Nucleus is singular

Let us proceed to the noticing how and nuclei is the plural.
technical terms are classified. Read the
definition.

Each discipline may use its own way or ways

of classifying its content, for example, by
system, groups, time periods, theories or
methods. Whichever way, main themes are
often divided into smaller topics, followed by
details and examples. The grouping of
content usually follows rules or principles
specific to the discipline.
Knowing how your discipline groups its
content helps you to locate technical terms in
a meaningful context, making it easier to
understand and recall them.

For example, biology uses the following

groupings for describing organism. Please
read.

1. System: Kingdom
Example: Animalia
2. System: Species
Example: Sapiens
3. System: Class
Now class, can you give another example Example: Vertebrata
of group, system or periods?
Sir, theory and the example is big bang
Correct! So, did you understand the theory.
lesson, class?

Yes, sir!
Again, what are the 3 technical terms?

1. common components of technical

terms
2. common word structures
Okay very good! I have a question, what are 3. how technical terms are classified.
the difference between prefix and suffix?

Sir, the difference between prefix and suffix

is that, prefix can be found at the beginning
of a word, while suffix can be found at the
end of a word.
Excellent! Now, why is it necessary to study
this lesson?

Sir, in order for us to be aware of technical

terms and we can use it in making research.
Very well said. I hope you are all aware of
that.
Do you have any questions or clarifications?
None, sir.
d. Application

Let us have again an activity. With

the same group, provide word that
has prefix and suffix and use it in a
sentence.

Each group should provide 6

words. 3 words for prefix and also
3 words for suffix. I will give you
only 5 minutes to finish your
activity.
