4. Underline the verbs and explain that they are in the past simple tense.
5. Tell students they are going to study this now.
6. Activity 1:
a. Pupils do p.67, Activity 1.
b. Read out the examples, then read through the rules with the class and elicit the answers.
c. Play the grammar animation.
d. Write on board verbs from previous lesson – ‘learn’, ‘go’, ‘start’, ‘do’.
e. Ask: Which two verbs are regular? What is the past form of the verbs? What is the past form of go
and do?
7. Activity 2:
a. Write on board ‘Young Talent Superstars’.
b. Give the handout with 11 irregular verbs to each pupil.

c. Pre-teach: dive, professional, contract.
d. Read the study strategy with the class and refer pupils to the irregular verbs list in the worksheet.
e. Pupils complete the text with the correct forms of the verbs. (Assessment)
f. Point out that pupils should check all the verbs in the irregular verbs list, and if some verbs are not
on the list, they can assume these verbs are regular.
g. Check answers with the class and elicit which verbs are regular and which are irregular.
8. Activity 3:
a. Pupils in pairs write Abdul on one piece of paper, Martin on another piece.
b. Explain you are going to read out some questions about the two superstars.
c. If the answer is Abdul, one pupil holds up Abdul, if Martin, partner holds up Martin.
d. Ask some questions, e.g. Who is the long jumper? Who is from Norway?
e. See which pairs get most answers correct.
f. CCE – Patriotism – Ask pupils if they think it’s better to do an individual sport or a team sport and
why.
g. Find out if they would like to represent Malaysia in an individual or a team sports completion.
9. Activity 4:
a. Pupils do Activity 3, CD2.17.
b. Play the audio once for pupils to listen then play it again, pausing after each verb for pupils to
repeat. (Assessment)
c. Ask the question to the class and elicit the answer with /d/ (scored, tried) and /id/ (competed,
wanted)
d. Ask: Can you think of another past verb with /t/ sound at end? (talked, liked).
e. Repeat with /d/ (scored, tried) and /id/ (competed, wanted)
10. Pupils in pairs decide if they would like to interview Fu or Martin and say why.
