This is the second (2) assessment task you must successfully complete to be deemed
competent in this unit of competency.
This assessment task is a Skills Test.
This assessment task consists of two (2) practical demonstration activities.
o Activity 1: Use hand tool to complete job task 1
o Activity 2: Use hand tool to complete job task 2
You will be notified by your trainer/assessor when your results are available.
You must attempt all activities of the project for your trainer/assessor to assess your
competence in this assessment task.
Applicable conditions:
This skill test is untimed and is conducted as an open book assessment (this means you
are able to refer to your textbook or other learner materials during the test).
You will be assessed independently on this assessment task.
No marks or grades are allocated for this assessment task. The outcome of the task will be
Satisfactory or Not Satisfactory.
As you complete this assessment task, you are predominately demonstrating your skills,
techniques and knowledge to your trainer/assessor.
Your trainer/assessor may ask you relevant questions during this assessment task
Location:
Your Trainer/Assessor will provide you with further information regarding the location for
completing this assessment task.
The purpose of this assessment task is to assess the student’s knowledge and skills essential to
use hand tools in a range of contexts and industry settings.
Skills to adhere to standard operating procedures (SOPs) at all times.
Skills to comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times.
Skills to adhere to standard operating procedures (SOPs) at all times.
Skills to select hand tools that are appropriate for the task.
Skills to use hand tools to produce results that meet job requirements.
Skills to before, during, and after use, identify unsafe or faulty tools and mark them for
repair according to designated procedures.
Skills to perform routine tool maintenance using engineering principles, tools, equipment,
and procedures.
Skills to store hand tools safely in accordance with procedures and manufacturer
recommendations.
Task instructions
This assessment task requires the student to use a range of hand tools for a variety of
general engineering applications.
The student is required to complete the following two (2) activities in this assessment task:
o Activity 1: Use hand tool to complete job task 1
o Activity 2: Use hand tool to complete job task 2
The trainer/assessor (Supervisor) will induct you to the worksite.
You will be required to complete all parts of this assessment task.
The templates for each activity are provided along with this assessment task.
The student must follow the instructions of the trainer/assessor (Supervisor).
The trainer/assessor must assess the performance of the student as per the performance
checklist provided.
This assessment task requires the student to use a range of hand tools for a variety of general
engineering applications. This includes:
Following work instructions, standard operating procedures (sops) and safe work practices
Selecting and using hand tools to produce the desired outcome to job specifications
The student must have basic understanding of drawing techniques, symbols before interpreting
drawings required to complete this activity.
Job requirements:
You have been assigned the task to complete the following three (3) job tasks.
Task 1: Given a length of Pacific Maple, wooden board or similar, mark out and cut the shape shown
below using woodworking chisels.
Task 2: Use hacksaw and cut metal rod into two (2) equal parts.
When using hand tools, you are required to use the standard operating procedures (SOP) given below.
Standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices for using hand tools
Impact or striking
Splinters
Eye injuries
PPE:
It is important to choose the right chisel for the job. They will vary widely, and are all
designed for specific purposes.
Only select and use chisels that are sharp and in good condition. Ensure that the cutting edge
is not dull or chipped.
Always ensure that both hands remain behind the cutting blade and on the chisel when
removing fine waste – particularly when hand paring and finishing.
When a mallet is required, strike the end of the chisel cleanly and deliberately, and only with
enough force to achieve an accurate result.
Work away from the body when striking a chisel with force.
Never place a chisel down where it can be knocked to the floor. Serious injury could result.
Housekeeping:
Sharp edges must be guarded. Store all chisels where their blades cannot be damaged or
become a hazard.
HAND SAWS
Eye injuries
PPE:
It is important to choose the right hand saw or cutting tool for the job. They will vary widely,
and are all designed for specific purposes.
Inspect the condition of the saw teeth and the “set” required for an effective cutting action.
For most hand-held saws, apply pressure on the forward or pushing stroke. Avoid excessive
effort as this may cause the blade to jam, over-heat, bend or break.
Both the coping saw and fret saw are designed for an effective cutting action on the backward

or pulling stroke. This helps maintain accurate control and keeps the blade tight.
For all hand saw frames with replaceable blades, check that all new blades are fitted correctly
with the teeth aligned to the direction of the cutting action, as required.
Take care to protect the sharp, exposed teeth of any hand saw blade and hole saws.
Housekeeping:
Wipe all hand saws clean, and return them to their appropriate storage cupboard or rack.
Replace the blades in all framed hand saws when they are, dull, bent, twisted or broken.
Job responsibilities:
As part of your job role, you will have the following responsibilities:
Comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times.
Before, during, and after use, identify unsafe or faulty tools and mark them for repair according
to designated procedures.
Perform routine tool maintenance using engineering principles, tools, equipment, and
procedures.
Store hand tools safely in accordance with procedures and manufacturer recommendations.
