connection to oneself, others, and a higher or larger reality.
What is puberty?
Puberty is the start of adolescence, which brings physical and emotional changes. This is the
time when males and females are physically able to reproduce. During this period, secondary sex
characteristics begin developing. These characteristics include body hair, and development of
breasts in females and muscles in males.
Changes in the body vary and this means that we don t experience the exact changes that
another individual had experience. it is how our body reacts to those changes that make it unique for
every one of us.
Male Body
1. Height increases with an average of 4.1 inches
2. Weight increases due to increased muscle development
3. Growth of body hair in pubic area, underarms, face and more on legs
4. Muscles become stronger
5. Vocal cords get thicker: longer and deepens
6. Increased number of red blood cells
7. More active sweat and oil glands, and body odor changes
8. Acne can develop
9. some develop Small and temporary breast tissues
10. Reproductive system begins to work
Physical Changes
Every individual goes through the changes of puberty at his/her own rate. Some may
experience the changes sooner or later than the others. The growth pattern for girls is a little
different from the growth pattern for boys. Girls are usually taller than boys around the age of 11 or
12. Then growth in height slows down for most girls while this speeds up for many adolescent boys.
Within a few years, boys in general become taller than girls. This difference may cause
uncomfortable feelings. Boys may also feel embarrassed when their voice “cracks” because of the
growth of their larynx. This is part of growing up.
Remember, every teenager experiences these changes. These are normal experiences and
events in everybody’s life so there is no reason to worry and feel uncomfortable about it. Eventually,
these awkward feelings will disappear as teens adjust to the changes in their growth and
development.
Here are some of the physical changes affect the adolescents
1. They frequently sleep longer.
2. They may be clumsier because of growth spurts.
3. Girls may become overly sensitive about their weight.
4. They may be self-conscious because they are not physically developing at the same rate
with their peers.
Mental Changes
As adolescents mature, there are mental changes, that take place during the adolescent
stage. They learn to look beyond themselves and understand others' Many would develop new
interests and begin to focus on career goals. Logical reasoning. develops late in the adolescent
stage where adolescents start to solve more complicated problems. Exploring new ways of thinking,
reasoning decisions enhances them to think more flexibly and help in making later choices.
Here are some of the physical changes affect the adolescents
1. They demonstrate a heightened level of consciousness.
2. They tend to become very cause-oriented.
3. They tend to exhibit a "justice" orientation.
4. They exhibit “it can happen to me" syndrome also known as "personal fable."
Emotional changes
Many adolescents feel awkward during this stage of their life. They feel more sensitive about
many things including what others will say about them. They are very conscious about what they
consider as their "defects." Sometimes, they feel that others do not understand them.
This difficulty in communicating thoughts and feelings is a normal part of development. Love
and support from family and friends help the adolescents in dealing with these emotional changes.
Social Changes
During the developmental stage of adolescents, they begin to embrace opinions oi people
who are influential to their lives into their own preferences, their likes and dislikes. An adolescent
must realize who he or she is and be able to establish goals and what he or she wants to do with his
or her lives. Those who have secure identities know how to fit in their environment.
Health appraisal refers to a series of procedure to assess or determine the health status of
the students. These include the use of teacher's observations, screening tests, health histories or
medical records, medical and dental inspections, and psychological tests. Success of the health
appraisal procedures is dependent upon the collaborative effort of parents, teachers, physicians,
dentists, health educators, nurses, and others in the school program.
A health examination should provide a history of the health status of the child and identify any
health problems that the child might have. A health history is usually obtained prior to the
examination. These include:
1. History of health problems
2. Growth and development
3. Diseases
4. Allergies
5. Nutritional status
6. Immunization
7. Other factors related to the child
Usually health history also includes family health records such as information on who have
diseases like cancer, diabetes, heart diseases, arid chronic conditions, A physician always conducts
health examination.
Health Screening
The following are parts of health screening.
1. Physical growth and development - measure of height and weight; these measurements
are helpful in determining if normal physiological growth patterns are occurring.
2. Vision screening is an effective school endeavor because deviations from normal can be
identified and refractive errors can be corrected. The Snellen chart is the commonly used, the
least expensive, and the easiest to perform; and a remarkably high degree of success in
identifying students having vision problems using this procedure.
3. Hearing screening - the ability to hear sound determines how well one can Communicate
within the environment. A child who has even minor hearing problems can develop speech
problems. Hearing screening is performed with a pure-tone audiometer, which is the most
reliable procedure for detection of hearing loss.
4. Screening for scoliosis - Scoliosis is a familiar problem during the rapid growth in late
childhood to early teenage years. Girls have more chances of acquiring it than boys; and it
can be acquired genetically. Some indications are having disproportionate shoulders and
hips. Scoliosis screening will identify students who have spinal irregularities that would
worsen body's movement and stamina and most likely lead to back pains and other body
parts. Early detection and intervention may avert scoliosis from developing. into conditions
that may impede comfortable movements or activities.
Health concerns/problems brought about by changes during adolescence should be dealt with
properly to prevent negative consequences. Since many of these can be prevented, you should
learn coping skills/self- management skills to face these challenges positively.
Coping skills – this will help you deal with sad, difficult and stressful situations /experiences in
your lives. If you have developed coping skills, you can prevent serious problems resulting from
these experiences.
There are several coping techniques you can use in ordinary life situations. Some are very
useful; some are not. Some can help you for a short time only but some can help you for a long time.
Study the following coping techniques and see how you can practice them:
Avoidance Strategies (These are acceptable for a short-term, so do not exclude other ways of
coping.):
