LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 7

Content Standard: Performance Standard:

The learners demonstrate an The learners shall be able to employ
understanding of organisms interacting appropriate techniques using the
with each other and with their compound microscope to gather data
environment to survive. about very small objects.

I. Learning Competency
 S7LT-IIi-11: Explain and understand energy transfer in the ecosystem

II. Objectives:
1. Differentiate food chain from food web.
2. Recognize the importance of energy transfer in the ecosystem.
3. Explain the importance of all the factors of the ecosystem.
4. Understand the value of cooperation and inductive reasoning.

III. Learning Content

a. Topic : Energy Transfer in the Ecosystem
b. Reference : Science Learner’s Material, pp. 124-129
c. Materials : Chalk and Board, PowerPoint Presentation, Pictures of organism

IV. Learning Procedure

A. Preliminary Activities
 Prayer
 Greetings
 PEACE CHECK (Classroom Rules and Regulations)
 Checking of attendance
 Review
 The students will answer the following questions:
 What was the last topic that we have discussed?
 What is the difference between biotic and abiotic factors of the
ecosystem?
 What are the types of symbiotic relationship? Give example of each
type.

B. Motivation
 The teacher will show a video clip about Lion King. After watching the video clip,
the student will answer the question: “What does mufasa mean when he says that
we are all connected in a circle of life?”. In this task, the teacher will check the
comprehension of the students. She will encourage them to give their own ideas.

C. Lesson Proper
1. Activity
 The students will play music while passing a small ball. Once the music stops, the
student who holds the ball will be given a picture of an organism and he or she
needs to act and describe the characteristic of that organism. After that, all of the
students who got the pictures will go in front and do the next activity. In their next
activity, they will arrange themselves to show who eats whom. The following are the
organisms:
- killer whale
- cod fish
- krill shrimp
- algae
- leopard seal
 The students will explain also why they arrange the organisms in that order.

2. Analysis
 After arranging the organisms in their proper order, the students will answer the
following questions:
a. What is the source of energy in the ecosystem?
b. What might happen to the other organisms if algae were removed from this
group?
c. What might happen if the killer whales were removed?
d. Are there any organisms in this group that eat more than one kind of food?
 The answers of the students to these questions will lead to the discussion about
the energy transfer in the ecosystem.

3. Abstraction
 The teacher will explain the following concepts:
 Energy flows in the ecosystem in a one-way path. The radiant energy from
the sun is converted to chemical energy of food by plants. This is transferred
to a series of consumers in a food chain. As energy is transferred from
producer to consumers, less energy is received. The energy is used by the
organism and some is released as heat.
 Food webs are interconnected food chains and show the feeding
relationships in an ecosystem.
 10% of the energy is decreased as organisms go up of the energy pyramid.
(Teacher will show this in a mathematical computation)
 Sun is the major source of energy in the ecosystem.
 Plants are always considered as the producers because they are capable of
making their own food in the process of photosynthesis.
 Humans and animals are examples of consumers while bacteria are the
decomposers.
 All of the factors of the ecosystem are important because they have different
roles to do.

4. Application

 The students will be grouped into three. Each group will show and explain the
importance of all the factors of the ecosystem and how they can preserve them.
Their presentation should be in a creative way. They will apply in their presentation
what they have learned in MAPEH and AP about the arts of the different ethnic
groups in the Philippines. Their performance can be in the form of singing,
dancing, acting or the combination of all of them.
 The performance of the students will be graded using the rubric below.

V. Evaluation
 The students will do the following task:
Direction: Identify the term being described in each number.
1. The main source of energy in the ecosystem.
 Sun
2. The transfer of energy from the sun to producer and to the primary and higher order
consumers
 Food chain
3. Consumers that eat both plants and animals
 Omnivores
4. It is the food making process by plants.
 Photosynthesis
5. Interconnected food chains that also show feeding relationships in the ecosystem
 Food Web

VI. Assignment

 Cut a picture showing energy transfer and paste it in your notebook. Explain in at least
three sentences.
