Learning
Proves inequalities in a triangle Code: M8GE-IVc-1
Competency/ies:

Theorems Useful in Proving Inequalities in a Triangle:

 Triangle Inequality Theorem 1 ( Aa→ Ss ) Unequal Sides Theorem

Key Concepts/ If one side of a triangle is longer than the second, then the angle opposite the
understandings to longer side is larger than the angle opposite the second side.
be developed:  Triangle Inequality Theorem 2 ( Ss → Aa ) Unequal Angles Theorem
If one angle of a triangle is larger than the second angle, then the side opposite the
larger angle is longer than the side opposite the second angle.

ASK:
1. In ∆ FOX, which angle is opposite to FO ? How about OX ?? Ans. ∠ X , ∠ F
2. What can you say about the measures of ∠ F and ∠ X ? Why?
Ans. ∠ F and ∠ X are congruent because the sides opposite them are congruent.
3. In ∆ BAT,what can you conclude about the measures of ∠ B and ∠ T Why?
Ans. The measures of ∠ B and ∠ T are not congruent since the sides opposite
them are not congruent.
4. What other conclusion can you make in relation to ∠ B and ∠ T ?
Ans. m ∠ T >m ∠ B

B. ANALYSIS

1. Ask a student to state the Unequal Sides Theorem.

(If one side of a triangle is longer than the second, then the angle opposite the longer
side is larger than the angle opposite the second side.)
2. Provide example in proving unequal sides theorem.

Given: ∆ HAT; HT > HA

Prove: m∠A ¿ m∠ T

2. HA≃ HS 2. Definition of Congruent Segments
3. ∠ 1 ≅ ∠ 2 3. Definition of Isosceles Triangle Theorem
4. m ∠ 1=m∠ 2 4. Definition of Congruent Angles
5. m ∠ A=m ∠ 2+m∠ 3 5. Angle Addition Postulate
6. m ∠ A >m∠ 2 6. If a=b+ c and c >0 , then a> b.
7. m ∠ A >m∠ 1 7. Law of Substitution
8. m ∠ A >m∠ T 8. Definition of Exterior Angle Theorem
9. m ∠ A >m∠ T 9. Transitive Property of Inequality

3. Ask a volunteer to state the unequal angles theorem.

(If one angle of a triangle is larger than the second angle, then the side opposite the
larger angle is longer than the side opposite the second angle.)
4. Consider the figure below.

Given: ∆ HIT with m ∠ T >m ∠ I

Prove: HI > HT
Proof:

Using an indirect proof.

Assume temporarily that HI ≯ HT . Then either HI ¿ HT or HI ¿ HT .

Case 1 : If HI ¿ HT , then m ∠ T=m∠ I
Case 2: If HI ¿ HT , then m ∠ T <m ∠ I by Unequal Sides Theorem
In either case there is a contradiction of the given fact that m ∠ T >m ∠ I and the
assumption that HI ≯ HT must be false. It follows that HI ¿ HT .
C. ABSTRACTION

1. Do you know that a corollary follows the unequal angles theorem?

2. State the theorem.
The perpendicular segment from a point to a line is the shortest segment from the
point to a line.
3. Consider the figure below.
a. Using the corollary, what conclusions can you make?
b. Which side is the shortest? longest?
