At the end of the lesson 80% of the learners should be able to:
1. identify the stage elements of Kabuki play through discussion;
2. draw a Kabuki inspired face using the colors of expression in Kabuki makeup;
3. exhibit cooperation in participating the activity in Kabuki of Japan.

C. Motivation

ACTIVITY

All right, today we will have another topic


to be discussed.

But before we discuss our next topic I have


here some pictures and you will be telling
me what kind of emotion the picture is
conveying. Is the instruction clear? Yes sir

ANALYSIS

What’s the emotion of the first picture?

Very well. Happy emotion

How can you tell that it is happy emotion?

All right. The mask is smiling and have happy eyes

Great idea. Because of its angry face and the color of


the picture is on fire.
How about our third picture?

Correct.
Its lonely or sorrowful.
For the fourth picture?

How can you tell that it is lonely? It’s also sorrowful sir
That’s right. Because of the eyes. It has tears.
Now where do you think these masks came
from? Have you seen these masks before?
Yes sir it is form Japanese Theater Kabuki.

So, today we will discuss Kabuki of Japan.

ABSTRACTION

Kabuki is traditional Japanese drama only


performed by male actors. Kabuki means
“act dissolutely” before, later interpreted
the word “ka” for song, “bu” for dance, and
“ki” for art/skill and is also translated as
“the art of singing dancing.”

Now what are the Stage Features of


Kabuki? Hanamichi, Kogakudo, Mawaro butal,
Suppon, Hanamicho.

Hanamichi – a flower path/walkway


extending to audience which entrances and
exits are made.

Kogakudo – kabuki with stages both in


front of audience and along the sides.

Mawaro butal – the interior of the theater


contains revolving stage.

Suppon – a platform that rises from below


the stage.

Hanamicho – a walkway cutting through


audience seat area connecting the stage
with the back of theater.

Then what are the Three Main Categories


of Kabuki Play?

That’s right. Jidaimono, Sewamono, and Shosagoto

What is Jidaimono?

period of stories set within the context of

by painting their faces and adding lines in
red, black, or blue. Aragoto uses red and
blue while Onna-gata has minimal paint.

Oshiroi – is a white base makeup made in


Rice powder.

Kumadori- enhances facial lines producing


dramatic character.

Meaning of Colors

Red – passion, heroism, righteousness, and .


positive traits
Pink – youthful joy
Light blue – even temper
Pale green – peacefulness
Blue or black – Villainy, jealousy, and
negative traits

Green – for supernatural


Purple - nobility

What are the different Acts in kabuki?

That’s correct. Jo, Ha, and Kyu

Then what are they?

Jo is the slow opening which introduces the


characters and the plot.

Ha – speeds the events up culminating

Kyu – a short quick and satisfying


Kabuki Props – have symbolic meaning. conclusion.
Fans symbolizes wind, a sword, tobacco
pipe, waves or food.

Costumes – Female wears kimono and obi


while pleated hakuma trousers are worn by
characters of sexes.

Wigs – important accessories made of


human or horse hair, bear fur, or yak-tail
hair.
