D. ABSTRACT (25 minutes)

 Teacher will discuss the imagery and its types.

Yes, that’s right. Those words will have a big part to the topic for today. So, let me introduce
to you the IMAGERY.

Imagery is a form of figurative/implied language that uses objects, actions and ideas in a such
way that appeals to the senses. It is a literary device used in poetry, novels, and other writing
that uses vivid descriptions that appeals to readers senses to create an image or idea in their
head. Though language, imagery does not only paint a picture but aims to portray the
sensational and emotional experience within text.

So, it means Imagery is important to writing especially to poem, novels and etc., because of
the descriptive details it provides that makes your writing clear that helps to generate a
specific mood or emotion.

Here is an example of how adding imagery enhances your writing.

Original sentence: She drank water on a hot day.

Added imagery: The cool, refreshing water quenched her thirst as the scorching sun radiated
on her.

There are five basic types of imageries :

• Visual imagery
• Auditory imagery
• Olfactory imagery
• Gustatory imagery
• Tactile imagery

Since, imagery appeals to the senses and ability to sense of having “pictures” in the mind.
Such images may be memories of earlier visual experiences or syntheses produced by the
imagination. The five basic types of imageries centered in sensory impression.

First is Visual Imagery. Visual Imagery appeals to sense of sight. It is something that is
concrete and can be seen. Visual imagery purpose is to describe what we see.

For Example :
It was dark and dim in the forest.

As you notice, the example shows that the person saw that the forest have a dark and dim
light. Or maybe the person give the example to prove that when we say forest the first thing
you would imagine is the place having dim and dark lights. So it means that visual imagery
indeed describe what we see.

Do you get it, class?

So, let move on, the second is Auditory Imagery. Auditory Imagery appeals to the sense of
hearing. It is something that you can hear through your mind’s ears. It is used to explain
things, ideas and actions using sounds that appeal to our sense of hearing. It is intended to
invoke up sound images in the minds of the readers. In literature, it means to use words and
literary devices in a way that they make readers experience sounds when reading poetry or
prose.
For Example:
She awoke to the chirping of birds and the soft whisper of a breeze as it passed through the
tree outside her window.

The example shows that Auditory imagery describes sounds, from shrill cries to whispering
winds. Even the subtlest of sounds can help set the scene and place readers right in the
middle of the action.

Class can you follow?

Next is, Olfactory Imagery. When we say Olfactory Imagery it appeals to the sense of smell. In
literature, it means to use words and literary devices in a way that they make reader
experience the fragrance when reading.

For Example :
She walked into the abandoned home and caught the scent of mothballs.

You can notice in the example the word scent of mothballs. These phrase appeals to the
sense of smell.

Next is Gustatory imagery.

When we say Gustatory Imagery it appeals to the sense of taste. It is words or pictures that
make someone think of food or taste.

For example:
The salty, sweet flavour of salt water taffy was Carrie's very favorite thing about going to the
beach for summer vacation.

Last is, Tactile imagery

When we say Tactile Imagery it appeals to the sense of touch. When writers use tactile
imagery, they are describing something by focusing on the aspects that the reader could feel,
or touch.

For Example :
The soft velvety feel of silk and satin caressed my skin.

The author intends to give more details about the silk which appeals to the sense of touch.

Do you understand, class?
