ASSIGNMENT 1 - 20% (GROUP)

RASTER REGISTRATION AND MAP DIGITISING
(GIS DATABASE DEVELOPMENT)

Commencement Date : 4 April 2024

Submission Date : 18 April 2024

STUDENT ID :

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES (CLO)

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
1. Prepare in group geospatial database systems related to town planning practices. (A4)

ASSESSMENT TASK
• Written Report (20%)

Objectives:
The objective of this assignment is to familiarise the students with a GIS database development which include:
1. Obtaining spatial data from a raster image.
2. Registering the raster image.
3. Digitising works on the raster image
4. Constructing GIS database layers (based on the developed ER-diagram – database entities).
5. Producing GIS output (map) working in a layout window.

Instructions:
1. This is a GROUP work.
2. You will be supplied with a raster image (with a coordinate system).
3. You can view the image before selecting one image of your choice.
4. You are required to register and digitise the raster image.
5. You are required to prepare a report (A4 size) and to submit together with a GIS map (A3 size).
6. Do follow other additional instructions given out by your lecturers.

Steps to do include, but not limited to the followings:

• Open MapInfo software.
• Select the supplied JPEG image (Mal.jpg) from within MapInfo.
• Make sure you choose ‘Raster Image’ in the Files of Type to display the image.
• Choose Register. Click on Projection, Check Unit (Decimal degree)
• Under “Category” choose Malaysian Coordinate Systems
• Under “Category Members” choose Malaysian RSO Kertau Datum
• Click OK.

Set the map projection before digitising. For MapInfo Pro 2021 and below, please use the following
Projection.
• Select Category: Category Members
• Example: Category: Malaysia RSO)
• Select Category Members: Peninsular Malaysia
• Get the FOUR (4) coordinates (x, y) before you start to register your map.
• Click OK.

• Get at least Four (4) coordinates (x, y) as accurate as possible, on the map.
• Use the Pick from Map option to pick and record your coordinates in the Edit Control Point box. Once done,
Click OK. Your first coordinate will be recorded in the Image Registration box.
• Click Add icon on the right side of the Image Registration box and repeat the process, until you obtained all
four coordinates (at least).
• Make sure your RMS error is kept to a minimum (below 10).
• Once done, Click OK. You now have registered the image as a raster map.
• Choose Table.New Table. Create the table structure (name the Fieldname, type, width for each layer).
• Once done, click OK. You now have a Map Layer to draw the Map feature on.

• Start digitising the spatial information on the map. Use a spatial feature for each map layer
(Line/polyline/polygon or symbols).
• Insert the attribute information.

Producing a Layout
• Using the Layout Display/ produce your map in A3 size paper (you need to set the paper to A3), and it
should come with map title, north arrow, legends labels and scale.
• Once done go to Home Tab, choose Create PDF. Save your file in Pdf for submission.
• Prepare a short report (A4 size) comprising a compilation of print screen / Snip of all the tasks.
• Print your final Map.
• Creativity and innovation are more appreciated and will get higher marks.

Note: Submission will be in digital copy (pdf. format).
