Chandrayaan-3: India's Moon Landing Triumph
India's third mission to the Moon, named Chandrayaan-3, has marked an epoch in the
history of space exploration. This mission, successfully landing on the lunar surface on August
23, 2023, has not only demonstrated the country's technological prowess but also opened
avenues for new discoveries about our celestial neighbor. This article will delve into the success
of Chandrayaan-3, the techniques used, and its purpose.
The Success of Chandrayaan-3

The Journey to Success

Chandrayaan-3's journey to the moon was a meticulously planned endeavor, brimming with
intricate details and precision. It was a mission that followed the Chandrayaan-2's unfortunate
setback, where the lander Vikram failed to make a soft landing. However, learning from the past
mistakes, the scientists at Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) devised a foolproof plan
for Chandrayaan-3.
The mission was launched on the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV), a reliable
workhorse of ISRO. After a journey of approximately 384,400 kilometers, Chandrayaan-3
successfully landed on the moon's surface, a feat that was celebrated not just in India, but across
the globe.
Key Achievements
Chandrayaan-3's success signifies a landmark achievement for India's space program. It
demonstrated India's ability to execute complex missions and land a spacecraft on an
extraterrestrial body. This success also put India in an elite club of nations that have managed to
land on the moon successfully, a testament to the country's technological advancements.
Techniques Used in Chandrayaan-3
The Landing Technique
The most significant technical challenge faced during the mission was the lunar soft landing.
Unlike Chandrayaan-2, where the lander lost contact with ISRO during the final stages,
Chandrayaan-3 was equipped with a more advanced and robust landing mechanism.
The lander used a technique known as the "Hopping Method'. In this approach, the lander
initially touches the lunar surface at a relatively high velocity. It then takes a small hop and lands
back on the lunar surface at a much slower speed, ensuring a successful soft landing.
The Propulsion System The mission also employed a highly efficient propulsion system. This
system was used to decelerate
the spacecraft as it descended towards the lunar surface and allowed for a controlled landing.
