5. PROCEDURE

Construction procedure for steel piles:

Site levelling& clearance → Unloading and stacking→ Locating the points→ Driving Pile
→Adjustment/repairing/replace (if existing) → Completion

5.1 Site Levelling & Clearance

If the ground slope after site levelling is more than 3%, further site levelling works will be
taken to make the slope meet the requirements (slople≤3%). If there are some grubbing, some stone
or other debris on site, some clearance measures will be taken.

5.2 Unloading and Stacking

Before the installation of steel piles, subcontractor should plan in advance which area will be
constructed with steel piles. Steel piles will be moved from storage area to site and stack at specified
place that is near the construction area.
More attentions shall be taken to avoid any likely damages during shifting of steel piles. Visual
inspection shall be applied to check the deformation of piles prior to driving piles. If the steel piles
have some damage or deformation, they should be corrected and rectified. The special tools (forklift
or crane with steel chain or other equipment) will be used for unloading.

5.3 Locating the Points

To exactly locate the point of steel piles, experienced survey engineers with sophisticated
surveying equipment including GPS and total stations shall be put into the construction.
Before or after setting out, steel piles can be shifted and placed near the location of piles in a
single line. The exact location of piles shall be marked with the help of total station/GPS and other
tools according to the spacing and coordinates given in drawings.
Considering the complexity for locating the piles, we will use lime powder, steel/wood rod to
make a point mark for coordinate of steel pile (just like the picture as follow), and color rope or
other tools will be applied to confirm the direction of steel piles.

In consideration of the slope (slople≤3%) of the ground after site levelling and ensuring the
penetration depth of steel piles, some measuring principles and procedures will be specified as
follows (it’s suitable for that one array has 16 piles):
(1) Step I: Mark the coordinates of each pile in one array;
(2) Step II: Use levelling instrument to roughly judge the slope (from north to south/from south
to north);
(3) Step III: According to the result of Step II, if the slope gradually decreases from south to
north and slope is ≤3% (see Fig 01), the penetration depth of back piles in one array shall be ensured
as shown in the drawing; if the slope gradually increases from south to north and slope is ≤3% (see
Fig 02), the penetration depth of front piles in one array shall be ensured as shown in the drawing;

Fig 01: Side View (slope is from north to south) Fig 02: Side View (slope is from south to north)
(4) Step IV: Measure the ground elevation at the location of three piles (the 1st pile, the 4th pile
and the 8th pile) in front row or back row, which is decided by Step III. The ground elevation is
expressed as G1-1, G1-4 and G1-8 for back row piles or G2-1, G2-4 and G2-8 for front row piles, which
are shown in Fig 03~06.
(5) Step V: In order to facilitate the construction of driving piles, some simplified rules will be
used as follows, and take ensuring the penetration depth of the back row pile for example, i.e. the
slope gradually decreases from south to north.
① If |G1-1-G1-8|≤10cm, and the slope is raised or lowered in one direction, the pile at the lowest
of the ground will be used as control pile, which will be driven to the design depth as per the drawing,
top elevation of other piles in the same row will be the same as the control pile. The top elevation
of front row pile will be calculated as per Fig 01.
② If 10cm<|G1-1-G1-8|≤20cm, and the slope is raised or lowered in one direction, the 4th pile
in back row will be used as control pile, which will be driven to the design depth as per the drawing,

top elevation of other piles in the same row will be the same as the control pile. The top elevation
of front row pile will be calculated as per Fig 01.
③ If |G1-1-G1-8|>20cm, and the slope is raised or lowered in one direction, the 1st pile and the
8th pile in back row will be used as control piles, which will be driven to the design depth as per the
drawing, top elevation of other piles in the same row will be calculated according to the top elevation
of the control piles. If the slope gradually decreases from west to east, the calculation formula is |
𝑛−1
L1-n = L1-1 − |L1-1 − L1-8| (𝑛 ∈ (1~8)). If the slope gradually increases from west to east, the
7
𝑛−1
calculation formula is | L1-n = L1-1 + |L1-8 − L1-1| (𝑛 ∈ (1~8)).
7

All the coordinates, all top elevation and some necessary ground elevation should be recorded.
(6) Step VI: As to ensuring the penetration depth of the front row pile, i.e. the slope gradually
increases from south to north, all the measuring method and calculation can refer to Step I ~Step V.
(7) Step VII: For one array without 16 piles, all the measuring method and calculation also can
refer to Step I ~Step VI.
(8) Step VIII: For the array of Agriculture Area and Testing Area, all the measuring method
and calculation also can refer to the relevant detailed drawings and Step I ~Step VII.

5.4 Driving piles
Before driving piles, subcontractor should check whether equipment, materials and workers
are ready for construction, including ①ramming machine (shown in the picture below) has arrived
at specified location, ②steel piles has already been put around the exact location of each pile
where we will start the piling work, ③the worker has already held the pile at the coordinate of
steel pile and pile deviation shall be confirmed by inclination meter, ④the surveyor has set up the
measuring instrument in the right place.

Ramming Machine
When start driving pile, each pile shall be continuously pressed into the ground until reaching
design depth or encountering underground undiscovered boulders/big stone. The site supervisor
of subcontractor shall inform the EPC’s engineer without delay if something unexpected happens
during piling, such as ①the steel pile can’t be driven into the ground any more depth but it doesn’t
reach the design depth, ②the steel pile is deformed or damaged, ③the steel pile is so much easily
driven into the soil without overcoming any resistance from the soil, ④rock exists on or near the
ground surface.
During driving pile, site surveyor shall use level meter or total station to control the top
elevation of steel pile with reference to benchmark or temporary control point.
Site supervisors of subcontractor shall pay more attention to driving pile so that they can
control the quality of piling construction. Meanwhile, subcontractor should provide all facilities
to EPC/OE/the owner so that they can check and control the quality of the project.

When a group of pile arrays is being completed, QA/QC engineer or site engineer should
recheck the construction quality through random sampling, the following requirements shall be
met:
a) The exposed part of the piles shall be in good condition without damage or distortion.
b) The penetration depth of steel pile should be in accord with the design depth as far as
possible.
c) The ramming machine shall be in good condition and operated correctly.
d) Pile top elevation shall be confirmed by the level meter or total station while pile verticality
shall be confirmed by inclination meter within permitted tolerance.
e) The front or back row of piles in each small array should be kept in a straight line, which
can be checked by rope or other reasonable method.

5.5 Driving sequence

Steel piles shall be driven in an approved sequence to minimise the detrimental effects, the
sequence of construction is in the figure below.

Piling Sequence

5.6 Repair or replace the deformed/damaged pile

If the deformation/damage of steel piles influence the installation and stability of mounting
structure system, it should be repaired with proper method. If the steel pile with deformation /
damage can’t be repaired, it should be replaced with new pile.
If the galvanized paint on the pile surface is damaged due to improper construction or
transportation, it should be treated with antirust paint.

5.7 Pile-driving on difficult subsoil or soft soil

All abnormal pile positions (reference to 5.4 something unexpected) must be clearly
identified and documented in the relevant drawing or other files.
If pile-driving operations are impeded by unexpected obstacles (blocks, solid rock or hard

soil) on the site, or the piles are driven into soft/loose soil that can’t provide enough bearing
capacity, the following procedures must be implemented:
(1) Pre-drill to the design depth as per the drawing
(2) Clear the borehole. Alternatively, the remaining cuttings should be compacted.
(3) The borehole should be filled in layers with concrete as per the drawing and then
compacted with vibrator.
(4) The steel pile should be driven without delay through ramming machine.
(5) Top elevation of the piles should be controlled by level meter or total station during piling.
(6) The concrete pile tip will be cured with proper method if necessary.

5.8 Testing and Deviation

(1) Pullout Test

All design load has already shown in the sheet below, which is provided by the manufacture
of steel pile and mounting structure system.
