ABSTRACT

This summer, I completed an internship at Nutanvij Electrical, a prominent electrical contracting

company with locations in Surat, Ankleshwar, and Valsad. My internship was based in Surat,
where I gained valuable hands-on experience through on-site training.

During my internship, I was assigned to two main sites: Rajlaxmi and BRC. At these sites, I had
the opportunity to observe and participate in the installation of various electrical panels, including
PCC (Power Control Center), APFC (Automatic Power Factor Correction), feeder panels, and
RMU (Ring Main Unit) panels.

This internship provided me with a comprehensive understanding of how electrical contracting

companies operate. I learned about the different types of electrical panels. Overall, this experience
was instrumental in enhancing my knowledge of the electrical contracting industry and its various
aspects.

1.1.4 Types of Charging

AC "Slow" Charging: -
 Slow AC charging is the most common method of charging electric vehicles. An
EVSE supplies AC current to the vehicle’s on board charger which in turn
converts the AC power to DC allowing the battery to be charged.
 Under AC Charging there are 2 categories of charging Normal AC charging As
mentioned above, electric 2-wheelers, 3-wheelers and 4-wheeler vehicles in India
has on-board charger that charge at rate of around 2.5kW to 3kW.
 These AC 2.5KW or 3KW Chargers could fast charge a 2-wheeler (for a battery
with an energy density of 2KWh) in an hour’s time; 4-wheeler or larger vehicles
with batteries of 12 KWh or more will charged in five to six hour.
 Global electric cars like the Nissan Leaf or the Tesla have on board chargers with
higher power ratings. This enables AC charging at a faster rate, from 7.7 kw to
22 kw.

Gujarat Technological University 4 L D College of Engineering

200004 Company Overview

Fast DC charging

 In this method of charging, DC current is sent to the electric car's battery directly
via the DC charge port.
 Fast charging’s faster charge rate (usually 50 kilowatts or more outside India) can
supply 100 or more km's of range per hour of charging. A significant fast
charging network available should make electric cars more attractive than
otherwise, and lead to higher adoption rates.
 Voltage rating at which fast charging has to be carried out 48V/72V for Indian
electric cars like the Mahindra e2o Plus P8, Mahindra e-Verito and upcoming
Tata electric cars Up to 750V or even higher used by global electric cars like
Nissan Leaf.

4.2 Problem and Weakness of Current Sysem

Electric Vehicle charging station are installed at various places across the
india.Mainly,it is on highways and nearby cities. Electric Vehicle charging station
needed power supply from grid in order to provide charging to the EV cars and EV bike.
Sometimes due to the power cut out and Power shortage Customer has to face the issue
to charged their EV cars and bike.

Some Company EVCS system is so much complicated that normal public/ customer
won’t understand any steps to charge their EVs means there is lack of awareness
regarding the EVCS. Also ,People are not very much aware about the EVCS working and
they repeatedly tap the screen and misusing the machine /public Electric vehicle
infrastructures.

Main weakness is that during power cut out there is no back up system provided to charge
the EVs.There is need of Backup power to the electric Vehicle charging station and its
infrastructure.

4.4 Proposed System

The proposed topology mainly consists of a charging station powered by the grid as well
as the storage integrated solar PV system and a controller. The grid dependency of the
charging station is reduced by using a renewable energy source (Solar PV) and for
improving the system reliability a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is incorporated.
The control technique helps to reduce the charging impact on the grid by controlling the
charging current as per the system conditions. To make the EV Charging Station (EVCS)
more customized, three different options (Quick, Green and Budget) for charging are
given such that the customer is free to choose one among them according to his
requirement. The cost of charging will vary according to the selected mode of charging.
This Proposed system will be going to boost the Charging services of CZ EVCS. Soon,
EVCS can be access via RFID card.

5.1 SYSTEM DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

Gujarat Technological University 25 L D College of Engineering

200004 System Design

5.1.1 CMS Modules and its Specification

CMS is very important for tracking the real time status of all the chargers Charge+Zone
have installed. This is the place where you can check everything regarding the charger.

This is the dashboard of CMS, in the dashboard one can see different charts and
information like how many users of EV are there, total number of EV charged in any
duration of time, total units consumption etc. there is a side navigation bar to switch to
different modules from dashboard. Chargespot Dashboard contains information like
number of chargers which are online, in use, not available. It contains list of all chargers
of the company.

Gujarat Technological University 26 L D College of Engineering

200004 System Design

5.2 System Protocols

5.2.1 OCPP

 The Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) is an application protocol for

communication between Electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and a
central management system, also known as a charging station network,
similar to cell phones and cell phone networks.

 Charging station owners, or hosts, are less vulnerable to individual system

suppliers – if a charging station manufacturer ceased to exist, the host
could switch to another OCPP-based network. Giving charging station
customers choice and flexibility to use any network on any charge station
would, through market forces, encourage charging station manufacturers
and network providers to compete on price, service, product features, and
innovation – all of which encourages demand by charge station owners.

Gujarat Technological University 27 L D College of Engineering

200004 System Design

 The result is a significant benefit to EV drivers as the charging station

infrastructure expands. OCPP also makes it easier to create a large-scale,
visible network that uses a range of different charging stations since there
is a requirement for only one operating system. Proponents of OCPP also
cite a reduction in development costs since software designed to provide
additional functionality would only need to be developed once and not
several times to fit with each individual operating system. Finally, OCPP
will ease interoperability across the United States, and elsewhere, and
minimize remedial work on systems
 OCPP is the major part of CMS and Application. Because it defines that
how chargespot and server communicate.

5.2.2 OCPI:

 The Open Charge Point Interface protocol (OCPI) facilitates

communication between E-Mobility Service Providers and Charge Point
Operators, who administer charging stations for electric vehicle owners.
This protocol is open source and self-contained. It can be used both
unilaterally and in conjunction with roaming hubs. Everyone is welcome
to contribute to the development of OCPI.
 A mature EV market requires a single communication infrastructure that
connects all market participants in the EV and energy sectors. New,
integrated, and successful business models that allow flexibility and
supply continuity can be developed. enhancing mobility services
Regardless of borders, operators, or equipment, EV drivers can enjoy a
great user experience. Prices, tariffs, locations, availability, and a single
invoice should all be transparently available in real time.

200004 Site Work Execution

Testing of EV Charger

Recently, I visited our 60kw EV charging station at Karjan location where I tested the electric
charger and new firmware installed by site engineer.

In that location, I checked the charger by opening it, then checked the connections between
electrical parts and the following protection equipment.

 MCCB(Molded case circuit breaker),

 Surge protection device(SPD),
 MCB(Miniature circuit breaker),
 Insulation resistance tester,
 HRC fuse etc.

After inspection and testing of this charger, I detected following problems related to software
and hardware,

 Delay in receiving OTP,

 Touch screen got stuck during typing,
 Only one push button for both CCS-2 charging gun,
 Difficult to unlocking the gun because of inner hard push button locking system
 Slot Booking problem for EV charging station

After facing this problem, I noted it and made a report on it and sent it to company’s
maintenance team and R&D to solve this problem.

There, I also promoted charge+zone and made people aware of its future benefits, as well
as teaching them how to use the mobile charge+zone application.

200004 Site Work Execution

6.2 Site Survey

As part of Site Survey, I will visit the client's location and survey the site where the EV
charging station will be installed.

There, I have to Check several things which are ;

 Space required for EVCS

 Discoms Connection
 Transformer ratings
 Location suitable for EVCS
 Charger information
 Earthing Feasibility
 Charger foundation required or not
 Network connectivity

After filling all the above detail, I have to draw a Hand Sketch Layout of Site and send it to
