Development of the
Determining importance in reading means focusing on what is important in the text we listened or

read. As proficient readers or listeners, we engage in that process continually while reading or listening. We
filter information and organize our thinking around the big ideas. Determining importance allows us to move
through a text coherently, developing a line of thinking that helps our reading make sense.

Identifying the Main Idea


The main idea or big idea is the central point or thought the author wants to communicate to readers.

The main idea answers the question, “What does the author want me to know about the topic?” or “What is the author teaching
me?” Often the author states the main idea in a single sentence. It may appear at the
beginning, in the middle, or at the end.

The sentence that represents the main idea is called the topic sentence. The supporting ideas or supporting details are the more focused
arguments that support the main ideas. They have a clear and direct connection with the main ideas. They are backed-up by evidence.

Example:
2020 is the year of catastrophes, with the Taal eruption, the COVID-19 pandemic, and now our typhoon season. After the devastation of
Typhoon Quinta, then came Rolly, one of the strongest storms to have made landfall on record. Then, just when we thought we had enough
of typhoons, several more came. We are now experiencing the full impact of Ulysses – and this may not be the last typhoon we have this
year.

A NEWS FLASH is a single item of important news that is aired separately and often interrupts other programs.
A WEATHER REPORT is usually a part of an entire news program that tells and foretells weather conditions on a specific area.
An INTERNET-BASED PROGRAM is a program that is informative and can be accessed through the internet.
MOVIE TRAILER is a short clip from a film.
DOCUMENTARY is a research-based reporting that deals with a specific topic and format.
